taichi
Yes, I agree with you. I don't think they should go to Rome. Maybe they will use some of the existing venues tha was from 1960.
Guardian
Is it just me or Rome is asking CHINA to cough up money for their 2020 Olympic Games bid? I say so because the BBC has reported that Italy may have to ask China to buy bonds necessary for the Italian state to be solvent.

Rob2012
All nations sell bonds and debt to raise capital. That doesn't mean China is paying for Rome 2020. Doesn't China own billions in US debt? Would they have been paying for Chicago 2016 had the US bid won?

It is supposed to welcome any points, fair or not, against the Roman bid.

baron-pierreIV
The Italian gov't has postponed the fate of Rome's bid and will decide by the original Feb 15 date (when the first questionnaires must be received in Lausanne). http://www.sportsfea...t-rome-2020-bid LAURA WALDEN / Sports Features Communications TAMPA: Italian Premier Mario Monti has spoken out to Repubblica TV and confirmed that the government will maintain their original deadline of February 15th to decide on the backing for the Rome 2020 Olympic bid. Monti said, "The government will make a decision within the established timeline, February 15th, and since the topic in question is of extreme importance I don't think it is wise to anticipate a positive or negative decision prior to that time." IOC vice president and head of the Rome 2020 bid, Mario Pescante, spoke of earlier today in an interview with Radio Vaticana and called out for the government to make a decision. The bid committee is under stress to submit the applicant file to the International Olympic Committee on the 15th of February and needs to know as soon as possible of the government’s intentions. Pescante said, “This delay could give the IOC members the impression that there is not overall consensus and, if the decision should not be for Rome, that this government and future governments might not be totally behind the city for the Games. “Last minute decisions work fine for buying airline tickets, but certainly not in this case. Other possible candidatures such as Spain and Azerbaijan have already decided long ago, we are on the last lap of the stopwatch.” So, apparently, there's a lot of backstage maneuvering and debating going on. I can only imagine they're crunching the numbers once more and there's a very heated, impassioned discussion on both sides.
tikus_kecil
So, question is, if Rome drop from the race, will Madrid do the same ? And how about Tokyo, since, actually Japan also still in crisis, will the 2020 race only for Doha and Baku ? Considering Turkey also in euro zone... The Madrid and Tokyo bid committees have resources of their own to see through the bids. Now, it's another matter when those respective gov'ts will be asked to make t he full 2020 financial commitments. But if they see that Rome has pulled out, I think they will back Madrid and Tokyo's bids even more.

munichfan
So, question is, if Rome drop from the race, will Madrid do the same? No, why should they drop out? They've got the governmental support, they've got many venues yet completed and they've got a huge popularity with about 85% of the Spaniards supporting Madrid's bid. baron-pierreIV
The IOC should learn from this. If they don't want to get stuck with all those Arab sheikdoms, they should relax that stupid "government-guaranteed" rule of theirs. As a matter of fact, THEY should pay for the Games. baron-pierreIV
Just an interesting bit of trivia here Breads and circuses was actually invented in ancient Rome. Which meant keeping people happy was through providing food and entertainment. When they had a depraved ruler like Commodus and the Roman masses were barely educated. Thank God, they have an economist now like Monti at the helm, plus they have for the most part, a more educated populace, who wouldn't be fooled by "bread and circuses." Altho I am sure Cirque du Soleil does very well in Italy.

Exept that the IOC is not rich enough to pay for the Games... Overall Summer Games budgets (Operations & Capital Investments) are a minimum of USD 9 billion ...... International & Local sponsorships, Ticketing & TV broadcasting will be never enough to cover the Games' costs !!!!
