Guardian
Well, it is official. North America will NOT host Expo 2017. Just as I thought, Harper and the Conservative government thought that having Edmonton bid for Expo 2017 is "a waste of money", given that they spent CDN$1 BILLION on a 72-hour failed side show called the G8 and G20. Again, Edmonton has been shafted, in that, when it comes to Alberta, people mention Calgary, not the capital city. Beside, Ed Stelmach is not a popular premier in the province, in which he is the second-least popular premier in Canada. So, Expo 2017/Expo 2018 is certainly going to be held in Europe (again), right after Expo 2015 in Milan, Italy. It is just the matter of where now. The Americas has not hosted an Expo since Vancouver 1986. Question: should the Americas even care about hosting one?

Question: should the Americas even care about hosting one? an edmonton bid would have been a waste of money. at least with montreal, it might have encouraged tourism among people who had an existing vague notion of paying the city a visit at some point anyway. maybe not even then, but it seems like an event that a vodka company would pay top dollar to sponsor. come to think of it, i think it would play well in vegas. the economy there may even have started to pick up by 2017. SkiFreak
Here's the story about Edmonton's failed bid attempt on CBC: CBC: Edmonton's Expo 2017 bid a no-go It would've been interesting, but, I could see a complete drop in attendance during Sept and Oct when winter is pretty much in full swing up there. I could see Toronto or some of the surrounding cities in that area take a crack at it though.

Rafa
Cape Town Expo 2020 Through the office of the Executive Director, Economic, Social development and Tourism Mr Mansoor Mohamed the City of Cape Town received a bid proposal to host the equivalent of Shanghai Expo 2010 in Cape Town in the year 2020. In response to the request Mr Mansoor Mohamed· Executive Director, Economic, Social Development and Tourism, expressed an interest to conduct a high level, desktop study addressing the feasibility / viability of bidding to host the 2020 World Expo. Expo SA 2020 is currently preparing a proposal for City to consider. The "rights" to host a World Expo reside with the Bureau International des Expositions ("BIE"), with its headquarters located in Paris, France. Members of the BIE are countries (157 current members - List available on request), with the relevant government department that deals with foreign affairs typically being the representative at the BIE (SA Government is represented by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation "DIRCO"). Bidding on a World Expo has to be a Recognised and Guaranteed National Project with a Host City/Region being the Event Partner. If successful, it is envisaged that 20 million visitors could visit Cape Town Expo 2020 over a period of six months. The closing date for bidding is in the last quarter of 2011. Golan Trevize
Expo 98 in Lisbon was a great success, it changed a significant part of Lisbon from an industrial wasteland to a new centrality for the city. The recent and very successful NATO summit was held there.
baron-pierreIV
It all depends on how it's marketed. And if Cape Town gets it, then that would be 5th Olympics-World Expo combo in the same year and country happening. Paris 1900, St. Louis 1904, LA and New Orleans 1984 (N.O. a flop), Barcelona and Sevilla 1992, then if it happens Durban & Cape Town 2020. I enjoyed Sevilla 1992 very much. Great fair!! Rafa
Highly unlikely for government to pursue both, even more unlikely for government to endorse Cape Town
gotosy
Russia to propose Yekaterinburg as Expo 2020 venue Russia will propose the Urals city of Yekaterinburg as a candidate to host the World Expo 2020 international exhibition, presidential Aide Arkady Dvorkovich told reporters on Tuesday. Expo 2020 will showcase the world's latest scientific, technological and economic achievements and inventions. The Russian government has considered all bids and decided that Yekaterinburg and the city of Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga were the best candidates. "Following consultations, the president decided to support the application of Yekaterinburg," Dvorkovich said. "The president and the government will give all the necessary instructions to prepare the bid file for Yekaterinburg. We will strive for victory." http://en.rian.ru/business/20110802/165518448.html
baron-pierreIV
Yekaterinburg -- bad juju for this town. Czar Nicholas and his family were murdered here at the Ipatiev house and then their bodies disposed of in the woods around the city. U-2 pilot Gary Powers was shot down outside YKB in 1960. Guardian
Well, it was official a couple of weeks ago. Here are your candidate cities that are vying for Expo 2020: - Sao Paulo, Brazil; - Yekaterinburg, Russia; - Ayutthaya, Thailand; - Izmir, Turkey; and, - Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Decision time will be at the annual BIE General Assembly meeting in 2013 -> Link : ExpoMuseum's Expo 2020 page.
intoronto
Edmonton is bidding for 2017. I wonder what their theme will be? James Cameron vs. The Oil Sands? Calgary was going to bid for 2017 as well, but they bailed out. Maybe we will see the same kind of transformation in Edmonton as we saw in Vancouver? That would be nice because as is Edmonton is a horribly ugly city. How Can Canada afford the expo when it can't even build one pavilion for the 2012 expo? DannyelBrazil
Go Sao Paulo! I'm totally pro-Sao Paulo hosting the World Expo. It fits very well the city atmosphere, still, compared to the other bidders, Sao Paulo have nothing to show as a strong appeal, unfortunatelly. Link: ExpoMuseum's Expo 2017 Page. Link: Liege 2017 Website. Link: Astana 2017 Website. Astana's bid is the first one ever for this country. If it wins, it will be the country's first World's Fair. As for Belgian bid, if it wins, then it will be the country's ELEVENTH World's Fair and Liège's FOURTH World's Fair in their histories. -> World's Fair Wikipedia Entry (List of Expositions section)
