I have a question, for Canoe/kayak the winner of the Pan Ams qualifies. But wikipedia says that Argentina qualified in the k2 200m, yet Canada won the event? Can anyone explain that?

I believe that is a mistake.

Athlete quota places will be allocated to the respective NOC and not to Competitor(s) that achieved the place in the qualification event.

ii) An athlete can qualify and compete in one or more events; however the athlete can only acquire one athlete place for its NOC regardless of how many places or boats that athlete qualifies in other events.

(For example, Athlete A qualifies in K1 and K2 with athlete B from the same NOC. This would result in two athlete quota places and two boats being eligible for the Olympic Games. The quotas would be attributed to the largest boat category qualified, in this example it would be K2. The third athlete quota would be reallocated according to the unused athlete quota places process in the K1 category).

However at the Pan American Games four different athletes won the K2-1000 and K2-200 events. Someone has changed it back on wikipedia.

Upon further research:

At the Continental Qualification Events an NOC can only qualify one place per boat category regardless of the distance. Should the NOC qualify in both distances in the same boat category then the NOC will be attributed the place in 1000m for men and 500m for women. The unused athlete quota place in the 200m distance will be reattributed to the next best ranked NOC in that event, not yet qualified.

That must be the most stupid qualification rule. The best athletes should compete.

BUENOS AIRES Nov 13 (Reuters) - World champions Argentina, who missed out on their usual ticket to the Olympic women's hockey tournament, have got into the London 2012 Games by the back door.

Las Leonas (lionesses) feared they would have to play an Olympic qualifying tournament in Belgium in March after losing the final of the Pan-American Games, held in the Mexican city of Guadalajara last month, for the first time in a 4-2 upset by the United States.

Instead, the Argentine Hockey Confederation (CAH) received confirmation on Sunday they were being invited on the basis of their ranking after South Africa gave up their direct berth.

"The International Hockey Federation has made official Las Leonas' qualification to the London 2012 Olympic Games," the CAH said in a statement.

The South African Olympic Committee decided their women's team should play a qualifier having deemed the African nations tournament they won for a direct ticket to London as not being of sufficient standard.

Argentina had won the gold medal at every Pan-American Games since women's hockey was first played at the quadrennial event in 1987 -- until their shock defeat in Guadalajara on Oct. 28.

Two things that have crossed my mind, if they are not mentioned anywhere in this forum. First, when did the Kuwaitis get their status re-established as a NOC again? I read that the country was suspended last year for political interference. The reason I was asking is because the Kuwait team had to march at Singapore 2010 under the Olympic flag, instead of its national flag. Now, I see that the Kuwait has qualified athletes for London 2012 under its own flag.

Second, has the "London Prepares Series" events begun yet? I saw this subject in the London 2012's Wikipedia entry and I was curious about what that is all about.

London Prepares is what they're branding the series of (otherwise unrelated) test events for each venue. Some events are ticketed, others not. A fair amount have taken place already (they started in May), lots more to come next year.
