Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius misses Olympic 400m time in last qualifying race

South African double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has failed to qualify for the 400 meters at the London Olympics.

Pistorius finished second in 45.52 seconds in Friday’s final, outside the 45.30 he needed to run once more to at an international event to meet his national federation’s qualifying criteria for the Olympics.

Pistorius said in a statement “I am obviously disappointed that my time was just outside of the Olympic qualification time by two tenths of a second.”

He added he was still hopeful he’d be picked for South Africa’s 4x400 relay team and make history as the first amputee track athlete at the Olympics.

The relay team will be chosen by Athletics South Africa next month.

Yohan Blake upstages Usain Bolt in Olympic trials

Yohan Blake ran the fastest 100 metres in the world this year as he and Usain Bolt booked their places at London 2012 in the Jamaican National Championships and Olympic trials.

All eyes were on Olympic champion and world record-holder Bolt in the final in Kingston, but it was world champion Blake who stole his thunder, running 9.75 seconds to best his rival's time of 9.76 set in Rome last month.

Bolt was second in in 9.86, while former world record-holder Asafa Powell was just behind him in 9.88 to book the third spot on the team, although he reportedly limped away from the track.

This was the first time Blake and Bolt had faced each other since Blake took the world title in Daegu last year when the Olympic champion false started.

All eight men in the final met the Olympic A standard.

Phelps eyes another eight in London

OMAHA, Nebraska — Michael Phelps is headed to the London Olympics with a chance to match his glittering eight-gold haul of 2008.

Phelps won the 100m butterfly on the penultimate night of the US Olympic swimming trials on Sunday in 51.14sec to claim a fifth individual berth for London.

Phelps was nowhere near his world record of 49.82sec, but he was fastest in the world this year and ominously for his rivals, he said it was a ragged effort that could be vastly improved.

...

Phelps, whose unprecedented eight gold medals in Beijing four years ago took his career tally to 14, now can swim the same eight events in London: the 100m and 200m butterfly, the 200m and 400m individual medleys, the 200m freestyle and three relays.

Lochte is slated for four individual events, including showdowns with Phelps in the 200m and 400m medleys and 200m free and a title defence in the 200m backstroke, and will also see his schedule swelled by relays.

Even if he'd snagged one of two Olympic spots on offer in the 100m fly, Lochte said he wouldn't have tackled the event in London.

It would require the punishing treble he swam here on Saturday of the 100m fly, 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley.

...

While Phelps and Lochte are old hands at multiple medal campaigns, 17-year-old Missy Franklin is poised to become the first US woman to swim seven events at the Games in her first trip to the Olympics.

Franklin's convincing 200m backstroke victory in 2:06.12 gave her a fourth individual event.

The reigning world champion, Franklin posted the fastest time in the world this year and beat runner-up Elizabeth Beisel (2:07.58) by more than a second.

...

Anthony Ervin appeared ecstatic to line up one event in London -- the 50m freestyle.

The 31-year-old who walked away from swimming three years after winning 50m free gold in Sydney in 2000, was runner-up to Cullen Jones to secure his spot.

Jones and Ervin were impressive in the one-lap dash, their times of 21.59 and 21.60 the second- and third-fastest this year behind Beijing gold medallist Cesar Cielo of Brazil.

Kathleen Ledecky, 15, booked a first Olympic berth with a victory in the 800m freestyle ahead of Kate Ziegler.

At the other end of the swimming age spectrum, 45-year-old Dara Torres kept her bid to make a sixth Olympic team alive as she advanced to the final of the 50m free with the third-fastest semi-final time behind red-hot Jessica Hardy (24.56) and Christine Magnuson (24.72).

Coin toss may determine Olympics slot after photo finish

120625100224-photo-finish-story-top.jpg

Jeneba Tarmoh, foreground, and Allyson Felix cross the finish line Sunday in the women's 100 meters in Eugene, Oregon

(CNN) -- With three places up for grabs on the U.S. Olympic track team, two women tied for third place in the women's 100 meters on Sunday -- crossing the line at exactly the same time -- which means the coveted Olympic spot could be decided by a coin toss.

Sprinters Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh threw their bodies across the finish line so evenly matched that cameras recording 3,000 frames a second couldn't tell who beat whom.

Both runners recorded precisely the same finishing time, down to thousandths of a second: 11.068 seconds.

Two women beat Felix and Tarmoh: Carmelita Jeter and Tianna Madison. Their first and second place finishes give them the chance to represent the United States at the Olympics in London this summer.

But the photo finish leaves USA Track & Field with a dilemma: Who gets the third slot?

Allyson Felix faces run-off to determine 100m fate

Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh face a run-off on Tuesday to decide the USA's third women's 100m entrant in London.

Felix, 26, ran a dead heat for third place with Tarmoh at the United States Olympic trials on 24 June.

With no policy on dead heats, USA Track and Field have declared a run-off to decide the final 100m Olympic spot.

Double amputee Pistorius to race at London Olympic

JOHANNESBURG — Oscar Pistorius will become the first double amputee to compete at the Olympics after being included Wednesday in the South African 4x400-metre relay team for 2012 London Games, an official said.

The 25-year-old's selection comes five days after conceding defeat in a battle to run in the 400m at the Games as he finished 0.22 of a second outside the qualifying mark of 45.30 seconds when coming second at the African championships in Benin.

Pistorius did clock 45.20 at a meet in Pretoria last March, but could not repeat the feat at an international meet, a requirement for selection in the South African team.

Called the 'Blade Runner' and 'The Fastest Man on no legs', Pistorius was part of the South African 4x400m relay squad that came second at the 2011 world championships in South Korea although he did not run in the final.

There had been fears that South Africa would not send a relay team as no athlete qualified for the 400m and the world championship silver medal-winning team has been hit by poor form and injuries.

Pistorius runs with carbon-fibre artificial 'blades' and was cleared to compete at top level in 2008 when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned an IAAF ruling that his blades gave him an unfair advantage.

The South African had both legs amputated below the knee before turning one-year-old because of a congenital condition that meant he was born without lower leg bones.

Having failed to qualify for the 400m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics he went on to compete at the 2011 world championships in South Korea, where he made the 400m semi-final and won a silver in the 4x400m relay.

However, his omission from the relay team for the final left him venting his anger at South African officials.

Pistorius, a three-event defending champion, will also compete at the Paralympic Games in London in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x100m relay.

"I am extremely excited about the Paralympic Games in London and a big focus for me will be defending my three titles as well as being part of the South African team competing for a world record in the 4x100m relay at the Paralympics," he said.

Nigeria beat Greece, Dominican Republic beat Macedonia and Lithuania beat Puerto Rico. Meaning for the first time since 1960 Yugoslavia or one of the successor countries have failed to qualify for the Olympics.
