Webcast of YOG Opening Ceremony

Recommended Posts

The pictures look nice. I'm sure it was a great ceremony. I believe I read somewhere that they are not playing anthems at the medal ceremonies either to diminish the emphasis on winning. So there will we some differences from the traditional games.

Just back from the ceremony. Damn! No Internet connection at all whole night in the stadium! But this is the only complaint that I had for the ceremony.

Ya, the concept of bringing in the flame from the sea is very creative, and the line up to cheer the flame with lion dance, etc, till its final destination also a brilliant idea. Imaging that they have just limited space for the Ceremony.

Parade of Flag a bit messy, and hey! Which country does not turn up for the show?

I got back home at about 1am, after having done my part to help ensure security at the ceremony. So the only way I could watch it was via my recording, and I nearly screamed in frustration when the live telecast on TV ended just when the flame was about to arrive!

I have to wait till tomorrow to see the re-telecast then.

So after all my fears after watching the rehearsals, suddenly, many things now makes much more sense to me. I heave a huge sigh of relief, but I still need to see the whole show tomorrow before I can give my full verdict!

Finally saw the entire ceremony. It was interesting. Very typical opening ceremony nothing original except for the flame that turns into a twister. Everything else was copied from previous Olympic ceremonies. I was very entertain with the parade of nation. Some of the flag bearer needs GPS. The Czech was going back and forth trying to figure where to go.... Unfortunately for Singapore the world doesn't know that the Youth Olympic games exist.

Lack of international exposure is OK

Here on the ground in Singapore it is a very exciting event

Dont think of these Games as an Olympic Games - its more of a chance for the smaller countries to embrace a major sporting event that they get the chance of hosting.

I was a bit iffy about it, but the village is great, the atmosphere is just like a normal Olympic Games without the stress, limited sponsors, limited international audience.

BIG THUMBS UP for these Games already!!!

Bugger, I was just flipping through the electronic program guide and realised that Go! in Australia was broadcasting a YOG package this morning from 11-midday - and I only realised this five minutes before the end. Not sure if they showed the ceremony, though, the bit I saw was Lee Kwan Yew with the torch on Friday, I think it was. Did any other Aussies catch it?

Seems Go! is also doing daily packages at 7.30am each morning and 3.20 each afternoon.

And, yeah, I'd also love to find out if anyone can find a link for the OC on YouTube.

Here's the lighting of the cauldron, filmed by a spectator:

Besides the design of the cauldron I found it superb how the runner ran across the reflecting pool with the torch on the final leg to the cauldron. The light effects were brilliant. I really, really hope that London or any other future Olympic host takes a note there. They shall of course not copy that but do something similar. And I suppose that the guys in Athens now eat their heart out -- they probably would have wanted to do the same, if they hadn't have to accomodate more than 10,000 athletes on the infield and therefore to drain all the water.

Additionally, here's the performance of the national anthem of Singapore, which sounded very nice in my opinion:

The video does work, but don't expect excellent quality, and the aspect ratio can irritate, since it is meant to be widescreen but is squished into 4:3 ratio here.

I have the recording of the entire event on my HDD, but it is obviously in GBs in terms of space. I wonder how I will be able to share it with you guys? Perhaps recode it to about 700mb, and distribute through Yousendit?

Thanks! I sometimes wonder what foreigners would think when Singapore's anthem is in Malay, since many would assume Singapore is an anglophone country, or even "Chinese".

Majular Singapura, meanwhile, actually means "Onward Singapore". Perhaps they could have flashed an English translation on the LCD screens alongside the Malay ones.

I am not sure if I like their use of those noisy pyrotechnics to accompany the anthem, but my hair stood on end towards the final chords. Well done, organisers, for introducing the Singapore anthem to the world in such fashion!

I went back to the floating stage today to see the effectiveness of the very innovative lighthouse and how the flame stands out in the day.

It seems to also have turned into a 'chimney' puffing very black smoke out. Sometimes it ebbed a little like the pic below, but other times it became very thick - like burning kerosene. It might have to do with the flame being enclosed inside glass and the lack of oxygen. I do hope they solve the problem because, it looks kinda pollutive, and doesn't the IOC have regulations on the type of gas being burned, and that the flame should be 'clean' ? (no smoke, just clear vapor or CO2)

I think the flames of recent times were all very clean (smokeless) despite their enormous burn size, though they often left black soot marks on the cauldron by day 4-5 of the games LOL

OK, first images I've seen of the OC. Had a good night's sleep; didn't bother to lose any sleep over this because it'll show up on Utube anyway.

From the sound of it, the dragon boat and the Lighthouse idea looks good! And of course, the lighthouse is so appropriate for Singapore...being an island nation and all that.

Also, love the idea of 1-athlete/country! Hint! Hint to the IOC and LOCOG. That is how to do it!! Actually at the Barcelona OC, they had like 3-athletes per country. Hopefully by Nanjing there were be NO MORE ATHLETES...and that would be the BEST Ceremony ever!!

Well done, Singapore! Especially the theme Phoenix Nirvana!

Hope Nanjing to prensent a more original one.

The deputy director of the Beijing 2008 openning ceremony has showed recently his wishes to direct the openning ceremony for Nanjing , his hometown especially.

That won't exactly suggest greater originality would it? :D
