The 2010 Cauldron looks like the maple leaf.

^I see cable conduits going to each leg so I guess they are making the lights permanent B) . During the games the lights were just tucked-in under the glass with extension chords going to them.

The company that built the exterior cauldron is called "Studio G3 Glass". It's based in Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver.

Their website has tons of pictures of the cauldron being fabricated at their plant as well as pictures of the cauldron being built on site:

Interesting. Thanks for that, X.

OMG! Is that all that's left? Where did you find that?

That bldg in the bkgd, is that abandoned as well or just being completed?

The text to the picture says,

"This is the cauldron that started Moscow Olympic Games back in 1980. It was removed from the Luzhniki stadium during its roof construction in 1996. Been rusting on Moskva river embankment since then.

The other day it's been taken for reconstruction as the authorities plan to re-install it in one of the alleys in Luzhniki."

Thanks, F. That caption puts it in much better perspective. Without it, I thought it "...how 'cavalier' are the Russians with ttheir Olympic heritage...and would this be an indication of how they will treat Sochi?"

So I guess the 2014 Torch Relay might start at the new site of the refurbished 1980 cauldron.

  • 2 weeks later...

I tke it the map will be mounted on those white brackets in the middle of the water? Or are those litle water spouts coming up out of the pool? (hard to see on the photo)

Any plan to put some plaque or sign there for Jack Poole, since it's called Jack Poole plaza?

I just don't know what to make of the cauldron.Sometimes it looks great then at other times it looks.....it looks....like angular crap. Nonetheless, Vancouver was spectacular. Two weeks ago (this sounds embarrassing) I watched the full opening ceremony for the FIRST TIME on You Tube.It was lasted as "Opening ceremony Complete Event". Can you believe it? Anyway, I was completely and utterly blown away by the ceremony and was very perplexed about whether or not I was watching the same thing you guys on Gamesbids watched. Now that I saw it myself, I was absolutely stunned at the beauty of the thing. The weakest part would have been the autumn segment for me but there were so many, many exhilarating moments. For sure the emergence of this huge, glittering bear from the stadium floor, the cracking of the ice and emergence of the whales! THE WHALES! The Classical ending to Sarah McLachlan's performance was so stunning. But the ultimate highlight for me, which shall go down in Olympic history as one of the most innovative and emotionally moving performances was the wheat field segment! OMG! I think the unrestrained beauty and superior vastness of the prairies and Canada were majestically captured here! How unequally stunning that was! I also have to give the prize for the best audience participation at an Olympic Opening Ceremony to the audience at Vancouver - especially during the transition segment from the wheat fields to the mountain segment. I still am quite interested in finding out how they got parts of the audience to flick the lights so that the lightening of the storm seem to flash throughout the stadium. Magnificently resplendent! I gave it an 8.5 out of 10

I've been looking at the pics of Jack Poole plaza and realized it's devoid of any real color. There's just the gray concrete, and the green grassy roof. How about installing 82 flag poles featuring the flags of the participating nations? Have 41 down one side where the angular lights are and another 41 down the opposite side.

In Canmore at the nordic centre, they still have all the flag poles and flags up from the '88 games. It adds some colour to the facility.

Wow! An actually cogent, coherent post from this source for once!!

And I do agree with the cauldron. It's impressive for the first, few seconds it rises out of the ground (as in the Opening). But it's not something that you really look longing at and then touches your soul. It's too massive and industrial-looking. A classic cauldron should be something of ineffable design and even whimsical if possible.

I'm glad that Vanoc created a cauldron that is unique. Most of the cauldrons from the past Olympic looks the same. Plus the 2010 caulron can be versatile. Just add a giant crystal star on top of the cauldron and your ready for the holiday season. It can also be use for a sci-fi show like Caprica, Stargate universe...etc all are filmed in Vancouver.

I don't know. They moved the ones previous to it: Nagano, Sydney, Salt Lake...so why can't I assume that Torino's might also have been moved? <_<

Where did they move Nagano's to? Can anyone find a picture online of its current condition? I cant seem to find one and am curious to see its condition after 12 years.

It's one of my favorites, it's near the stadium which is very nice too.
