PRESS RELEASE

Olympic volleyball competition schedule announced

http://www.fivb.org/...388&maxsize=450

Japan and Algeria will open the volleyball competition at the 2012 Olympic Games. The two teams have only met twice before - at the 2011 World Cup and 2010 World Championships - with Japan winning both times in straight sets

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 19, 2012 – Two-time women’s gold medallists Japan, ranked third in the world, will take on world No. 16 Algeria in the opening match of the 2012 OIympic Games volleyball competition due to start at 09:30 (local time) on July 28 at Earls Court.

Japan won gold at volleyball’s debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, before winning again in 1976. The two golds were split by two silver medals at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. For Algeria, London will be only their second appearance at the Olympic Games after finishing 11th in 2008.

The men’s competition will start the following day with hosts Great Britain – participating in volleyball at the Olympics for the first time – playing world No. 9 Bulgaria, who have featured seven times previously in the Olympics with a 1980 silver their sole medal reward.

“We are pleased to announce the schedule for the volleyball competition at the London Olympic Games,” FIVB President Jizhong Wei said. “Following the exciting qualification process we concluded earlier this month we can now confirm the timing of the exciting match ups ahead.”

London 2012 Director of Sport, Debbie Jevans said: “Everything is set for the London 2012 volleyball competition. The schedule has been announced by the FIVB and we look forward to both welcoming the teams and watching some exciting matches which will comprise the best players in the world.”

Defending women’s champions Brazil will open their campaign against Olympic debutants Turkey in the last match of the opening day at 22:00. A repeat of the women’s 2008 Olympic final between Brazil and USA will take place on July 30 at 16:45.

In the men’s competition, Beijing winners USA will take on 2000 champions Serbia - in a repeat of the 2008 quarterfinal which USA won in five sets - in their opening game at 16:45 on July 29. Their match against Brazil, which will replicate the 2008 final, will happen on August 2 at 20:00.

During pool play, there are a total of six games per day broken into three sessions of two matches with women’s and men’s competition alternating one day to the other. Match times are 09:30, 11:30, 14:45, 16:45, 20:00 and 22:00 with the quarterfinals due to take place on August 7 and 8, followed by the semifinals on August 9 and 10 with the finals being held on August 11 and 12.

Michael Phelps enters 7 races at U.S. Olympic Trials

Michael Phelps, who has kept his plans for this summer’s London Olympics a secret, has entered seven races at next week’s U.S. Olympic Trials, including the grueling 400-meter individual medley, reports The Baltimore Sun‘s Jean Marbella.

According to Marbella’s report, Phelps signed up for the 200 and 400 individual medley, the 100 and 200 freestyle, the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 backstroke.

Phelps famously won all eight events he entered at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, setting a record for most gold medals in a single Games. He has the opportunity in London to become the most decorated Olympian of all-time with three more medals, which would move him past Soviet Union gymnast Larisa Latynina’s career total of 18. (Some would argue Phelps is already the greatest Olympian ever by virtue of his record 14 gold medals).

Phelps’ schedule for the Olympic Trials is probably too ambitious to be completed. Because he is likely to be chosen for relay teams at the Olympics, it’s unlikely he will attempt all seven individual events. With relays, he would be looking at 10 events, even more than the eight he raced in each of the past two Olympics. He has repeatedly stated he plans to cut back his schedule for London.

Phelps also has wavered on the 400 individual medley, which many consider the toughest swimming event. He vowed after the 2008 Games that he was finished with the event. But he has backed away from that stance over time. Marbella notes that both his coach and his mother love the event.

Is it just me or the USA has qualified more athletes than Great Britain for these Games so far? If that is the case, I am sure that this has happened before. Beijing 2008 had the home team with more athletes than any other NOC in those Games.

Well China entered athletes in all events. GB has refused some home team quotas so far.

Kookaburras, and Blacksticks women, win right to an Olympic lie-in

Posted on 20. Jun, 2012

Australia's appeal against the Olympic Games men's hockey schedule has been successful and one of their three 8.30am games has been switched to a 10.45am start.

New Zealand's women have also had one of their early starts rescheduled.

The International Hockey Federation has confirmed it has re-scheduled Australia v Pakistan on August 7 from 8.30am to 10.45am, switching the Korea v Netherlands match to the earlier start.

Kookaburras Coach Ric Charlesworth had protested when the draw was released a month ago, believing it would have unfairly disadvantaged the world number one team.

"It is only right that it should be changed, we were ready to handle whatever we were dealt but this is certainly better," Charlesworth said.

"We always expected early games but not three and I am pleased it has been rectified. The pending decision has not been at the forefront of our psyche but it is good that it's settled."

Hockey Australia chief executive Mark Anderson said he was pleased to get a positive result following the discussions that occurred after the release of the Olympic schedule.

"It was a matter that Hockey Australia, our coaches and players felt very strongly about. We are pleased that our position has been considered and that an appropriate adjustment has been made," he said.

"We advocated that a change of at least one of the three matches would ensure a more equitable draw across the competition.

The change to a later time slot for the last of our three early morning matches ensures that our team has been given an equal chance to succeed and we can’t ask for more than that."

Mr Anderson said Hockey Australia had been given a fair hearing and the organisation's issues had been considered.

"We have been given an appropriate solution, our players and coaches are pleased with the compromise position that has been reached," he said.

