London 2012 Olympic Media Updates

This is Malaysia's RTM promo for their terrestrial coverage of the 2012 London Summer Olympics Games. RTM chose Kusham's "Ke Akhir Garisam" as its theme song for that. Though it's not yet officially announced, it's very possible that RTM 1 and RTM 2 will share the broadcast coverage like both did for Beijing.

BandSport's little promo countind down the days to the London Olympics thanks to Big Ben with its coverage sponsors.

Edinburgh's Festival Square will be Scotland's only place involved with the Live Events for the London 2012 Olympics.

I think it perhaps bears repeating here for Venezuela from earlier on this thread: It looks as though that Venezolana De Television (VTV) will share the terrestrial TV Olympic coverage.

That Populous 5 magazine is really interesting in its take for the London Olympics. I just saw it after the link on another thread on London here. Could use more insight on the broadcasting side. But overall it's really nice. I'll link it here on this thread.

Ericsson has been with NBC's Olympic coverage for multichannel video contributions and distributions systems since Sydney 2000 and has never looked back with the Peacock. Today announces the extension of that fruitful partnership with more HD.

Thought this interesting-looking CCTV facility was already occupied just before Beijing four years ago. Turns out it wasn't due to a fire, but it will be up and running for London.

Just made a visit to the Hungarian (or Magyar, if you prefer) edition of Wikipedia with a list of the Olympic broadcasters. The Hungarian one mentions that, yes, Magyar Televizio, will broadcast the Olympics. But it doesn't mention that it will be M1 and M2. What really got me interested is of the Carisma TV channels. Tried searching for them online and learn about them, but nothing turned up yet. Moreover, MTV does say it will air 15 hours a daily live produced by a team of 51 in London. I wish I could get the full article to that last point, but I have to register to the Media Info site.

MTV did transmit the Hungarian men's Olympic handball qualifiers.

Looks as though once we get into the 100-day mark, we are bound to get a flurry of Olympic media developments around then worldwide, especially from NBC since it likes to do things around day countdown milestones.

SKY Italia and RAI will come together tomorrow to announce more of what their London Olympic broadcasting plans are. SKY hopes to rebound after a difficult period of losing 50,000 subscribers in the hopes that the Olympics could drive some of them back and new ones to the fold, even with the UEFA Champions League and Serie A enjoying big ratings. SKY plans to bring forth 13 Olympic-specific channels with 12 of them in HD and one in 3D with SkyGo in a total of 1600 live hours. Fiona May, Yuri Chechi, Antonio Rossi, London director John Bruno, among others, as part of a 210-strong staff in London with a studio back in Italy.

RAI will have RAI Dua, the home of sports in all of the main RAI channels, will act as Olympic RAI Dua with 200. A major reason why RAI went for 200 hours is of the need to maintain high broadcasting quality for attention of the roughly 300 Italian Olympians and was deemed sufficient enough. It also announces there will be a new 24-hour sports themed channel in the form of RAI Sports 1, patterned like SkySport24, with a RAI Sport News coming too early next week.

Daveypodmore and RobH both have mentioned this in the 100 Days to Go thread, so I'll bring about it here for those who don't go over there. The BBC is about to release a countdown called the London Olympics--100 Days to Go. Roger Mosley wrote a blog post about it about the details where overseas it will take more of a global feel outside of the UK "from Peru to Papua New Guinea", where the domestic version will include more of the British Olympians. It's hosted by Michael Johnson, and we'll get to hear what Danny Boyle hopes to have cooking for the OC.

Months ago, I showed one of the Televisa Deportes Londres promos with the sportscasting team singing (or lip-synching) Queen's famous "We Are The Champions" all over London and meeting the (lookalike) Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William along the way. That one I uploaded did not have the actual beginning. Maybe it was a rough cut. But here it is in its entirety.

