London 2012 Qualifying Events

Recommended Posts

Well Australia, France, Canada and a few others have already had their trials. I think it is to set the team and work together as a development system, especially for the relays where Swim Canada thinks they stand a good chance in the women's 4x100 freestyle and medley. I think Canada is targetting 5 medals in the pool (100m and 200m backstroke women's, 100m freestyle men's, 200m breaststroke women's, 400m freestyle men's, 1500m freestyle men's, 4x100m freestyle women's and 4x100m medley women's).

And yea are right for peaking twice for some of the athletes that barely get in. But for the potential medalist from Canada (Brent Hayden, Sinead Russel, Martha McCabe, Tera van Bielen, Ryan Cochrane) to get into the Olympics won't challenge their PBs. So its a mini-peak.

Mexico took the other Olympic spot with a 3-1 victory. Horrible tournament for the USA. Too bad they couldn't play Hope Solo in the net. She would've made some of those saves.

Ummmmmm....

Let's just say I'm still very angry about her and her team regarding last year's incapabilities along with the U-23 Olympic men now...

Japan's Kosuke Kitajima qualifies for fourth Olympic Games

TOKYO (AP) -- Kosuke Kitajima has qualified for his fourth Olympics after winning the men's 100-meter breaststroke at Japan's swimming championships.

Kitajima, who captured gold in the 100- and 200 breaststroke events at Athens and Beijing, won Tuesday's final with a time of 58.90 seconds. Ryo Tateishi finished second in 59.60 and also secured an Olympic berth.

Kitajima also competed in breaststroke at the Sydney Olympics.

Yuka Kato earned an Olympic berth by winning the women's 100 butterfly in 57.77.

Not really, this has been the system since at least 2004 and is the system used by Australia and the United States.

I don't think its fair. If an athlete meets the qualification standard they should go, regardless of the time they have in the National championship. Chantel Ven Lendgham met the standard but in the CC she missed the time by .01

These weren't national championships. They were Olympic Trials. The trials are the way to determine who goes, because (like in the 200m breakstroke) there could be 5 or 6 swimmers that have raced the qualifying time. So placement in the trials determines your Olympic berth. And swimming is only about racing, so the trials provide the best environment to select the best racers. Look at Annamay Pierse. The only person to swim a world record since the suit rules came into effect, she has never won any major championship. ven Belien and McCabe are younger and when it matters faster. They deserved to go over Pierse. Yet if it came done to a selection by time, Pierse would have made the team.

That's really not plausible. Kenyans could qualify dozens of distance athletes under this scenario, probably hundreds for the marathon, USA and Jamaica dozens of sprinters. Having Olympic Trials for events like swimming, and athletics are necessary, and it also makes them very compelling events on their own for the powerhouse countries.

I believe that for Athletics Canada you have to obtain the qualifying during the qualifying period, but don't have to do it at the trials. You just have to place within the top 3 (for more then one at the qualifying time) or finish first if you had been the only one.

I HATE the FIVB. Canada just finished a sweep of their group, without dropping a set against Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and 5th ranked Cuba, but stand no chance at the Olympics unless they get to the final and upset the Americans because the final qualification tournaments spots as based on World Ranking from January instead of placement at the continental qualification tournaments like in any other sport.

I wouldn't readily assume that Canada will meet the US in the finals. They could just as easily have a rematch with Cuba.
