intoronto
Great Britain doesn't compete in the Commonwealth Games; England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland compete separately. I think what the question was referring to Scotland gaining independence from the Great Britain name.
runningrings
I think what the question was referring to Scotland gaining independence from the Great Britain name. I'm aware of that, they've been bringing it up in another thread also. In terms of Glasgow 2014 and the Commonwealth Games as an event, the Scottish referendum is irrelevant. As far as the CGF is concerned, Scotland is independent for sporting purposes.

Rob2012
A shame for Glasgow 2014 that Hoy's announced his retirement today. He'd obviously have been a huge draw. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/apr/15/sir-chris-hoy-retires-cycling?CMP=twt_gu I'm sure if he isn't planning to compete, he'll be snapped up quickly as Games Ambassador. Alexjc
Another long relay...anyone else believe that it should go back down to England and the host nation again? Or prehaps previous hosts. It seems the relay has lost it's sparkle since Melbourne started the full Commonwealth tour.
mattygs
Im going to go with previous hosts , with the extensive host nation (and at a stretch host region) relay on top of that.
Alexjc
That's how it use to be, Buckingham Palace, Heathrow, next host, previous host, host nation, city. All over within three months. And a good quick build up to and a burst of excitment.
mattygs
I think it just doesn't have the impact as it's not as visual as the Olympic torch. I give credit to the CGF for not following the footsteps of these other multi sport Games and having a bastard version of the Olympic torch. They created their own tradition, and I think it's respected now, but as much as recent hosts have tried to give it a slightly modern and eyecatching slant to it, it still doesn't excite like fire. I think there is room for a regional relay. If Australia or NZ hosted for example, it's appropriate to take it round the Pacific. Likewise, if South Africa hosted, a trip around African Com nations would be appropriate. I don't think there is a need for it to visit every city. Whereas the Olympic torch naturally brings people to see it, it seems like the Queens baton (for the most part, when visiting random Com Nations) , is just a marketing event for the Com Games federation of each nation, or an excuse to get a bunch of primary school kids out. baron-pierreIV
Even a dead cactus is sexier than that dumb Queen's Baton. I wonder if it'll stay as a CWG feature when Charles or William becomes king. The King's Baton?? They might as well have Hooter's waitresses as the VIP escorts in that case. Alexjc
I'm just wondering if the Baton relay, CWGs would survive in it's current form outright when the Queen dies - being realistic - within the decade.

Liz will be embalmed just like Lenin and Chavez, and instead of the Queen's Baton, it will be the Queen's Body. That eliminates the embarrassing problem of the King's Baton!! (Of course, better yet if it were the Baron's Baton!! ) Edited April 17, 2013 by baron-pierreIV

Scotguy
The cost of securing seats to watch next year's Commonwealth Games events is set to be revealed as organisers announce their ticketing policy. A million tickets are being made available for Glasgow 2014, which begins in just over 14 months' time. Ticketmaster was chosen as the selling agent earlier this month. At an event in Glasgow, the public will find out when events are taking place, the process for buying tickets and how much they are likely to cost. Glasgow 2014 executives have already vowed to learn lessons from last year's Olympics in London, when organisers experienced difficulties with their ticketing policy. Ticketmaster will be responsible for online and telephone sales along with box office outlets at games venues. It will also be a sponsor of the games as well as the official ticketing services provider.

Alexjc
Hard to believe that whole area was was a grotty idle (cos everyone was on strike) shipyard, it's a pity they never focused a full on sports precinct for here. Amazing Google Maps still show the arena at basement level of construction.

Scotguy
Variations of the 2014 logo for the different elements:
runningrings
Wow - probably one of the best ever reuses of a main Games logo, for different aspects of organisation. Loving Glasgow's look - certainly a best ever as far as the CWG are concerned (I don't think Gold Coast 2018's logo is as versatile). Any ideas as to when the Baton will unveiled?
Ikarus360
^^ I agree. Some people complained about the logo at first for being too corporative but I think they did a very elegant and versatile job with it and it has been becoming a personal favorite of mine in the recent months. Since the Baton Relay is usually kinda long and the games will start in July next year, I think we might see the design very soon.
runningrings
I'm unsure if this has already been covered (just thought I'd quickly share) that it looks like (well, evident) that the rumours of a daylight ceremony for the 2014 Games are all but false - the Opening Ceremony is scheduled for 8pm. Although - being a Scottish summer I imagine like all of Northern Europe it remains light into the evening?