The Australian Olympic Committee were very supportive of our position and we appreciated their involvement in the process to achieve this outcome.

The New Zealand women have also had one of their three matches changed as a result of the appeal. They will play South Africa on July 31 at 10.45am, the Netherlands vs Japan game will now be played at 8.30am.

Sixty three nations will be represented at the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition after the unused qualification places were assigned.

Tripartite places, which are aimed at the world's smallest National Olympic Committees, were assigned by the International Olympic Committee to the Cook Islands and St Lucia in the Laser Radial and Monaco and Montenegro in the Laser.

Helema Williams (COK), Beth Lygoe (LCA), Damien Desprat (MON) and Milvoj Dukic (MNE) will up take up places on the starting line in their respective classes at London 2012.

Two further places were available with the ISAF Qualification System stating that any unused places were prioritised to Africa and Oceania with any remaining places made available to Asia, America and Europe.

Therefore Egypt were issued a place in the Men's RS:X and Kyrgyzstan, as one of the best performing new Asian nations at the 2012 Laser Worlds in Boltenhagen, Germany were allocated an unused quota place in the Laser.

Ahmed Habash (EGY) and Ilia Ignatev (KGZ) will join the four tripartite place athletes in Weymouth and Portland.

The reallocation of places now brings the Laser confirmed quota up to 49 boats with the Laser Radial on 41.

ISAF Technical Delegate Alastair Fox said, "We have seen first-hand the progression of the sailors who have been awarded tripartite as well as unused quota places and we look forward to seeing them at London 2012.

"At Beijing 2008 we had 400 sailors from 62 nations and at London 2012 we will see 380 sailors representing 63 nations. This shows the spread of our sport that has occurred in the last four years which will make for an exciting global Olympic Sailing Competition."

Coin toss may determine Olympics slot after photo finish

120625100224-photo-finish-story-top.jpg

Jeneba Tarmoh, foreground, and Allyson Felix cross the finish line Sunday in the women's 100 meters in Eugene, Oregon

(CNN) -- With three places up for grabs on the U.S. Olympic track team, two women tied for third place in the women's 100 meters on Sunday -- crossing the line at exactly the same time -- which means the coveted Olympic spot could be decided by a coin toss.

Sprinters Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh threw their bodies across the finish line so evenly matched that cameras recording 3,000 frames a second couldn't tell who beat whom.

Both runners recorded precisely the same finishing time, down to thousandths of a second: 11.068 seconds.

Two women beat Felix and Tarmoh: Carmelita Jeter and Tianna Madison. Their first and second place finishes give them the chance to represent the United States at the Olympics in London this summer.

But the photo finish leaves USA Track & Field with a dilemma: Who gets the third slot?

There appears to be no precedent for a dead heat at U.S. Olympic Team track and field trials, prompting the U.S. Olympic Committee to announce new rules Sunday.

One of the runners can give up her claim to a spot on the Olympic team.

If neither one takes that unlikely option, they'll be asked if they want to run a tie-breaking race or flip a coin.

If they choose the same option, the committee will respect their wishes.

If they disagree, they'll have to race for it.

And if both athletes refuse to declare a preference, officials will flip a coin -- a U.S. quarter to be exact.

Leaving nothing to chance, other than the flip itself, the rules also detail who gets to pick heads or tails and how the coin should be flipped.

"The USATF representative shall bend his or her index finger at a 90-degree angle to his or her thumb, allowing the coin to rest on his or her thumb," the rules say.

No date has been set for the tie-breaker to take. Both women have other races to run over the course of the week.

I honestly don't see the Tall Ferns eventually extending their Olympic basketball streak to four either. They're very close to Argentina on a competiton level, though they faced each other several times. But the Tall Ferns are slightly taller and have better overall skill than the Argentinians in their next game. Team's been in transition with a new group of people in it and been in the international wilderness since Beijing with only the help assistance of its Asian neighbors keeping their international basketball dream alive.

Lochte reaches 100 freestyle semis as Phelps withdraws

Michael Phelps took a rare morning off at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials on Thursday after withdrawing from the 100 metres freestyle heats.

Phelps, who has already qualified for the London Games in the 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle and is through to the 200 butterfly final later on Thursday, has never swum the 100 freestyle at the Olympics and only entered it as back up in the unlikely case he flopped in one of his other events.

Although he will not swim the individual 100 in London, the 26-year-old will still be involved in the 4x100 freestyle relay, just as he was in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008.

Phelps's withdrawal from the 100 leaves him with a maximum of nine events for the Olympics although he is expected to drop the 200 backstroke and stick with the same eight events he competed in at the last two Games.

His rival Ryan Lochte did enter the 100 heats and qualified fifth fastest in the hope of making the 4x100 relay team for the first time.

Lochte, who has also qualified in the 400 medley and 200 freestyle, teamed up with Phelps to win gold medals in the 4x200 freestyle relay at the past two Olympics but has never swum in the shorter relay.

He won his 100 heat on Thursday in 49.33 seconds, storming home after turning in seventh place.

It's just more of, I think, of Stuart Pearce's philiosophy in bringing in and favoring young Brits to the team with only a few over-23s allowed on the team--3 to be exact. Were it not for that, he'd be in along with Giggs, who never had a taste of major international tournaments for Wales (not counting qualification). I think that's what gave Giggs priority over Beckham.

Becks will be around in London, I'm sure, in some other capacity.
