Why not a single visit to Airport's work site??? There are plenty of images of the works running in the internet!!! Back to Guanabara Bay I'm not denying Guanabara Bay is polluted, but at same time, AND BBC DIDN'T SAID ONE WORD ABOUT THAT, Rio is running the BIGGEST ENVIRONMENTAL DEPOLLUTION PROGRAM IN COURSE IN PLANET EARTH BY NOW. The goal is to keep clean the entrance of the bay, where the Olympic sailing events will take place - and this have been achieved. I'd find your posts a lot more interesting if you could correct inaccuracies without resorting to the kind of paranoia some Indian posters displayed in the build up to Delhi 2010. There is no campaign against Brazil. The problem is not about inaccuracy of the problem... I just said Guanabara is really polluted - it's more polluted north and less polluted south (in the entrance). But why not show the efforts to clean it in the same report??? I watched that video and all of the Brazilians in it said that cleaning the bay is a prime objective. It's a problem and an opportunity and an interesting story. That's it. gotosy Posted October 5, 2012 Report Share Posted October 5, 2012 Nuzman re-elected head of Brazil Olympic Committe RIO DE JANEIRO — Carlos Nuzman was Friday re-elected head of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) despite charges that he was to blame for a scandal involving the unauthorized downloads of files belonging to organizers of the 2012 London Olympics. COB president for the past 17 years, and current head of the organizing committee of the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 70-year-old Nuzman garnered 30 yes votes and one against in a secret vote in which he was running unopposed. Voting were the leaders of the 30 Brazilian Olympic confederations and some COB members. Two electors did not show up, including Jose Maria Marin, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation. Voting against was Eric Leme Maleson, president of the Brazilian Ice Sports Federation. Joao Havelange, the 96-year-old former head of world football governing body FIFA, came to COB headquarters to lend his support to Nuzman. Nuzman began his sporting career as a volleyball player at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In 1975, he was named president of the Brazilian volleyball confederation. He became COB chief in 1995 and has been member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 2000. At the COB, he has been instrumental in securing sponsors' backing for Olympic sports. Nuzman also helped Brazil win the right to stage thr Pan-American Games (Rio in 2007) and the 2016 summer Olympics. Wednesday, Brazilian football great Romario, now a socialist lawmaker, expressed concern that Nuzman might be re-elected as COB chief as he was the only candidate. Last week, the former FC Barcelona striker and 1994 World Cup winner blamed Nuzman for the Olympic scandal in which 10 Brazilians made unauthorized downloads of files belonging to organizers of the London Games. "The guilty party in such cases never surfaces but we know very well the COB president is to blame," Romario said in a message posted on his official website, describing the affair as "shameful". Brazilian sports analyst Juca Kfouri meanwhile called the incident "the first scandal of the 2016 Rio Olympics". Nuzman dismissed Romario's charges, saying the latter "had no knowledge of the case". He also read out a statement sent by Paul Deighton, head of the organizing committee of the London Olympics, playing down the affair. But Romario has also called for a probe of the COB over allegedly questionable sales for Rio's summer Games in 2016. Brazil has two winter sports federations, one for skiing/snowboarding/biathlon and the other one for all ice sports (including skating, ice hockey, curling and sliding sports). Good. Wish good luck to them. Who knows if he was elected could have seen a Brazilian ice sport medal. Its possible. People in Brazil is waiting anxiously for this day for long long time... - not. But I would be glad to see you as Brazilian President of any winter sports federation. No doubts you know more about ice sports than any Brazilian. Inaugurated on October 27, 1912, the cable car ferries visitors to the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain, the 395 meters (1,250 feet) tall iconic granite peak that towers over Rio de Janeiro. The original "bondinho" was a wooden car similar to the yellow tramways that plied the streets of Rio at the time. It was given its current "floating diamond" shape in 1972. It was the third passenger cable car in the world after the Mount Ulia system in Spain in 1907 and the Wellerhorn tramway in Switzerland in 1908. A visitor must first take a cable car to a lower hill called Morro da Urca before boarding a second car to the top of the SugarLoaf. The original cable car ran for 60 years, said Maria Ercilia Leite de Castro, head of the privately-owned Sugarloaf Aerial Tramway company. "My father joined the company as technical director. He then built a new cable car bigger and more modern," Leite de Castro told AFP. "He thought the cable car needed to have glass on all sides. He wanted it to look like a diamond that you would see above the city whether its was going up or down, and for the people inside the cabin to have a 360 degree view of the city," she said. The Rio project was the brainchild of Augusto Ferreira Ramos, an engineer who decided in 1908 to link the city's Vermelha beach to Sugarloaf Mountain, a distance of some 1.4 kilometers (0.9 mile). Ferreira Ramos wanted the world to have a new image of Rio, which was then the country's capital and in the process of becoming a modern city. "Ramos was viewed as a madman. Even his fellow engineers suggested to him that the planned system should link the Sugarloaf directly to a nearby mental hospital," Castro told AFP. The original wooden cars could ferry 22 people. In 1972 the capacity was increased to 75 with the introduction of the diamond cable cars, but reduced to 10 in 2007 due to the heavier weight of passengers. The cable cars have served as a prop for countless movies, including the 1979 James Bond thriller "Moonraker." Prominent past visitors include Albert Einstein and US president John F. Kennedy. This year 1.5 million tourists, half of them foreigners, are expected to visit Sugarloaf Mountain, slightly less the total for its nearby rival, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer, located atop the 710-meter (2,300-foot) Corcovado mountain. Ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 summer Olympics, the tramway's two stations are to be modernized with faster access to avoid waiting lines.