Like with many second-tiered European nations across the continent whose government-run TV and radio networks have a greater anchor as part of the EBU, this post-London breakup of stripping the EBU of its exclusive broadcast rights, that involving the likes of Lithuania, as the IOC demands more money for media rights than they can cough up. Lietuvos Televizija simply got outbid for Rio and Sochi. It not only lost that buyt also European and World Championships.

http://translate.goo...%26prmd%3Dimvns

This is a nice sample of what LTV, with its 15-person team, will produce and cover the 2012 London Olympics in what will very likely be its final Olympics broadcast. If you know anything about Lithuanian sports, basketball is very high on the food chain. The nation is very like the state of Indiana in this regard. You just have to wonder how LTV will cope with Olympic basketball if the Lithuanians don't qualify out of Venezuela as they're expected. We can safely assume Lithuanians will watch the NBA stars. Also, there will be Olympic treamings.

Well compared to Vancouver London's coverage seems watered down a bit.

Are you talking about the online coverage of the lead-up? Obviously you're not talking about the games themselves, certainly not with the impending announcement that everything is going to be streamed LIVE (thanks nyk, you beat me to it). I agree that there is definitely a lack of buzz right now compared to this time 4 years ago, but NBComcast is about to present more coverage of the Olympics than there has ever been before. I don't see how that could be considered watered down.

Freeviewers rejoice: the BBC's Roger Mosey announced this morning that some newly-released HD digital space will help make up the Beeb's Olympic HD broadcasting for the Games under the Freeview platform. Bad news is capacity limitations on it means there won't those full 24 streams for each sport. I had a sense the BBC was not going to neglect the Freeview, but at this time last week or a couple of weeks ago, I suggested the upside was going towards Sky's way because of those Freeview capacity limitations. Cable and satelitte platforms like Freesat are expected to offer the Red Button services with an EPG position for those 24 channels that will include a schedule and recorder, as Mosey later notes in the feedback.

http://www.bbc.co.uk...ed_for_bbc.html

The Olympic rings are there underneath the NBC peacock on TV today.

On the heels of the 100-day mark, FOXTEL down in Australia announces 3200 hours of coverage with 1100 of that live. Unlike Vancouver, the 8 channels will not be named after specific areas in Vancouver (Cypress, Whistler, Creekside). Wonder what kind of previews it will show leading up to the soccer and the Opening Ceremony, an Australian Olympic preview, a history of the Australians at the Games, a doc on the Moscow 1980 Olympics from an Aussie perspective. These are the channels outlined:

LONDON 1--swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming

LONDON 2--track cycling, mountain biking, BMX, road cycling

LONDON 3--gymnastics, trampoline, rHthymic gymnastics, gymnastics gala

LONDON 4--track events

LONDON 5--field events

LONDON 6--equestrian, table tennis, fencing

LONDON 7--rowing, canoeing

LONDON 8--beach volleyball, field hockey, soccer, sailing, weightlifting

Remaining sports--I'm shocked that basketball doesn't have a channel of its own to designate itself into as massively popular as it is worldwide and even with the Boomers and the Opals in the competition--will be placed among those channels depending on the competition schedule. I'm thinking LONDON 4 and 5 in the early going for that sport and maybe indoor volleyball since the track and field competition don't hit until very late into the first week.

Not only is Rove McManus involved as previously mentioned here. He'll report from the Olympic Village as one of the two studios FOXTEL will use. But Eddie McGuire will ALSO be there for FOXTEL even as a Nine host, anchoring the coverage! But this is not the only synergy FOXTEL/Nine got. Andrew Gaze, Kerri Pottharst, Scott McGrory, Debbie Watson, James Tompkins, and James Flemming are also involved. Daley Thompson, Susie O'Neill, and Rachelle Hawkes are back from FOXTEL's Commonwealth Games coverage, as expected. Interestingly, 1980 Aussie Olympic swimming team co-captain Lisa Forrest, 16 at the time, will be on hand and wrote a book about Australia's conundrum on going to Moscow called Boycott. Tiffany Cherry (one of hosts of the other studio) and Matt Shirvington are also returning with some new personalities including Sydney's Triple M FM (2MMM) radio host Gus Worland, Tracey Holmes, 2GB's Ray Hadley, Branden Julian, Fox Sports Australia sportscasters Adam Peacock, Sarah Jones, and Adam Dunstall, Will McCoy, British journalist Tania Bryer, Ben Damon, and Sky Australia News newscaster James Bracey. Now Aussies don't have that excuse of that jumping around the coverage interrupting their enjoyment for sports that is not swimming like Seven did after the demise of C7 Sport after Salt Lake City even with SBS as a junior partner 2004-2008 Thanks to FOXTEL's contribution to the most comprehensive coverage of the Summer olympics ever in Australian TV history.

