RIO 2016™ APPOINTS EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS FOR LIVE CEREMONIES AND MAJOR EVENTS The consortium is formed by the Italian event, advertising and TV holding Film Master Group and Brazilian large event producers SRCOM The Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games has appointed the consortium Cerimonias Cariocas 2016 as the executive production company for live ceremonies and major events at the Rio 2016™ Games. The consortium is formed by the Italian event, advertising and TV holding Film Master Group and Brazilian large event producers SRCOM. The decision was the result of a comprehensive international selection process of more than five months undertaken by the Organising Committee. The creative aspects were excluded from this process and will be the object of a future selection phase, restricted to Brazilian talent. With operating centers in Milan, Rome, Madrid and Dubai and international partnerships fostered over more than 30 years of experience, the holding Film Master Group was responsible for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is seen as one of the world’s leading experts in the staging of top level performances and ceremonies, having produced large scale, high profile events in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, SRCOM has over 20 years of experience working alongside a broad network of partners and suppliers to meet the needs of its clients, both in Brazil and abroad. It has become renowned for the production of events such as the New Year’s Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach, in Rio, from 2008 to 2011; the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Rio 2011 CISM World Military Games; and the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games emblem launch. The consortium Cerimônias Cariocas 2016 was selected for having presented the highest average score proposal combining all the selection process criteria outlined in the regulations, such as prior experience, suggested approach to the Rio 2016™ Games live ceremonies and major events and to the executive management, planning and control methodology, synergy between consortium companies, proposed staff structure, continuity and risk management, and financial aspects. The core team of the consortium includes: Ric Birch, Master of Ceremonies A professional of international reputation, his name is always associated to mega events due to his more than 25 years of experience in Olympic Games ceremonies. As production director, executive producer and general director, respectively, he organised and produced the Olympic Games ceremonies in Los Angeles 1984, Barcelona 1992 and Sydney 2000. Birch was the international artistic consultant for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and a consultant for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. He was also the executive director of ceremonies for the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games and World Expo 1988. Abel Gomes, President The most prominent and renowned scenographer in Brazil, Abel Gomes has more than 30 years of experience creating and directing large performances. He is also the founder and director of P&G Cenografia, a 150-staff company associated to SRCOM, engaged in creating, building and assembling stage sets. Abel Gomes started his career at TV Globo, for which he created the design and scenography of highly rated TV shows. His vast CV also includes designing the scenography for and directing events such as the Rio 2011 CISM World Military Games; the New Year’s Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach, in Rio (since 2008); the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games emblem launch; the Lagoa Christmas Tree, in Rio; and the Brazil Formula 1 Grand Prix. Marco Balich, Vice-president Balich has conceived and produced immensely successful events as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2002, he headed up the project of the Turin 2006 handover ceremony at the Closing Ceremony of the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Among its top accomplishments are: the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of 2009 Mediterranean Games, described by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president as one of the most beautiful ceremonies ever produced for the Games, and the Opening Ceremony of the Donbass Arena, in Ukraine. He was also the artistic director of the Venice Carnival in 2008, 2009 and 2010; an IOC and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) consultant for the Beijing 2008 Games; the creative director for the Mexico Independence’s bicentennial celebrations, in 2010; and the creator and producer for the 75th anniversary celebrations of FC Shakhtar Donetsk, in Ukraine, in 2011. Flavio Machado, Vice-president He started his career at P&G Cenografia in 1999 in the Client Service department. In 2004 Machado joined SRCOM as a director for Design and Development of Proprietary Projects. Currently, as the company’s executive producer and partner, he is responsible for the creative direction, production management and administrative control of all SRCOM events. He was also the artistic director of events such as the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games emblem launch (2010); the New Year’s Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach, in Rio (2011); and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Rio 2011 CISM World Military Games. Well, Thank God he's out now! The man is running out of ideas and starting to repeat itself (Guadalajara 2011). Plus, his cauldron lighting scenarios are booooring. Salt Lake had one piece of art of a cauldron tower and we got that awkward crawling flame. Rio had the best cauldron ever and was directly lighted without any special effects. Salt Lake City had their cauldron inspired by the Fire Within theme of the games. That's was dramatic and rare, and all Givens made for it was the flame crawling up the structure to pop up there. I mean, it was a spiral structure, not just stick and burner. Not that hard to imagine a more elaborate lighting method. The same with Rio 2007. Inspiring sun-shaped cauldron filling the 'Share the Energy' motto of the games, a full-spherical flame. And the final bearer just touches it and the fire's inside... I don't know if that was the case with Salt Lake but Rio 2007 cauldron wasn't designed by Givens' company. The thing is: A beautiful cauldron isn't enough if the creative can't think of it as THE climax of an opening (or closing) ceremony. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

People from abroad can't understand much the concept of having both side in one place, that is what Brazil is: rich and poor, developed in certain areas, undeveloped in others... A total of 172 sports venues in 73 cities and 18 states in the five regions of the Brazil were considered. The Rio 2016™ Pre-Games Training Venues will be presented to all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) through an online guide to be launched during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
