Athensfan Posted July 18, 2014 Report Share Posted July 18, 2014 - think it's becomes clearer each cycle that the Olympics doesn't make a city or it's people better that they already are. -the ioc take advantage of locations they want to be in if the location also wants to have a party for any number of reasons that are not always the same for each city. -it's a lot of fun to have a glamorous sporting competition with all the drama and glory it can bring if special interests and public interests can be convinced they will -benefit...whether they do or not. -the special interests become a huge part of the machine that convinces the pubic that they will benefit...whether that is the case or not -more often than not the host is left holding many bags of debt, unnecessary facilities, fallout after incidents or legal actions arise, damaged reputation if dirty laundry is aired etc.etc. -however the host can hold on to "glory" false or not for eternity. I totally agree with this. However isn't it encumbent on the hosts and on the IOC to try to find a better way so that the hosts get more than "fun" and potentially false "glory?" Particularly when billions are at stake? And for all this talk about separating Olympic operating expenses from other infrastructure projects, let's not forget that a good part of why the IOC votes for a given bid is the extra bells and whistles that get thrown in and make it feel like the whole city is getting a makeover for the Games. The IOC LOVES all that stuff -- much more than they're admitting right now. So even though those projects are technically "elective," in practice they're not because they are necessary to induce the IOC to choose your bid. Let's have fun in Rio! Not make fun of Rio =P I think you guys are on the wrong site if you just wanna talk about how fabulous it is that Rio is hosting and how special everything there is. Actually, We're maybe in the wrong site, but, somehow in the right section, since this very one is called "Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Games The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio, Brazil. Keep up-to-date here." I feel very comfortable to talk how fabulous cool is to have the games at my city and how special eveything can be. Nothing wrong, right, buddy? the economy is getting more complicated, there is a degree of social unrest, promises have been broken, some facilities have been delayed, politicians are all over the place and confusing, there is scandal or corruption surrounding the IOC and FIFA......it's a little intriguing.Good, let's agree with every sentence! - Economy is stagnant, yes, macroeconomics had been a ****, but microeconomics is great, so, for a country that experienced up to 2,700% inflation/year, we had progressed. - If you call 200 people in a city with 20 million (last protest we had in Brazil) a social unrest, okay, I agree there is some social unrest somewhere in Brazil. - Agreed again! Politicians always breaks promises... I already gave up on believing on them. You should do the same... - Delayed, some works for Rio 2016 are sure delayed, but we showed several times that we always get delays, but we did delivered amazing events lots of times... Delayed, but delivered. - Yes, I hate Brazilian politicians more than you, be sure - FIFA and IOC are corrupt... I think the world agree with us! We agreed in everything!!!!! Now let's agree that I'm 100% sure Rio will do a very special games in 2016, that isn't really even a question for me.YAY!!!! Agreed!!! Bring more caipirinhas! And 1.3 kilometers of track have already been placed on the stretch between Leblon and Sao Conrado. Line 4 will be 16 kilometers long and will have six stations. The prediction is that the route between the district of West Zone and South Zone is done in 15 minutes and about 300 thousand people use the line daily. Justice will determine operation of ticket sales for the Rio 2016 Olympics The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that, unlike FIFA, will submit to regulatory agencies in Brazil entire project of ticket sales for the 2016 Games, before releasing it. The decision is to avoid any kind of legal problem and avoid raids that the governing body of football faced in the process of marketing the tickets. At the meeting last week, the IOC president Thomas Bach, made this statement to President Dilma. The prediction is that the plan for ticket sales is known in September. In total, nine million tickets will be available to the public and the categories of tickets will be divided equally within the arenas. The larger input value has at least the same area of the cheapest. The minimum price is US$ 10.00 (R$ 22.00). The system of ticket sales of the editions of the Olympic Games is totally different from that used in the World Cup. Entries for the World Cup are operated, sold, and its revenues are under the responsibility of FIFA. For the Olympics, the task of operating, selling and collection remain with the Games Organizing Committee. The IOC does not sell or receives revenues from tickets. Security Operation used in the World Cup will be a legacy for Rio 2016 The Ministry of Defence decided that the planning of defense and security for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Rio 2016 will be based on assembled for the World Cup operation. I think if people were told that the stadiums were to be privately financed and then were actually built with public funds, then their anger would still be justified. However if these numbers are true it just shows how easy it is to start a smear campaign via social media against such large targets such as mega sporting events. Actually, the "social unrest" in Brazil have/had several reasons, from a group who got media attention after Police being agreesive against them in a tiny protest in 2013, to politics (don't forget, 2014 is presidential election in Brazil) to a nation-wide bad mood about how our public services are terrible in general (specially Health and Education), and of course, people who is simply against the tournament. The aluminium structure - 25m wide and 12m high - was the largest of its kind in the UK and became a focal point for the city when it hosted Olympic football, including the Brazil team, at St James’ Park. Now the rings, stored at a Shepherd Offshore warehouse on the Tyne, are being dusted down and prepared for a journey to the South Atlantic courtesy of the Brazilian navy. Once they arrive in Rio they will be hoisted up and displayed as part of the Rio 2016 Olympics. Leader of Newcastle City Council, Cllr Nick Forbes, said: “The rings were one of the most recognisable images from the Olympic celebrations and really put Newcastle on an international stage. It was sad when they eventually had to come down. It would be a real shame - and a waste - for them never to be see again so the council thought long and hard about what to do with them. It’s great that Newcastle’s Olympic rings will adorn another major city, and that our residents can share a connection with the residents of Rio.” Director of Communications for the Municipal Olympic Company, Marta Tellez, will arrive in Newcastle on Friday (July 25) to inspect the rings on behalf of the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro.
