Remember all that whining from some of the media re Vancouver 2010?

Recommended Posts

When you look back at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, it has become clear that all of the whining from some of the media (specifically the British and Russian media) were really whining. Vancouver 2010 was successful despite the weather challenges (and this will happen in Sochi too! There are palm trees in the city), and in the end, the Games went well and the facilities were first-class. Contrast this with what is happening in New Delhi.

Yep, the media is the media, and our tabloids are infamous the world over. Vancouver and South Africa proved the majority of the over-the-top stories wrong - that's all a host city or country can do and is the most effective remedy for media sensationalism. India is a long way from doing that yet, so the stories and the sensationalism will continue. <_<

The media will blow small stories into big ones, but they can't generally make up stories. London 2012 has proved this to be true with the largely smooth preparations so far.

Difference in Delhi is that these are real stories not scare-mongering. There bridge and building collapses are real, happening, its not a story about potential violence or potential earthquakes in South Africa, but actual violence.

Once the venues in South Africa were complete, the "venue" stories became scare-mongering far fetched but highly imaginative stories of gangs roaming streets etc.

The difference here is that what's happening in India is very real, not sensationalized. I mean, a BRAND NEW pedestrian bridge by the Commonwealth Games Stadium collapsed and injured 23 people. That's very serious, how could that have happened? That's a huge cause for concern.

Then there's child labour IN VENUE CONSTRUCTION!

And of course, the Olympic Village. Is this how you treat the world's finest athletes? Is this how you treat the participants of the event you're about to be holding? The village should have been fully completed weeks ago to an acceptable standard.

With Vancouver, preparations leading up to the Games were excellent. CEO John Furlong actually received a long standing ovation at the IOC Session that was held a week before the Games started, and apparently that's quite rare. But of course, things went downhill on Feb. 12 with the luge accident, the cauldron malfunction, and the Cypress Mountain snow issues. But other than that, it was indeed a splendid and very successful Olympics.
