Webcast of YOG Opening Ceremony

Recommended Posts

You have to consider the current temperature, in the middle of August.

I am pretty sure Rogge had a tie in Beijing 2008... and the temperature was not cooler !

beautiful!

Great Olympic Hymn... I love choirs !

So now, the flame !!!!! :)

The Beijing OC also took place in terrible heat in August, and Rogge and all the other officials wore ties. No, the lack of ties this time was obviously a reference to the youth. Crazy bunch, those IOC geezers! ;)

Sadly, i missed great part of the cultural performances because i had problems with the connection this morning. I hope we'll be able to see the ceremony again in Youtube or another place, but i think it wasnt that bad at all, much better than i expected (considering i saw the rehearsal vids), and it didnt tried to surpass SOG or WOG ceremonies, which wasnt necessary a bad thing.

It's becoming harder and harder to be innovative about the design of the cauldron. Singapore achieved it, although the lighting mechanism was a little bit copied from Beijing, with that flame crawling up in a spiral. But I really hope that London has an innovative design or maybe even an innovative lighting mechanism as well. It would be a shame if the Youth Olympics did it better than the "Senior" Olympics.

About the cauldron :

The Cauldron and Vortex Flame

SINGAPORE, 14 August - Profile of the Cauldron and the Vortex Flame for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony held at The Float@Marina Bay on Saturday.

THE CAULDRON

Sitting atop a 32-metre lighthouse tower, the Cauldron burner, which is encased in a 6-metre high glass structure, is expected to radiate heat of up to 300 degree Celsius. The Cauldron support structure can withstand radiant heat without warping or losing strength.

FLAME RIBBON

To create the effect of a ribbon of flame spiraling toward the Cauldron, 500 flame projectors hidden behind specially designed holders are used. The spiraling flame travels at a speed of 20 metres per second towards the Cauldron.

THE VORTEX FLAME

Invented by Singaporean design engineer, Dr Her-Mann Tsai of the Science Centre Singapore, the vortex flame is fire contained within a tube with an opening at the top end. A special technique creates an elongated and intense fire known as a “fire tornado” because of a spiralling effect within the flame.

Profile of DrHer-Mann Tsai:

Dr Her-Mann Tsai received his BSc and PhD in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, London. He has worked in Queen Mary College, London and DSO National Laboratories, Singapore, where he researched and developed analysis codes for aerodynamics studies. Dr Tsai was also a principal research scientist with Temasek Laboratories, National University of Singapore (NUS), where he led university-based defence-related aeronautical research. He has taught in the Engineering Faculty in NUS for over seven years. He has also taught in the Industrial Design Group of the Department of Architecture in NUS. Currently he is a fellow of the Science Centre, Singapore, as a resident inventor and teaches part-time in the Singapore Management University.

My thoughts:

many, many embarassing moments when they showed "da yoof" with black eyed peas music and corny pop teen stars.

Thumbs up for less artificial portrayals of youth like the little girl with matchboxes.

Thank God it was only one athlete per country. It was messy enough already.

The Singaporean cultural segments were fine and there were the bloody dragons we were expecting 2 years ago!

The youth olympic protocol with new entrance of the flag, oaths and stuff is a nice touch of originality to these games. Thumbs up.

OMG THE FLAME!!! Triumphal!

OK, first images I've seen of the OC. Had a good night's sleep; didn't bother to lose any sleep over this because it'll show up on Utube anyway.

From the sound of it, the dragon boat and the Lighthouse idea looks good! And of course, the lighthouse is so appropriate for Singapore...being an island nation and all that.

Also, love the idea of 1-athlete/country! Hint! Hint to the IOC and LOCOG. That is how to do it!! Actually at the Barcelona OC, they had like 3-athletes per country. Hopefully by Nanjing there were be NO MORE ATHLETES...and that would be the BEST Ceremony ever!!

I just got back from the Ceremony - it was BRILLIANT and everyone loved it - it was very hot and humid and the rain fell in the afternoon.

Most of the VIPS stayed to the end and there was an incredible amazement watching the Flame it is just unbelievable!

So far BIG THUMBS UP for Singapore

Logistally the Games are different without the sponsors and lack of international supporters - its very much a local engagement but Singapore so far is doing a Wonderful job
