Late in coming I know--been very, very busy these days and I still haven't finished the others thread. But we just gotta have a Commonwealth version of this, can we? This is where the Commonwealth Games coverage in 2010 in Delhi, India appears, since it gets a very nice following here. I'll start off with Canada. No, that CTV globemedia/Rogers Media Olympic behemoth isn't involved in India at all; too many Canadians are focused on hockey, MLS, NCAA and CFL right now. So the Commonwealth Games have a smaller share up there. Got the CBC/Bold TV schedule taken from the Canadian Sports Fans Blog (all times US/Canada EST):

2010 Commonwealth Games on CBC

CBC has announced their 2010 Commonwealth Games schedule. Coverage this year is better than ever for those who get Bold because Bold will provide 5+ hours of live coverage daily. CBC is basically treating this event like the Olympics (except there is no live coverage on the main net). The Games start in Delhi on Saturday October 3. I haven’t heard any information on CBC commentators yet, but if I do I’ll post those details too. Now here is CBC and Bold’s LIVE 2010 Commonwealth Games broadcast schedule

CBC will also air a daily highlights show from 3-4pm and midnight-1am local every week day of competition. There will also be a highlights show on Saturday October 9 from 1-3pm ET, Sunday October 10 from 2-4pm local and Saturday October 16 from 2-3:30pm ET on CBC.

Bold will re-air their live coverage in the afternoon and late night every day of competition. Afternoon coverage will generally run from noon or 1pm ET until 6pm ET, while late night coverage will usually start from 10pm ET.

Well, TVNZ sold its New Zealand broadcast rights to SKY TV, so these will be there first Commonwealth Games, and no doubt they will be wanting to test the waters for their Summer Olympic debut in London . The coverage will be the best NZ has ever seen, featuring 5 24hr Commonwealth Games channels, in addition to this, they will have a mosaic channel which will feature 5 screens in 1, showing what's happening on all the other channels.

Prime TV will be the free to air broadcast partner featuring 12hrs of coverage a day.

I assume Sky Sports in NZ is part of the Murdoch empire, so will it share a lot of it's coverage with Foxtel in Australia, who are offering six channels. Ten is the FTA broadcaster, with ONE simulcasting in HD and showing additional coverage when Ten shows the news from 5-6pm.

And the BBC as ever is the broadcaster in the UK. Coverage will be anchored in London, though morning heats in swimming and athletics will only be on the red button. Live coverage begins around 8/9am, with highlights from the heats and during the first week, the Track cycling finals. Live coverage continues until Commonwealth Games Report at 5pm, with daily highlights at 7pm. However, a 48-hour strike is planned by BBC staff on 5th/6th October which could hit coverage.

The BBC's coverage looks to be relatively poor this year on network TV at least. Yes, Sky viewers will get the 5-6 streams (Freeview viewers only get an extra one, and no replay at night), but on BBC1/2 themselves there is as little as 7 hours of live coverage a day, with no early morning live coverage of the swimming and athletics heats. They're not even showing the marathon live on network television.

Although this obviously compares favourably with Canada, compared to PRIME and Ten down under it falls short of their 12-16 hours of network TV coverage a day, and indeed compared to previous games is a notable downsizing of coverage.

Are Australia, New Zealand and Canada anchoring from their respective countries like the BBC, or are any braving it out in Delhi?

Must say the BBC coverage seems to lost a lot by being in a studio in London rather than in the city itself. Also like Beijing Huw Edwards and co. ruining the ceremony by just talking through it - they need a serious rethink for London.

One, Network Ten Australia's digital sports TV channel that replaced TEN HD, aired some pre-Commonwealth Games programming with The Making Of... series that featured Leisel Jones, Steve Hooker, Sharelle McMahon, Matthew Mitcham, and Deborah Acason as they complete their training for Delhi.

As for Channel Ten, its coverage started with the Opening Ceremony live at midnight up to 4am Australian Eastern Standard Time (One simulcasted it), having cleared its schedule from Sunday with continuous coverage from 1pm to 4am on both Ten and One. Due to Australian federal anti-siphoning broadcasting regulations (another annoying thing regarding Australia's recent coverage of major sports events on TV), neither can be seen airing different sports at the same time or regulating them to its own second channel. Hosts are Stephen Quartermain (1-5:30pm), Bill Woods (5:30-11:30pm), and Corey Wingard (11:30pm-4pm). Announcers for the TEN's/One's coverage reporting from Delhi include F. Rob de Castella, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, David Culbert, and Tim Lane (track or athletics), Anthony Hudson, Mark Howard, Tim Pullar, and Nicole Livingstone (swimming/aquatics), Phil Liggett and Michael Turtur (cycling), Liz Evans and Luke Darcy (netball), and Daniel Ryan and Stephanie Moorhouse (gymnastics).

