Ikarus360
Ok, it's already on the news segment but they didn't posted the shortlist entries images, so ladies and gentlemen *drumroll* there you have 1) The Polar Bear 2) The Leopard 3) Brown Bear 4) A Bullfinch 5) A Snowball 6) The Sun 7) The Hare (my favorite one) 8) The Dolphin 9) Manekins (yes...manekins... o.o) 10) Father Frost (aka Santa) By the way, remember the winning design will receive touches and improvements by a team of animators and designers
LuigiVercotti
Ok rule out the snowball as that is too reminiscent of Innsbruck's Schneeman. The Hare is a match up Copper from Salt Lake City, the bear a Mischa wannabe, the leopard recalls Seoul's Hidori, the Manekins are a little similar in concept to the snowlets of Nagano and Beijing's five mascots, the dolphin is perhaps similar to Miga from Vancouver. That leaves the sun (hardly winter sports friendly) father frost (a Santa copy), the bull finch and the polar bear (which has already been sort of done thxnks to Heidi and Howdy from Calgary).... Is there an eleventh option ?
Athan
These are the possible mascots in my order of preference: 1) The Polar Bear I know it's been done before but IMO it's the best graphic design among them all. 2) A Bullfinch It's not topping my top 10 because its design has to improve a lot but I like the idea of Sochi's tropical and maritime style. 3) The Hare It's cool. I wouldn't mind it to be the mascot. It lacks... something to be perfect, though. 4) The Dolphin More scaring than friendly, IMO. Too soon after Miga, maybe, but cool because of being a tropical aquatic animal. 5) Brown Bear The most Russian of all. The main problem is that it's almost the same animal as Misha and I like variety. 6) The Leopard Its colour is not wintry even though it's wearing a scarf. Strange design like the bullfinch. 7) Father Frost It would be shocking to have him as the mascot of the Olympics. If he gets it, I suggest the Magi for the first Spanish WOGs!! 8) A Snowball It's too simple. I don't like its hair or its wings either. 9) The Sun Too simple, too, and it has nothing to do with the Winter Games. Also, it can be tropical but it lacks the water factor. 10) Manekins I don't know what they are... They look like tennis balls. Well, any of them in my Top 4 would be good mascots in my opinion. But I'm missing a matryoshka-like animal. Matryoshka dolls are very Russian and they could play an important role in terms of merchandising, as cuddly toys or even as Matryoshka dolls. Rob.
2) A Bullfinch It's not topping my top 10 because its design has to improve a lot but I like the idea of Sochi's tropical and maritime style. I assume there'll be a refining of whichever is chosen, so whilst it's not the slickest design, I think the bullfinch is different enough without being bizarre (Father Christmas?!) to work. I also like the hare.
baron-pierreIV
I like the Snow Leopard...and I can see either Oksana Baiul or Ivana (Johnny) Weir dressing up as a snow leopard. But is it even indigenous to the Crimean area? All the others are been there-done that. How about a sable? That's very Russian, winter.
mattygs
None really jump out at me as being overly appropriate, but I guess they are only ideas from the original entrant. I suppose when given to the professionals they could make them far more mascot friendly. As it stands, the Polar bear is probably the only one that could be almost ready to go as is. The dolphin really reminds me far too much of that little treehouse of horror episode of the Simpsons when they dolphins enslave the humans. In saying that, if it was reworked it could be ok, Victoria 94 pulled off a decent ocean creature mascot with Klee Wyck the Orca. The Leopard would be my favourite at the moment, but as is, it has no mascot personality at all.
Athan
And if they changed a bit the design of the brown bear and said it's a raccoon, it'd be nicer, I think. It does already have the eye mask and the colours, so it wouldn't be a radical change... I love its hat (although I'd put the whole Sochi 2014 logo on it), but I said from the very beginning I wouldn't like Sochi's mascot to be Misha 2. Lord David
Too bad it can't be Misha. I suppose that will have to wait till Moscow hosts again. It would have been a spectacular opening ceremony, where some time during the ceremony Misha appears, floating down from the sky, a nod to Misha flying away in the closing of the Moscow games in 1980. baron-pierreIV
They can't and WON'T build an Opening Ceremony on a mascot of the Soviet era Games. Russia wants to project itself as a forward-looking nation especially after the dissolution of its bigger self in the last 2 decades. Mischa is a holdover of that era. LuigiVercotti
]The snowball reminds me of the 1969 unofficial mascot Schuss. Anyone else think the same thing? If you mean Schuss the unofficial (and possibly ugliest ever) mascot from Grenoble... Then no, not really. However as I referred to earlier Schneemann from Innsbruck is a far likelier candidate insofar as they are both snowballs. Take off the Tyrolean hat and strap on some skis and the Russians might want to avoid Austrian copyright law: PS On a divergent note does anyone have either or both of these mascots in their collection? Those two and Amik seem to be as rare as hen's teeth...

Those two and Amik seem to be as rare as hen's teeth... I have seen Schuss most recently in Ingrid O'Neil's latest Olympic Auction Book with a starting bid of $125.00. Schuss is hard to find indeed. Though I can always be sure to find a Misha silver spoon set or a Misha ceramic plate to add to my mascot collection on eBay though
Ikarus360
Well, this monday, the mascots purposals for both olympic and paralympic games will be revealed on russian television. After that, there will be national messaging vote which will decide which one of them will be the winner. It looks like there will be one olympic and one paralympic mascot, like London. I forgot when was the last time people was given the chance to vote for their favorite mascot (besides the name). Although it reminds me of Sarajevo '84 (Vucko became the mascot after a national vote between him and other various mascots as well)
