British Wrestling in grapple for Olympic places

British Wrestling will learn on Tuesday whether the British Olympic Association will allow them to take their full allocation of wrestlers to London 2012.

The sport was awarded three host-nation places by the BOA last

year, but has failed to meet the agreed 'minimum selection criteria'.

"It's extremely important," British Wrestling CEO Colin Nicholson told BBC Sport.

"We would like athletes competing in all wrestling disciplines in London."

British performances on the mat have not matched the BOA approved targets of a top-sixteen finish at the 2011 World Championships, a top-eight place at this year's Europeans or a top-six position at an Olympic qualification tournament.

As such there is the possibility British Wrestling could have their host-nation places withdrawn.

...

To date, the rhythmic gymnasts are the only British team to have missed out on selection for the London Olympics, however they received a late reprieve and although Nicholson says he would respect any judgement made by the BOA he is hopeful of a positive outcome for the sport.

Should British Wrestling be allowed to take up their three host-nation places then they would be required to officially name their athletes by 1 June.

BOA tells British wrestling to get a grip

Britain will have just one female wrestler at the London Olympics in a further blow for a sport mired in controversy for imported talent, dubbed 'Plastic Brits', and a failed dope test by its top male medal hope.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) made the decision on performance grounds on Tuesday, rejecting a request for three places under Host Nation rules.

It also told British Wrestling, at the centre of a 'Plastic Brits' controversy to get a grip on developing the sport in Britain.

"More work needs to be done in order to ensure a meaningful post-Games legacy for wrestling, including much greater emphasis on increasing participation at the grass-roots level in the UK and a clear performance plan to qualify athletes by right for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games," a statement said.

The sole British wrestler at the Games will be in the women's under-55kg category.

No mention here of Aaron Cook then. The British Taekwando star and European Champion, expected to return to number 1 in the world at the end of the month, was not selected by British Taekwando, who opted for Lutalo Muhammad, who has to step down to a lower weight category and is only ranked 93rd in the world. It all appears to be down to Aaron Cook deciding the national set up wasn't for him and leaving it (and the cash he'd get from it behind) to set up his own training group, financed by himself. As a result he's been world number one for 13 of the last 24 months.

Aaron Cook appealed to the BOA - who quite rightly have agreed with him, refusing to accept Lotalo Muhammad's nomination from British Taekwando and summoning British Taekwando to explain themselves. The national performance director backs him, as have the World governing body, stating that British Taekwando have gone against guidelines which say those in the top 20 consistently over the last two years should be selected. Numerous Olympic legends have also weighed in expressing disgust at the possibility of an athletes Olympic dream (an athlete who is a hot prospect for gold) being ruined by small time sports politics.

Semenya picked, no Pistorius yet

Former world champion Caster Semenya has been included in South Africa's initial team for the London Olympics, while double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius hasn't been picked yet.

South Africa's Olympic committee said Wednesday's selection represents ''the bulk'' of the team to go to London, but some athletes still can qualify and be added ahead of the June 30 cutoff.

Pistorius has yet to meet the South African qualifying criteria. He needs one more time of 45.30 seconds or better before the end of the month to be eligible to compete in the 400 meters in London.

South African Olympic committee chief executive Tubby Reddy tells The Associated Press his body won't relax the qualifying criteria for Pistorius.

Britain ratifies controversial taekwondo selection

The British Olympic Association agreed on Friday to ratify a controversial taekwondo nomination that dashed world number one Aaron Cook's hopes of competing at the London Games.

The BOA said in a statement that its Olympic qualification standards panel had agreed unanimously to support the choice of Lutalo Muhammad instead of European champion Cook in the -80kg weight division.

Last week the BOA refused to ratify the nomination but British Taekwondo then voted for a third time in favour of Muhammad.

The governing World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) warned on Thursday that the dispute and a perceived lack of transparency in the selection process risked bringing the sport into disrepute.

That is a real downer on the games and I really feel for Aaron Cook (and Muhammad). It is clearly an unjust decision but with British Taekwondo not budging the BOA really had little choice but to accept it at the third time of asking. They've got to protect themselves too against all decisions being challenged - but how a World number one can not be selected for the games is beyond comprehension. They obviously selected him for the recent European Championships - so what's changed in just a few weeks?

For Open Water Swmming isn't it one per country - a recent interview with David Davies suggested that was the case as he has to beat Daniel Fogg to claim the one Team GB spot.

Home advantage seems to the key for the gate that opens the way to London. Germany has beaten Cuba 3-2 (20-18 in the 5th set) and Bulgaria has beaten France 3-1!

Germany has beaten the Czech Republic 3:1 and has qualified as the third German Team for the Olympics. Congratulations!

London 2012 Handball competition schedule announced

The London 2012 Olympic Handball competition schedule has been confirmed, revealing when teams will compete in the preliminary rounds of the tournaments on the Olympic Park.

1239753_M01.jpg

Handball action in the Copper Box

Holly Lam-Moores shoots for goal during Team GB's victory over Angola at the London Handball Cup in November 2011.

The women’s competition gets underway with reigning Olympic champions Norway taking on France in a repeat of 2011 World Championships final. Great Britain’s women will also play on 28 July – the first day of the competition – taking on fellow Olympic newcomers Montenegro.

In the men’s competition, current Olympic champions France start their tournament with a match against Great Britain on 29 July. Serbia will take on Croatia on 31 July in a repeat of the Euro 2012 Championship match.

The announcement comes after the draw was held last month to confirm the groups for the preliminary stage of the event, which takes place at the Copper Box before the action moves to the Basketball Arena.

'Brilliant matches'

International Handball Federation President Dr Hassan Moustafa said: 'The promotion of handball has been tremendous in Great Britain since London was awarded as host of the 2012 Olympic Games in June 2005.

'We are proud to welcome the world of handball in London – and we are sure that we will see thrilling, brilliant matches with the best players of the world.'

Following 10 days of preliminary competition, the knockout matches will start on 7 August. The women's medals will be awarded on 11 August, followed by the men's the next day.

Olympic Selection Criteria

With a quota of two teams maximum per gender, per country completing the 24-team fields for each gender, the FIVB announced two years ago that just 16 spots will be filled through the Olympic rankings compared to 24 in the past. These are based on standings for the 12 best results for each team on the FIVB SWATCH World Tour from the beginning of 2011 through to the conclusion of the Rome Grand Slam which finished on Sunday, the FIVB SWATCH World Championships and the AVC, Europe and NORCECA Continental Tour Finals.

An additional spot has been given to Great Britain as the host country, while the remaining seven spots will be determined differently than in the past four Olympic Games with the introduction of the FIVB Continental Cup.
