Jim856796
Contracts represent a guarantee of 4,577 additional rooms for use during the 2016 GamesThe Rio de Janeiro bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games has guaranteed that it will provide quality accommodation for the Olympic and Paralympic Families and media across both events. Since the submission of the Candidature File – including a guarantee of 40,000 rooms as required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) - the number of hotels committed to the project does not stop growing. Since February 2009, 52 new hotels have confirmed their support for the bid, adding a further 4,577 available rooms in Rio de Janeiro and the cities which will host football matches (São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Brasilia) for guests of the Games. In its Candidature File, Rio 2016 exceeded IOC requirements and the ongoing expressions of support since this submission have been very encouraging for the Bid Committee. "Accommodation is a very important feature of an Olympic bid. We had the task of finding solutions, with a focus on public stakeholders and the post-Games legacy. The Rio 2016 project met all IOC requirements, but the commitment of the hotel network is reinforced by each new contract signed," said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Rio 2016 Committee. The Rio 2016 accommodation project is also connected to the project of revitalizing the Port of Rio, officially launched by local authorities on June 23rd 2009. A village with 1,840 rooms will be built in the area while the port itself will welcome cruise ships that will also be used for Games accommodation. So Rio is going to use all the hotels that they have, plus a few condominiums, about six cruise ships situated at the port, a media village, and a "village" in each cluster (except for Copacabana). danfla
DannyelBrazil
Really? Because my initial choice was the Othon Palace at Copacabana before I recently switched to the Sheraton at Vidigal. I meant it's a smart choice about location. Sheraton Vidigal is placed exactly in the mid-way between Copacabana and Barra clusters, in an amazing location and have a semi-private beach (Brazilian law doesn't allow private beaches). The place is stunning, you can only reach the hotel by a rock-caved avenue, called Avenida Niemeyer. Really great and unique scenery. You'll love it! But, this nature scenery makes public transportation options very poor. If you are intended to rent a car or use taxis/cabs to leave the hotel, it's just perfect. But if you are intended to use buses or subway system, Copacabana is 500% better than Sheraton about this. Don't be surprise to know that Vidigal is the name of a favela in Rio. Vidigal favela is really nearby, but I never read news about Vidigal being a problem for Sheraton. Otherwise, many foreigners are buying houses there to transform this favela in a exotic neighbourhood. The seaview from there is really worthy. And if favela is a problem for you, Barra da Tijuca district is actually 100% free of favelas nearby hotels. If I have to give you a tip, my tip would be: Ipanema or Barra. Ipanema is very charming, the beach is great and have great great structure without all buzz and noise Copacabana have... Market around in the street in really great. Very carioca experience. Highly recommended by me. Barra is a little bit more sophisticated and very (very very very very) Miami-like. For those who prefers to have no third-world-looking-like-hotel-neighbourhood, Barra is just perfect. There is a very beautiful Sheraton in Barra beach, in a really amazing place. Rio have lots of options... If you want to stay in a hostel in favela, you can If you want to stay in a Miami like neighbourhood, you can If you want to stay in a vintage hotel in Copacabana Beach, you can If you want to stay in an amazing location It's up to you choose what fits better your plans. And if I could help you, please, call me =]

DannyelBrazil
Today, 10 idiots drug-dealers escaping from Police invaded a hotel in Sao Conrado and used 30 hostages for about one hour. During the pursuit a woman was shot and died (It's not confirmed if she was part of the criminals). All of them were arrested and all the hostages were set free. And this will reset all the critics about security in Rio...

I have heard that Brazil is going to face the lack of workers due to a boom in civil construction. Even giants of this sector have being training workers to build houses, buildings, not to mention the Games needed infrastructuring. At the same time, we have to remember Brazil is hosting FIFA 2014 WC which, I suppose, also needes human resources. Do you think the country will be able to manage this situation and deliver all the necessary constructions as scheduled? Tx.
Jim856796
So, should I choose the Sheraton, Rio Othon Palace, or a brand-new hotel in Barra (which was not listed in the Bid Book) as my 2016 headquarters hotel? Probably need to choose either of the former two.

Jim856796
Did you know that the Hotel Gloria used to have a total of 620 rooms (up from its original 280 or so in the original building, which was probably expanded to 400 with a wing added to the west, leaving the remaining 220 rooms to the annex)? Well, the Gloria Palace reconstruction project includes reconstruction of the annex into an office building for Eike Batista's company. I wonder if Rio will be building a hotel larger than the Othon Palace before the Games.

Jim856796
The Copacabana Palace, the Hotel Gloria, and Caesar Park are below the minimum requirement of 500 rooms. I looked at the bid book for this info.
DannyelBrazil
Windsor is the best option for your "party" Jim. Sir Rols
Here is a history of headquarters hotels since 1964: 1988 - COEX InterContinental Seoul 2000 - Marriott Sydney Harbour 2012 - Millennium Gloucester (Remind me not to stay in the same hotel as the IOC members) That's wrong Jim. The official IOC hotel for 2012 is the Hilton Park Lane. I see the Millennium Gloucester is only four stars anyway - totally unacceptable to the IOC. And in 2000, it was the Regent Hotel in Sydney (the Marriott didn't even exist as the Marriot in 2000). 1988 it was the Shilla Hotel (and I've stayed there myself - probably one of the best in the world that I've stayed at, only rivalled by Berlin's Adlon) All of which makes me doubt the rest of the ones on your list. I hope that doesn't upset your accommodation list/plans or call up another curse from you!
