1993 Sydney 2000 Olympic Bid TV Special

Recommended Posts

Just finished uploading this series of videos from a Channel 7 special news presentation first broadcast in 1992, then edited and updated for just before the decision. Unfortunately the first few minutes are trashed thanks to bad video recoridng but the 4 following clips are the guts of the show:

This segment looks at the financials and tourism aspects of the bid plus looks back at Barcelona.

Transport, security, accommodation, village, broadcasting and venue plans are reviewed (note the changes from the planned venues from pre-1993 to the final delivered games)

More to follow...

Really makes me miss the old days, anyone think we will ever see a Sydney again?

If you mean an Olympics that spends less on security than it does venues or the athlete village, possibly not.

However I think London will go some way to capturing the spirit though of friendly efficiency, whilst Rio will have echoes of the attraction of a physically beautiful city with great passion for partying.

Now some more video...

There are some break ups in the video quality but some cool stuff in my not so humble opinion showing international reaction and the losing bids.

Thanks for those trips down memory lane, Seb! It can still bring a shiver to my spine and a tear to my eye to see some of those bid videos!

Do you have the bid video that used "Your The Voice" as the background music?

Sad to say no Rols...I have heard of it but not seen it.

And now the last of the vid segments:

And now, 17 years to the day (adjusting for time difference)...the actual announcement:

Still the happiest moment in my life :)

I remember it sooooo well. Maybe not THE happiest day (or night, rather) of my life, but one of them. I couldn't sleep, of course, before the announcement, and certainly not after. I ended up hopping on the Ferry from Balmain to Circlar Quay as soon as the first runs started. And then into work - which of course, as a major newspaper, meant there was only one thing to really cover that day.

I always loved the bid logo more than the final one we ended up with.