Kath Robinson and Brad McEwen host Good Morning Delhi, a morning show acting as a daily highlights of the Commonwealth Games' previous day as well as previews on the upcoming day. For a show that is full of puff pieces, expect lots of lightheartedness with crosses to athletes' families and friends. Regular guests include Hayley Lewis, Libby Trickett, Nicole Hudson, Damian Brown, and Brett Livermore.

A series of TV promos from Ten and One aire leading up to the Games in Delhi with After the Fall's "Desire" used as the official song for the two channels' coverage. The first one is actually a montage of featuring Aussie Commonwealth athletes

. The second is the general overview with Indians, a Gandhi quote at the beginning interspersed with Aussie Commonwealth athletes in Melbourne excelling (as usual in them) with Aussiecasting like Jana Rawlinson (nee Pittman) and John Steffenson (

). It ran during the AFL Grand Final on Ten.

FOXTEL's coverage overview will come next time.

Yes, we Americans can get the Commonwealth Games too. Last time Fox College Sports aired select sports along with both ceremonies. This time, Video Sound Inc. is doing this. Apparently, it's online streaming. I'll find out more.

With all of the problems that India has in hosting the Commonwealth Games with its "crumbling" and dysfunctional facilities, transport, and athletes villages, I'd be very curious to read about what the networks that cover the Games from the CBC to Prime/Sky Sport on the pressing issues with them, even wondering why were this year's games held there in the first place.

St. Lucia has the 2010 Commonwealth Games covered there through LIME Digital TV. I assumed that Sportsmax, the sports cable channel transmitted through the Caribbean, particularly the English-speaking islands, was going to air them. But it is not the case. With an exclusive partnership with the Caribbean Media Corporation, LIME Digital will devote to Delhi 2010 on LIME Digital channel 88 for St. Lucians will get to see high jumper Laverne Spencer in action later on. Bad news is, St. Lucians will NOT get wall-to-wall coverage of the Commonwealth Games. Instead, LIME Digital Channel 88's Commonwealth coverage is only going to be, outside of both ceremonies like the Opening that aired at 1:30pm St. Lucia time, daily highlights from 10am-5pm with one-hour highlight package shows afterwards from Delhi. No live action.

Starting from October 3 to October 17, ASTRO holds the coverage for many Malaysians that comes at no additional charge for ASTRO's sports subscribers. Six additional standard channels (channels 821-826, aka Commonwealth Games 1-6) and one in HD (830) make up the Commonwealth-specific channels for ASTRO. In addition, ASTRO subscribers will get to follow the 200-strong Malaysian Commonwealth athletes' triumphs and challenges on ASTRO Arena (Channel 801). Here's some interesting news about ASTRO Arena's participation: it was selected as the host broadcaster of the badminton competition that will supply the world feed of the sport in only its sixth month of operation. Delhi is the first time a Malaysian production crew was handling the Commonwealth Games broadcasting duties since hosting the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. This was definitely more of a reward for its brilliant coverage of the Thomas and Uber Cups in Kuala Lumpur. 400 hours of live coverage in all those seven channels, compared to just 3 channels from Melbourne 2006.

Not the traditional intro music when CBC held the Olympic TV rights up there, so no "bup bup ba buhn bup ba ba bum bup bup ba bum". Theme music's all too brief here. There are factual errors here. India's capital is New Delhi. Scott Russell was reporting from Chandni Chowk, which lies in the state of Delhi. And the CBC's outro to the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony with Russell and Brenda Irving.

Actually, if my memory serves me right, we never had any sporting event, be it the Olympics, Asian Games, CWG on a Chinese-language channel. I think the YOG was an exception though, although it was still broadcasted in English.

The BBC tackling it head on - concentrating on the sport, but such issues get reported on and then put in context.

And thank god SISLive (formerly BBC Resources) are responsible for the TV feeds - it's the one thing Delhi is having no problems with.

