Durban Sandshark
Sky Sport New Zealand had aired a couple of previews regarding the Commonwealth Games. One dealing with the the city of Delhi and of the Commonwealth venues and another involving New Zealand's Commonwealth athletes with profiles of Sky Sport's Commonwealth broadcast team and coverage. Perhaps there was another. All the events from the ceremonies to the events (all the heats, prelims, and up the finals) were shown live and in full on both Standard and HD. All this was done to ensure a Kiwi perspective on the events, unlike in the Winter Olympics for example where the footage and commentaries were imprted from the likes of the CBC and the BBC. Prime devoted 12 hours each day to the Commonwealth Games, which was less than what Aussies enjoyed across the Tazman on Ten/ONE HD, with every New Zealand athlete and medal event aired live whenever possible. Together, both PRIME AND SKY Sport NZ aired 1400 hours with regular highlights and updates on Sky Sport 1 and 2. Coverage kicked off at October 3 at 4:30 NZ time. Here's the Sky Sport/PRIME 2010 Commonwealth Games ad sales brochure. Mai TV from Fiji just showed daily one hour highlights of the 2010 Commonwealth Games starting at noon on October 3 with the Opening Ceremonies highlights and then again at 7:30pm (subsequent primetime Commonwealth daily highlights shows aired at 7pm Fiji time, except for October 8-9 also at 7:30pm and October 11 on 7:10pm). No surprise those will have some daily focus on the Fijian athletes in the midst of the major events and news going on there. Schedule is still up since it all is in October. I tried to find some coverage news from Pakistan TV, but it's a little like India's Doordarshan. Very little. But there is some talk about PTV creating an all-sports digital channel, which could be good to replay all of the PTV's coverage. From Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union:Commonwealth Games opening nets 29m Indian viewers Tuesday 05 Oct 2010 India’s national broadcaster, Doordarshan (DDI), attracted a record viewership of 29 million for the opening show of the Delhi Commonwealth Games last night, The Times of India reports. With virtually no other news or event competing for attention, the colourful show with its much discussed helium balloon, lasers and thousands of school children going through their paces with aplomb held living rooms across the country riveted. According to viewership rating generated by overnight audience measurement agency, aMap, 29 million people across the country tuned in to watch the show. This beats Indian viewership for both the Beijing Olympics and the FIFA World Cup 2010. If the ill-starred Games needed a break, the opening ceremony was the perfect launching pad. In comparison, 17 million people in India watched the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony in 2008. and here's this days later... UPDATE: DD actually had the 2010 Commonwealth Games aired on five channels: DD National, DD Sports, DD News, DD Urdu, and DD Bharti with some regional channels helping out. More to come soon. Considering Fiji have been suspended from the Commonwealth they didn't exactly have any Fijian athletes to focus on. And indeed their presence was missed from the Rugby Sevens at least. 4gamesandcounting
BBC coverage seemed pretty good on the whole. At least plenty of it on the TV. But a real shame almost nobody seemed to be actually in Delhi. I think this is because of the huge costs for the World Cup coverage this year. First time they haven't been on site since 1998. Durban Sandshark
Namibian Broadcasting Corporation's Commonwealth TV programming was similar to what SABC did in theirs: devote a daily block of several hours in the morning and afternoon of live programming (8-13:00). Then air an hour or two in primetime for the daily highlights (15:30-17:30) and return for the rest late at night (22-0:00). Outside of both ceremonies shown live, the schedule itself from NBC (no, not that NBC), like SABC's, isn't all detailed of what it was showing from Delhi. Whatever it was, it can be assumed the emphasis will lay toward the Namibian and South African athletes. On the other hand, it gets, like South Africans and the rest of Africa much more comprehensive Commonwealth Games from the Supersport channels.
