The Deodoro Cluster

What the hell? There is always good things on TV at that Time here in London, England. I don't know if You was joking or serious?

Seriously dude, what's your problem? Zeke was speaking about maximizing the television coverage at the Olympics in London because generally speaking, there isn't much on after 10 besides the team sports and beach volleyball.

No, another venue is needed for most of the team sport. London was hosting games at 10:30 at night. An extra basketball arena, field hockey pitch and beach volleyball court will help prevent that.

London was hosting games at 10:30 because they wanted to have something to put on TV at that hour.

The basketball schedule for the preliminary round games in terms of timeslots was identical from Athens to Beijing to London.

No need to have a 2nd venue for a sport simply to avoid games late into the evening. That said, it is nice having action going on late and Rio isn't exactly going to be a city that shuts down early, so why not have games that late.

Despite some steoreotypes based on few bohemian districts near downtown at weekends, Rio is more a city of day than night. Actually, after dark, in weekdays, the city literally sleeps early.

Of course during the Olympics the city will work 24/7. Just pointing a fact about the city in a regular basis.

International Canoe Federation award two World Championships to new course being built for Rio 2016

The course being built for next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro has been awarded two major events by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) in an attempt to help ensure its legacy, it was announced today.

The Whitewater Stadium, currently being built in Deodoro, will host the 2017 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships and the 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships.

The decision, announced following the ICF Board meeting in Marrakech, follows a visit from senior officials to the construction site of the canoe slalom course, after which they claimed it was "wonderful".

...

Construction is now almost completed on the reservoir that will feed the 250 metres course for next year's Olympics.

Fully modular, man-made obstacles will be placed along the course to simulate the rocks found on natural rapids.

An innovation of the Rio 2016 project is the use of pre-casted slabs for the river bed.

The course design underwent innovate model testing at Prague's Czech Technical University last year and there are now 900 people working in two shifts on its construction in Deodoro.

"The general views, landscape and atmosphere of the venue will be absolutely wonderful," said Jean Michel Prono, the ICF's technical delegate who is helping oversee the building of the course.

"Now we are focusing on more specific aspects, such as channel construction, the obstacles - how we create this artificial river in the middle of Rio.

"We must shape and tune this river to have a flow of 12-13 cubic metres per second, with waves, eddies and other features.

"It is an artificial river, but it follows the principals of a natural river - and we must play with this: directing, slowing and accelerating the water along the course.

"We will have a very, very good international standard competition course, and we will probably save energy and operating costs, in comparison to London [the 2012 Olympics], as we learn from one experience to the next."

Just keep in mind it can take much longer than you expect to get between venues. The Organizers priorities are security, crowd control, VIPs and the press. Continence for pion spectators is low on their list. Entrance and exits aren't necessarily where you would expect.... crowds can be directed on long winding paths... obvious cut-through can be blocked, extra security can pop up where you don't expect, etc. I learned my lesson after it took an hour to get between two somewhat close venues on the Beijing Olympic Green.

Then again, sometimes access can be easy. The London committee had the logistical issues down pat; everything went smooth. Vancouver was the worst. There's no good way to predict. So just plan for things to take a long time, and be happy if they don't

In a straight line, they are very close to each other, indeed. But, as you said, crowds management and safety barriers will surely make it a longer way.

found it now. shows about 20 min walk on current road configurations I'm sure it will take longer once venues are complete.

Some of the world’s best canoeists are among the 122 competitors in town for the Rio 2016 canoe slalom test event, which starts on Thursday (26 November). And, having had a chance to ride the rapids at the new course in Deodoro Olympic Park this week, they are convinced it is worthy of producing Olympic champions.

“It requires a lot of work mentally because you cannot rest, you have to maintain your focus during the entire course,” said Italy’s Daniele Molmenti, who won gold in the men’s K1 event at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Brazil’s Leonardo Curcel agreed, saying: “It demands a lot from us, even when you have the skills.”

Technically challenging, the 280m course will be officially opened on Thursday before the start of the Aquece Rio International Canoe Slalom event, which runs until Sunday (29 November). Among the other leading canoeists from 26 countries who will take part are the Czech Republic’s Jiri Prskavec, who won the individual and team K1 world titles this year, France’s Emilie Fer, the K1 champion at London 2012, and Slovak twins Peter and Pavol Hochschorner, who have won medals together in the last four Olympic C-2 events – three golds followed by bronze in London.

All the Olympic events will be contested: individual canoe (C1) and doubles canoe (C2), in which competitors use single-blade paddles; and individual kayak (K1), in which double-blade paddles are used.

The canoe slalom course, which will be the centre-piece of the Whitewater Stadium during the Games, was one of the most complex construction projects for the Rio 2016 Games. The rapids were first switched on in September and the project underwent innovative model testing in the Czech Republic, at Prague’s Czech Technical University, which is famed for hydraulic engineering.

The team of engineers was led former world champion Jaroslav Pollard, now a professor at the university, who said: “Our aim was to help create a technically challenging course, with characteristics that would allow the canoeists to use their varied skills and experience.”

The test event will also allow Rio 2016 to test various aspects of its Games-time operations, with special focus on the competition area, results systems and the work of the technical officials.