What's South Africa doing with the Commonwealth Games' coverage? SABC Sport is airing the games starting with Opening Ceremony on SABC 2 live on October 3 at 15:00-18:30 live and then repeating on 22:00. Daily coverage on SABC 2 comes in the afternoon from 12:50-17:30 (Tuesday, October 12 it ends at 18), surely with a focus on the South African athletes, with a daily 2-hour primetime highlight show on 22:00, except on Saturday,October 9 which is on 22:30. On weekends, coverage is extended from 12-18:00. Closing Ceremony airs from 12:50-18:00 with a re-airing at 2:00. Surely, SABC is involved with producing and getting coverage and footage to other African Commonwealth nations like it does with the Olympics. As you would expect for South Africans with major events (and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa for that matter), Supersport holds the much more comprehensive coverage of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Four standard definition Supersport channels and one in HD are airing the Games (SS4, SS5, SS6, SS7, and SSHD). Even Supersport Maximo is involved for the Portuguese language coverage, particularly for Commonwealth members Mozambique, with select events like swimming and track along with both ceremonies--2010 Commonwealth Games Supersport TV schedule here and Supersport's Commonwealth field hockey TV schedule. Supersport's showing every event out there in it. From 5am to well after midnight, those channels show live events and highlights from Delhi, India. Supersport 4, in particular, airs select events with daily highlights. With a seven-person crew including James Wokabi (from Kenya) and Crystal Arnold, there will be, of course, an emphasis on the pan-Africanism that South Africa is working on and showing through the likes of Supersport, at least in sports, transmitted all through Africa; it won't be just South African athletes but other African Commonwealth athletes in interviews, coverage, highlights, and up-to-the-minute news. SS5 and SSHD wrap up the action with daily one-hour highlight shows at 8pm. With a new satelite dish installed at Supersport's Rustenburg campus, it's all now possible. Now if it can get back into the Olympics, which I'm sure it will do with SABC for London after that Vancouver disaster, everything should be OK. One thing I don't understand with South Africa's coverage with big events is the fact that neither SABC nor Supersport has thrown a bone for the Afrikaans language coverage of those sports like it does to Portuguese. There are some solid Afrikaner athletes in them, even with no Afrikaners in the World Cup donned Bafana Bafana jerseys, some Afrikaans coverage would've been nice.

A much more comprehensive Commonwealth Games broadcast schedule with CBC, CBC Sports.ca, and Bold. If you're a Canadian looking for the CBC to show some lawn bowling, archery, shooting, rugby sevens, netball, squash, table tennis, even in the most fleeting glimpses, sorry, Canada's not a significant or competitive power in those sports. So CBC isn't planning to show them, not even on their website. To me, as an American, Canada's coverage in the Commonwealth Games is a bit disappointing because of these omissions. I can understand Canada is not as big on them like their Commonwealth allies with other sports in the way at this time with NHL hockey coming up, but next time in Glasgow, at least be as comprehensive like CTV did with Vancouver 2010 or even the CBC itself with Beijing in installing multiple live and on-demand streams for this. Furthermore, Radio-Canada, CBC's French language arm, is NOT doing the Commonwealth Games

Aussie viewers follow the gold

While some critics argue no-one cares about the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, it seems Aussies still love to watch Aussies winning gold medals, with many wins drawing big ratings.

More than a million people tuned in to either Network Ten or their digital offshoot One to watch Kylie Palmer, Alicia Coutts, Leiston Pickett, Jack Bobridge, Matthew Cowdrey, Geoff Huegill, Shane Perkins and Alethea Sedgman, among others, win gold over the past week of coverage.

Huegill's 50m butterfly win and Coutts' third gold medal both generated more than 1.3 million figures.

Delhi Games boost pay TV despite free-to-air alternative

THE Delhi Commonwealth Games has boosted audiences for pay-TV network Foxtel, despite the event appearing on two free-to-air channels.

Foxtel has dedicated 12 channels to the Games -- six in high definition, replicated in standard definition -- and given the feed free to Fox Sports subscribers.

While the Ten network has trumpeted about audiences of about a million viewers each evening, Foxtel has seen its own coverage on the themed channels help to expand subscription TV's total share of audience.

Sports which would have been largely ignored in the days of single channel coverage of the games such as archery, lawn bowling and shooting have benefited from hours of dedicated coverage on Foxtel, surprising network executives with the interest that they have generated.

While the channels themselves are not measured separately by measurement company OzTam, figures comparing "other subscription TV channels" last week to figures from the week prior to the games show a massive jump in viewers.

Total subscription TV audiences have also jumped.

In the week before the games other channels commanded a share of between 1.5 per cent and 1.9 per cent of subscription viewers.

But in the first week of the games the figures jumped to more than 8 per cent, including shares of 9.8 per cent of all subscription TV viewers last Wednesday and 10.5 per cent on Thursday.

The variety of coverage appears to have had an impact on viewing habits in homes that have subscription TV, with 55 per cent of viewing time in those households being on subscription TV channels the week before the Commonwealth Games.

But the share jumped to 60.7 per cent on the first Monday of the Games broadcasts on Foxtel and has been running consistently between 57 and 60 per cent.