Yes, they'll be a tablet and smart TV app for that from FOXTEL.

Yes, it's now official today--Olympic streaming on NBC's London coverage is going to be live for ALL events. But that annoying caveats are, you must sign up for a authenticated cable/satelitte/telecommunications service provider (somewhat like with Vancouver) and if you missed it live online on You Tube, you're screwed until at least the NBC primetime coverage. Not right, but the Peacock has to protect its financial investments:

http://bleacherrepor...ream-all-sports

New CTV Olympics 2012 promo premiered yesterday on Canadian airwaves on CTV voiced by Ellen Page, where we get the first serious look at Scots (principally, schoolkids on bikes in Edinburgh) "believing" for native Scot Sir Chris Hoy at the velodrome to Rome, Italy once again and again to Whitby, Ontario with students cheering for Priscilia Lopes-Schliep.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmnBI9YiZ1Q

I'll take the time to mention this for the Canadian contingent among us, but the Canadian Olympic/amatuer sports world lost a very strong ally in the print media when Toronto Star sports reporter Randy Starkman died of pneumonia yesterday. He had a passion for these type of sports and many others when many others in the sports reporting prefer not to cover in sports where the athletes have a love of it regardless how much money they make, when they need it the most.. The tributes are pouring in from Canadian Olympians like Clara Hughes, Adam van Koeverten, Kristina Groves, Silke Laumann, Sherraine Schalm, and Dave Stubbs that are very heartfelt, insightful, and thankful as well as funny. Starkman made things fun and also serious when need to be for thse amatuer athletes, who normally don't have access to publicists or media training on a financial level. Starkman had opportunities to progress to the bigger sports on the sports chain, but he loved and got to know and publicized them on a regular basis that it was worth sticking with them. Now who's cover going to cover them with his kind of endearing qualities for Canadians, especially we're at the 100-day mark to London and beyond? Starkman will definitely be missed with a massive void left behind. I hope the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium will do a special tribute to him during its coverage of the 2012 London Olympics and dedicate the coverage in his memory.

Pele in negotiations with Rede Record for its Olympic coverage as part of its team, particularly in soccer after the network got tired of waiting for Romario. The entire Televisa team will have to take a preliminary course on how to operate a camera before heading off to London. Televisa will only have two cameramen out of that who will take part.

Boy, you are just not a fan of NBC lately, are you? I mean, they're offering live streaming of every single event, and you end your comment with "not right"? Not right is that they didn't do this 4 years ago, but give them at least a little credit and maybe look at the glass as half full rather than half empty. The authentication process is moderately annoying, I'll give you that one. But a few things to correct you on here. First off, the coverage is not on Youtube. It's on nbcolympics.com, Youtube is merely partnering up with them. Also, according to an NBC spokesman (as mentioned in Richard Sandomir's NY Times article yesterday).. “The vast majority of events will be archived immediately.” It's only the big ticket events being shown in primetime that won't be archived immediately. I think we can live with that tradeoff, especially at a venue where competition is going on late into the night in London meaning right up close to primetime here in the US. And you also missed the part where there will be concurrent streams coming from sports like gymnastics and track & field where multiple events are occurring simultaneously. I think that helps cancel out some of the "you're screwed" mentality.

Either way, this is extremely good news. Yes, again, it should have happened already, but I'm willing to forgive and forget and be ready to rant at those who still complain over having live streaming of EVERY event. This is the best of both worlds.. it's exactly the direction I was hoping NBC would go. Kudos to them for finally learning some new tricks after resisting change all these years.

