paul
...here's an interesting one about a couple 2007 pan am open water athletes who developed severe life-long diseases after competing in open water events in Rio. One of them had to ultimately have part of his intestines removed (he just won a gold in Toronto), the other was unable to compete again including in Beijing the following year in the Olympics inaugural open water events. Curiously, you missed the other 2 "mega protests" held this year in Brazil, maybe at that time you were not interested in bad news from Brazil... March 15 "mega protests" http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/poder/2015/03/1603223-petistas-se-assustam-e-ministros-de-dilma-chamam-protesto-de-3-turno.shtml April 12 "mega protests" http://veja.abril.com.br/blog/ricardo-setti/politica-cia/protestos-do-dia-12-de-abril-manifestantes-enfrentarao-o-desafio-de-nao-fazer-menos-do-que-o-milhao-da-avenida-paulista/ Thankfully, we live in a county with freedom of speech, where the right to protest and make you opinion be heard is guaranteed by our constitution. About yesterday's protests, the a big former president Lula inflated as a prisioner became a national meme!!! And we have some really funny ones! paul
...that's hillarious...and nice for him that he looks younger. are all those building there on the plaza used for government?......i was very influenced by Niemeyer's Brasilia when I was a kid. Nice to see your lawn is as brown as ours on the mall DC. Do you know anything about the test even camera crew that was held up at gunpoint for all their equiptment? I heard roberies are up 25% this year in Rio....what the hell is happening!? Edited August 17, 2015 by paul

Nice to see your lawn is as brown as ours on the mall DC. Yes, this is the Ministeries Monumental axis in Brasilia and the buildings were projected by Niemeyer. I like the way the buildings are place, like the government is a table, with congress, presidential palace and judiciary building in the end, and the ministeries in the big avenue... All people who ever been to Brasilia and Washington say the cities are similar. Do you know anything about the test even camera crew that was held up at gunpoint for all their equiptment? I heard roberies are up 25% this year in Rio....what the hell is happening!?Robberies happen everywhere... And if Rio suffered a increase of robberies, I would blame on the hunting Federal Police is doing against drug-dealers, but anyway, compare daily-basis Rio with Rio during any big event is truly an empty argument... Govt. will mutilpy the police force by 6 and add militaries in the streets... Rio already proved several times the city can host any big event with security (indeed, events with far more people than Olympic Games)... How many events more Rio needs to host to prove a point to few people like you Paul??? Edited August 17, 2015 by DannyelBrazil
paul
I didn't say it would be unsafe durring the games....I think that will be the safest time. ...by the way...crime is increasing a lot in DC and some other cities here so don't be too sensitive. And oh do we love a good protest/riot these days. Edited August 17, 2015 by paul

And oh do we love a good protest/riot these days. That's the same thing I think. So far, Rio improved a lot the daily basis crime rate... Still far from desirable. All big cities in the world have its own crime waves. I feel sad for DC.

paul
S. Korean surfer comes down with apparent virus in Rio Olympic sailing venue SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean wind surfer has been hospitalized with an apparent viral infection after competing in waters scheduled to host sailing events at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games next year, a report said Thursday. Testing Rio waters: Korean wind surfer taken to hospital RIO DE JANEIRO — South Korean wind surfer Wonwoo Cho got his first ride in an ambulance the other day, taken to a Rio de Janeiro hospital with dehydration, vomiting, a headache and dizziness. Cho is one of four athletes to have "officially" fallen ill so far at the week's Olympic sailing test event in Rio de Janeiro's polluted Guanabara Bay. Officials acknowledge the reporting is incomplete with many teams and some of the 300 athletes skittish about disclosing illnesses. JMarkSnow2012
Officials acknowledge the reporting is incomplete with many teams and some of the 300 athletes skittish about disclosing illnesses. - presumably because in such circumstances they really need some form of medication. bairrosfelipe
300 athletes. One got sick. Most likely it was nothing related with the bay. Only 0.3% of cases. I believe that Asians know math enough to know that the bay was not guilty. Anyway I thought that South Koreans already had become accustomed to sail in polluted waters, especially in the Busan Bay, since they hosted the Olympics in 1988. LDOG
He's the only one that got sick, but others have complained about hitting plastic bags or stuff while sailing. Work is being done in Guanabara but there's still a long way to go.

bairrosfelipe
Ignorance at its finest. In my opinion ignorance is letting yourself be manipulated by the media sensationalist who just wants to be successful with this type of liar news. We all know that Rio has hosted a lot of world sailing events in Guanabara Bay and never had problems. And now just because ONE athlete, 300, representing 0.3% of all athletes who competed you make a huge drama! Its not 1, 2 or 3%, is just 0.3%. Please, this is regrettable.