The only coverage of the CWG that I've chanced upon on US TV...on BBC World News no less...was a story about the snakes/cobras being found in the venues and the Village and how they were handled w/ "kid gloves," and then taken out and released back into the wild.

It was all very exciting viewing and oh, so close to the SPORTING action of the Games. Lucky me!!

Why didn't Doordorshan, India's government-run TV network and holders of the 2010 Commonwealth Games for hosts India, bothered to release a TV schedule for DD National and for DD Sports? We all know HD was definitely in the plans and was used for the nation, as it is a major event for HD's promotion there. And according to Wikipedia's page on the broadcast list, it is the only outlet for Indians. You would think Indians would like to see comprehensive coverage of the Games on their home soil.

FOXTEL's and SKY Sport/Prime's comprehensive coverages are coming, I promise.

Delhi Gold (Delhi 1) on FOXTEL served for the best moments of the day's Commonwealth Games actions including both ceremonies with plenty of gymnastics live and in full and was hosted by Steve Liebmann. Other studio hosts included Vancouver returnee Tiffany Cherry, Tracey Holmes, and Adam Peacock. Delhi 2 dealt with swimming and diving everything from the swimming heats to the finals and diving starting from the prelims with Ray Hadley and Susie O'Neill having called the action, while the diving commentary came from former diver Mike Murphy. All of it from both sports live and in full. DELHI 3 was home to track and field with the commentators Aussie track legend Raelene Boyle and Peter Donegan. DELHI 4 dealt the field athletics events with the legendary Daley Thompson and one of Australia's most experienced field athletics announcers Mike McCann providing the call. All track and field activities were shown live and in full on both channels. DELHI 5 anchored Cycling and the rugby sevens live and in full events with Scott McGrory and Matt Keenan at the velodrome. DELHI 6 broadcasted various sports like netball, boxing, weightlifting, synchronized swimming, tennis, field hockey, lawn bowling, shooting, archery, squash, wrestling, and table tennis. DELHI 2-5 also aired such sports. All events were shown live and in full on both standard and HD. All of the coverage was shown also online through FOXTEL's website.

Netball had Anne Sargeant, one of netball's greatest players with John Harker. David Christison and Rechelle Hawkes and David Wansbrough dabbled with field hockey. Liz Chetkovich and longtime, respected Australian sportscaster who attended 8 Olympics and is no stranger to Commonwealth and Asian Games Garry Wilkinson provided analysis and commentary from the gymnastics action for years, this time calling for FOXTEL. Chief rugby commentator is Greg Clark and Rod Kafer were at the rugby sevens.

Roving reporters were Shirvo, James Bracey, Sarah Jones, Rebecca Wilson, Gus Worland. They were all out and about in Delhi with the action and color throughout the host city. They brought interviews with athletes, their famiilies, and fans to put inside the Games coverage.

India it to probe into allegations of corruption and mismanagement at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Investigators will be looking at the awarding of contracts and how the work was supervised.

Former Auditor-General VK Shunglu is to look at all aspects of the event's organisation and planning.

The Games were initially beset by construction delays and complaints about the athletes' accommodation, but were later hailed as a success.

After the troubled start, Commonwealth Games head Mike Fennell praised the event as competition drew to a close.

Despite that praise, India's prime minister said an investigation was needed into an event which became a global story for the wrong reasons.

"The government has decided to constitute a high-level committee under... VK Shunglu to look into all matters relating to organising and conduct of the Commonwealth Games 2010," said a spokesman for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Investigators are due to visit the Games' organising committee on Monday to audit its accounts.

With just days before the Games opened, workers were racing to finish the athletes' village. Some teams initially held back their athletes after reports emerged of dirty bathrooms and exposed wiring and flooding.

Would be interesting to know who was used on the World Feed. Think all broadcasters dipped in at some point - the BBC seemed to use them for the athletics one morning at least on the red button interactive service, but then when it was shown on network the regular BBC guys were commentating.

Also anyone found any caps/videos of the Foxtel interactive service. Pushbutton.tv developed the Vancouver one and has some caps and a video on their website. I'd have thought they probably tweaked it for Delhi too, but seen no caps of it anywhere.

The BBC unfortunately now just use a standard sports multiscreen layout for all such events rather than the tailored interactive services we saw through to around 2006. Indeed for Freeview viewers I reckon we only had less than half the coverage of four years ago. In Melbourne we had live coverage pretty much from the first event to the last on the network, plus two further streams which were pretty much 24/7 throughout the games. In Delhi though coverage began around 8/9am - 4-5 hours after action began, and we only have one interactive stream, and that was only used for live coverage. We didn't get rolling highlights or delayed coverage at night.