I must admit that I wrote that when I was more pressed for time yesterday a little bit in haste and thus wasn't careful. Also, I admit that I don't fully like the direction NBC is going with that. To be sure, it is MUCH BETTER than it was in Beijing and Vancouver. When there was the official partnership with You Tube, I assumed it was going to serve as a free option for Americans watching online or at least a transfer stop with NBCOlympics.com. So I did misread that one. The authentication is arbitrary, and I feel, has no place in outlets like this, but I look at it as a way to keep the telecommunication and satelitte companies involved satisfied with their stake in this. But as someone who has less fuller and thus limited access to computers than those have personal ones as of now (though that can change hopefully soon), that can be a problem--so a major point in this was speaking more for them on their behalf, who are an increasingly shrinking minority. Actually, I did assume the premiere Olympic events like the men's and women's 100m finals, the men's gold medal basketball game, the women's all-around and team gymnastics, and maybe even both ceremonies will undergo an embargo in the archiving until close to US primetime. Yes, I did the miss the part regarding concurrent events like different gymnastics teams competeing simultaneously at the same competition and heats and semis at the track with the field events going through its sessions. Please forgive me, but again as you say it is much better than previously in past Olympics and, you're right, having a willingness to "learn some new tricks" from NBC will go a long way.

Finally at the 100-day mark, we got the first London 2012 "Imagine" promo from RDS for the French-Canadian set with popular Quebec actor Pierre Lebeau's voiceover. What took it so long since the official launch during Super Sunday back in February? I'm thinking it wants to wait for the 100 day countdown for it. It's Indian boxer Mary Kom again, and it's essentially Lebeau speaking the French translation of what his Newfoundland actor counterpart Gordon Pinsent speaks for the TSN English version using the same scenes. Notice for RDS, it does not use the French version of the word London ("Londres"); it still says London on the logo. Bit strange, but Canadians across the nation are pretty much accustomed to this knowing the English saying of it is more widely used. Can't recall seeing any Vancouver Imagine promos from two years ago.

And with that, both the CTVOlympics.ca's and the RDSOlympiques.ca's website have gotten a little changeup in the 100-day mark as you'll notice when you visit them. Also announced yesterday was that ELTA TV in Taiwan (or Chinese Taipei in the international sports circles) will offer the 2012 London Olympics coverage through its 11 Olympics-specific channels and likely associate with Taiwan Public Television Service, Formosa Television, Taiwan Television, Chinese Television System, and China Television for the free-to-air coverage with negotiations still ongoing. Taiwan's National Communications Commission approved this move of having ELTA TV's sports network to operate the 11 channels yesterday on Chungwah Telecom's MOD, the exclusive home of ELTA. Too bad Taiwan didn't qualify for basketball out of Asia; had they got Jeremy Lin on it, ratings would be sky-high with the "Linsanity".

A big difference between FOXTEL's and Nine's 2012 Olympic coverage deals with how FOXTEL, with its 8 channels, will not have to bounce around in theirs and keep things "long form" (contracted to do so) unlike the Nine Network on FTA; the latter will act like a traditional terrestrial Olympic TV broadcaster with highlights packages and short packages with an emphasis on Australian Olympians and big-name international stars in big tent events--see NBC, CTV, and just about any other terrestrial Olympic TV rights carrier around the world. Nine just got permission from the Australian government to cover some of it on 3D on GEM. But both aim for monster ratings and will share stars.

