Belgrade 1992/1996

Do anyone have any information of these two bids ? Venues ? Bid info ? Anything at all ?

It would have been nice to see Yugoslavia host the games during its "Golden Age". Even if, Belgrade was never the match for the likes of Barcelona, Paris, Athens or Melbourne. I would have love the Yugoslavs proposal on hosting the games. Haven't much though, just two promo videos for their '92 bid.

Well, they got their shot in 1984.

Sarevejo (sp?) was nice, but would have been a tiny magnitude in comparison to a Summer Games.

They were already falling apart by 1992-1996...so no way could they have hosted a Summer Games.

Well, we have to backtrack a bit. After all, Barcelona and Atlanta were selected in '86 and '90 respectively just before Yugoslavia crumbled, although tension was rising then.

Which raises another question, what would IOC have done had Belgrade won 1992/1996 ? By then Yugoslavia was at war, would Seoul jumped at a second time ? Or would another bid cities take over the games ?

Probably Los Angeles if it was for '92, or Seoul if it was for '96.

Although, despite the long shot initially, there was still no way Belgrade would've been awarded '96 right after Barcelona. If the Games were going back-to-back to Europe, it would've been Athens '96.

In hindsight, I really don't know what in the world Manchester & Belgrade were thinking. It's akin to 2016; there was no way the Games were going back to Europe right after London. That's Y most of the Europeans, with rational thinking, sat out the 2016 race.

When Tito (the Yugoslav war hero who was able to keep the republics united) died and the constitution was changed following his death things were destined to fall apart. The constitution defined the lines of the republics exactly (and created the problems of Kosovo and Vojvodina) and breed the seeds of seperation (obviously the fears of Serbian dominance was already there in Slovenia and Croatia). By the mid 80's it was going to happen and anyone with knowledge of the region knew things were going to explode. The IOC would have known full well the risks of sending the games to Belgrade. The voting results show that.