Very interesting news out of South Africa's Olympic TV coverage. All of South Africa's 11 official languages--English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, Sotho, Tswana, Siswati, Venda, North Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga--will be used on SABC's three TV channels. I do think, however, English will be used for the majority of the coverage. We're still awaiting if Afrikaans will used for Supersport, but Portuguese, the seemingly unofficial 12th South African language, gets used on SuperSport Maximo. SABC2 will have the live coverage with SABC's Radio 2000 doing the radio honors starting July 27. Seelect events will likely be offered in select languages. In other words, it would be a little like what South Africa's Commonwealth cousins in Canada have been doing for two years with theirs in embracing the multiculturalism with APTN, OMNI, and ATN. SABC2 will show Countdown to London 2012 with a focus Team South Africa every Sunday at 13:30 South Africa time (or 1:30pm) and the youth-centric afternoon slot Hectic Nine 9 at weekdays at 16:00 (or 4pm) weekdays. How will SABC will help out with the rest of sub-Saharan Africa has yet to be revealed in terms of Olympic coverage.

NBC's "authentication" sucks, at least this time they did a deal with DirecTV, thankfully. I agree with Durban it's good but it's not enough, although I guess NBC has to recoup some of the billions they idiotically massively overpaid for the contract.

Not so sure about the "authentication" but I think the NBC online offering is a pretty fair compromise - as is holding back delayed options until they air it. It just means NBC is giving people the chance to watch everything live, something they should have been doing for years. Just surprised really they haven't put the live online streaming behind a pay wall, though perhaps after Triplecast they believe they can make more money from advertising and deals with cable companies.

Kinda sensed this was going to happen after the success with Canadian movie multiplexes during Vancouver 2010. Other UK movie chains are looking admiting people to watch the London Olympics for free.

It would make a lot of sense for Belgium's VRT to have a third channel coming this year and utitlize its Sporza banner into something more concrete and put a lot of the Flemish Belgian TV sports rights it has to greater use like the Olympics. This even in the face of public budget cuts. Many other European nations' public-owned TV networks have sports channels these days.

French basketball legends Richard Dacoury and Yannick Souvre will cover the Olympic basketball action in London for France Televisions for the men's and women's games, respectively, with a focus on Les Bleus. Both have already covered it for France Televisions, especially in Dacoury's case being a longtime announcer there after his playing days.

SVT Sport's Andre Pops, the head studio anchor for SVT's London coverage, announces live from typically rainy London on Godmorron Sverige at the 100-day mark that in the Swedish public broadcaster's final Olympic TV broadcast, SVT will broadcast over 600 hours on TV between its three of its regular TV channels--SVT1, SVT2, and SVT24--with over 1100 hours online through SVT Play.

Since London serves as SVT's final Olympics, a team of its SVT sports journalists like Pops, Jacob Hard, Marie Lehmann, Yvette Hermundstad, SVT sports director Per Yng, and Jonas Karlsson all debate over the greatest Olympic performances in SVT's entire history of covering the Summer Olympics and includes the top Swedish performances in OS-Ogonblick or OS-Klassikern.

NBC will use two studios and associated control rooms at the London IBC. Not a surprise with its massive coverage planned. With 1500 people working with 65,000 square feet of space. The sets themselves will have a British look and feel. Hope it won't be cartoonish and use the obvious British images too much. Maybe make it resemble like a very upscale English home. We'll critique how it all looks when the studios are unvieled. It's going to take a lot of stuff with them to London, even the Beijing highlights.

NBC's "authentication" sucks, at least this time they did a deal with DirecTV, thankfully. I agree with Durban it's good but it's not enough, although I guess NBC has to recoup some of the billions they idiotically massively overpaid for the contract.

What is enough then? They went from something like 2,200 hours of live streaming up to supposedly 3,500. I have no major issue with the whole authentication process (although of course I would if my cable system wasn't included), but at least this isn't what CBS/Turner did for March Madness where they had a much more complicated authentication process, not to mention the fact that some parts of it you had to pay for. NBC is offering up every single event online FOR FREE and it's not enough? Again, if you're left out, that's one thing, but if you have DirecTV, I can't see how the authentication part of things is an issue for you.

They'll never go the pay route again, in large part due to the Triplecast, but also because the money online these days comes from advertising. That's part of why the Comcast folks have so much faith in the Olympics because they think new media could be what makes them a lot of money going forward. Yes, they still have protection in place for primetime by not immediately archiving the big ticket events. But I think their theory of showing events live to create buzz for primetime is exactly the way to go. What it does for ratings remains to be seen, but this is the direction I was hoping NBC would go in. So long as the authentication process is as simple as I'm led to believe, I have very little to complain about.

Well last time DirecTV wasn't part of their authentication system. The thing is it shouldn't be an issue anyway, they can tell what my IP address is and if someone is in the US or not, if you can get NBC over the air (excluding Canadian and Mexican side border areas) why shouldn't you just be able to click and view?

Please tell me that NBC will keep the archives up for a few months like they did in 2008. There is only 24 hours in a day (even during the Olympic Games) and I just will not be able to cram everything in over the games-time period.

How many proxy servers or other work-arounds could there be in place to beat that one? The other issue is when you're not on your computer and rather on your phone or another mobile device. That's why authentication is the wave of the future, for better or worse.. so that it allows you to use any device, not just your computer. And especially for the Olympics, it's not just about protecting NBC, it's about all these various rights holders from each other. So there needs to be some sort of protection in place, especially where mobile devices are involved.

So many excuses, it's a dying model digitally border's are disappearing, in some place's governments are actively working to erase borders. Alas I have no faith in the bonehead's running the media company's of the world, so I agree and fully expect more "authentication" systems in the future, I can predict alongside that 100's maybe even thousand's of illicit free stream's will pop up more than they can shutdown definitely.

People don't want logging in, password's, account number's, they want easy click and watch, when they want where they want and whatever they want, eventually we'll get it, but first we'll have to go through this BS with useless "authentication" signing in over and over again for stuff that should be broadcast OTA. In 20 years, maybe even 10 years we will look back and laugh at how stupid it all was.

Do people also want NBC to wipe their ass for them as well? That's nice that people want that, but people don't always get what they want. You say that digital borders are disappearing. You know how that's happening?.. via authentication. The idea is that if a media company has content, you should be able to access it anywhere, but it from a television or the internet or a mobile phone/tablet. But since those 3 are all on different systems, authentication is how you allow access from different locations. That's not something that's going to go away anytime soon.

What we've all learned is that what people want tends not to matter. How many people have complained about NBC's tape delays, but in spite of that, NBC justifies it because it makes them more money. It's just like the airline industries who nickel and dime you for things like charging you for baggage or making you pay for in-flight entertainment. Fliers hate these things, but the airlines could them a success because it makes them money.

Specific to NBC and the Olympics, they make more than 200 hours of coverage available free over the air. They have no obligation to make all 3,500 hours of Internet streaming completely free and accessible. From what I gather of the sign in process, it's probably a 1-time deal, not something you have to do over and over again. Don't like passwords and account numbers?.. well then I guess you won't be watching the Olympics online. Get used to it though. Moderately annoying, yes. Still doesn't mean NBC (or any other company in a similar position) is going to make it as simple as you want because you want it to be that simple.

Somewhat related, I saw this on CNBC earlier, an article written by Darren Rovell. Sums up my thoughts on streaming and tape delaying pretty well, and it provides a much better explanation of NBC's Olympics programming strategy than the old tired "it makes them more money"...

Roger Mosey (Head of Olympics at the BBC) has confirmed BBC1 will show the opening Team GB football games on Wednesday and Thursday before the Opening Ceremony. Not sure what I make of that - I'd have rather they'd have been on BBC2/3 and had a lower profile myself, with the focus being thrown on the Opening Ceremony as the event that kicks it off.

P.S. Is it likely the graphics used for the football draw (a mixture of pink, white and purple) is a taster of the main broadcast graphics for the games?

Well, considering just how incredibly huge soccer (or football) is to the Brits, I don't see any problem why BBC1 would not show Team GB soccer games prior to the Opening Ceremony. A rare thing indeed to see a Team GB in soccer in any big competition, not just rare to see an Olympics held in Great Britain, instead of seeing players representing the Home Nations. Surely while it has issues from among the four, this will be put differences and issues aside as the London Olympics attempt to unite England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland (to say nothing of the Channel Islands) in fervent euphoria. People will watch on TV.

On my last post I made mention that Canal 13 plans to air over a 100 hours of Olympic coverage that will feature former gymnast Karen Bittner calling the action from London for the sport. Now I got for you is the mini advertiser Olympic press kit from the other Chilean TV Olympic broadcaster TVN, "the channel of Chile". It can be confirmed that Pedro Carcuro and Fernando Solabarrieta will anchor the live coverage and competition with a focus on the Chilean athletes. Promotion from TVN has already just started with, coming on June 3, 8 weekly episodes of Camino a Londres (Road To London) on Sundays at 11:45. Both ceremonies will aired live to Chile. Apparently, unlike a lot of Olympic broadcasters worldwide, the TVN Chile Olympic live coverage is not going to be as wall to wall in terms of hours, if I read this correctly, even on the more-extended weekends. Just chopped. And there will be a twice-daily review show with the second installment lasting an hour long.

Since Atlanta 1996, TyC Sports has been the most comprehensive Olympic channel for Argentina. This Olympic year will be no different with TyC Sports planning to air 24 hours of Olympic broadcasting daily, much of it live through TyC Sports and TyC Sports HD. There are presently four TV promos starring Argentinian Olympians from hammer thrower Jennifer Dahlgren, shot putter German Lauro, Pan Am taekwondo gold medalist Sebastien Chrismanich, and, I think, Veronica Tajes, also a taekwondo artist, all doing their things and encouraging viewers to watch them on TyC Sports when the Olympics hit. Each video has Coldplay's "Paradise" as the soundtrack.

Here's hoping that BBC Radio 5 Live's Colin Murray can track down all of Britain's 114 living gold medalists in time before the Opening Ceremony on July 27 for his radio documentary. Obviously, some are far easier to find than others, especially with the more recent Olympic champs. A challenge to be sure, but Murray definitely chooses to happily accept. Sometimes I feel this is going to be like VH1's Bands Reunited in some ways. Maybe LOCOG could invite all of them for the OC to make it easier for Colin.

Really nice article from the New York Times about NBC's promise to stream everything live online for the hardcore Olympic fans. Wherever there's cameras at a venue, NBC will be there for it online live and (most) events will get "archived immediately". Big attention events for Americans will be restricted for archiving until NBC prime time like Michael Phelps swimming events or women's gymnastics all-around.

This is how Hong Kong's i-CABLE, the official Olympic broadcaster for HK, will orchestrate its London Olympic coverage: i-CABLE Sports will produce at least 10 hours of Olympic programming in HD on various platforms, covering as many events as possible, both high and low-interest sports. It will have at least 4 Olympic channels including two 24-hour Main Live Olympic ones in HD with the other two with a standard definition simulcast. These two channels will have live competition from London from afternoon to midnight Hong Kong time during actual competition hours with the remaining hours devoted to taped delayed events and highlights/news. A special live channel will be devoted to 36 men's and women's soccer matches. There will also be a planned extra live channel for events that can't be on the two main ones (very likely this will happen with so many events going on at the same time or overlapping). I-CABLE TV's Channel 1 will be involved in broadcasting Olympic coverage with details coming soon. I-CABLE also plans to have designated webpages tio the Olympics on its website for live and on-demand streaming and clips of its programming given how popular the Internet is in Hong Kong and through mobile apps. There's even significant interest from many in 3D Olympic programming with the immense success i-CABLE has with the live Barclays English Premier League games and are in talks with the IOC on covering both ceremonies, swimming, gymnastics, track and field under this format.

As far as the proposed FTA Fantastic Television is concerned, the application has been in existence for over two years, and with the short time frame between now and the start of the Olympic Games, Mr. William Kwan says it is increasingly unlikely Fantastic Television will have its TV license and start broadcasting in time of the Opening Ceremony, especially with the time it takes for the application process to go through the Hong Kong's current government administration. It might be another one that will after that for it to exist. Kwan adds neither ATV nor TVB expressed interest in getting a free-to-air package nailed down
