SkiFreak Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 I wonder if David Atkins got the idea for the indoor cauldron from watching Indiana Jones 4?
baron-pierreIV Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) It's still there, of course. Where else do you think it could be. I don't know. They moved the ones previous to it: Nagano, Sydney, Salt Lake...so why can't I assume that Torino's might also have been moved? I wonder if David Atkins got the idea for the indoor cauldron from watching Indiana Jones 4? Could be...or it could be from the Vaillancourt Fountain in San Francisco also... http://articles.sfgate.com/2004-03-17/bay-area/17418905_1_embarcadero-freeway-energy-crisis-arts-commission (which is considered an eyesore in SF) Edited May 31, 2010 by baron-pierreIV
SkiFreak Posted June 13, 2010 Report Posted June 13, 2010 This page has a pic of the construction work around the cauldron: http://www.miss604.com/2010/06/olympic-cauldron-re-lit-for-canada-day.html
baron-pierreIV Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 So, do we know now who designed the cauldron? Bombardier? VANOC? DAE? a combo of 2 or 3?
nobase2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Author Report Posted June 14, 2010 DAE designed the cauldron. Last week they were testing the pool. Hopefully it will be done on time for Canada day.
SkiFreak Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 A thought came to mind, We know the flame will be re-lit on special occasions, but what about the structure itself? Will the glass legs be illuminated at night as was during the games? Will it be illuminated all the time?
cormiermax Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 ^^^ I would assume yes, it will probably be illuminated just as any other land mark statue or fountain would be illuminated.
SkiFreak Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 ^^^ I would assume yes, it will probably be illuminated just as any other land mark statue or fountain would be illuminated. The reason why I asked was when I was there looking at it from behind the chain-link fence, I noticed they had these smaller temporary spot lights tucked in under the glass at the bottom of each leg giving it that bluish illumination. I was just wondering if they'll retain this and make the lights more permanent during the renovation.
baron-pierreIV Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 A few months after the Games, I think the cauldron is starting to look a little ugly and out-of-place to me. Like it's just too out-there saying "I'm different." It has no majesty or, to me, a connection with the history of the more graceful cauldrons. It's just too massive and splayed.
nobase2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Author Report Posted June 16, 2010 Just wait when all the construction is done.
baron-pierreIV Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 /\ It's just too jagged and angular...and the 2 rows of the light posts don't help either. It just looks like bad feng-shui...no harmony whatsoever.
mr.x Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 ^ the two rows of light poles were there in the plaza long before the cauldron was built.
stir.ts Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 It's going to be hard to keep it clean under all that glass skin... I'm sure this was explained earlier, but why wasn't the pool put in from the beginning? I wish there had been more explanations about the design, inspiration etc., seems odd to be so flamboyant and complicated but with little explanation.
mr.x Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 ^ likely because they were in a huge rush to get the cauldron built for the Games.
SkiFreak Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 What became of the indoor cauldron? They should set that one up in Whistler.
mr.x Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 ^ the indoor cauldron was merely a stage prop, it wasn't built for weather. I would think its parts are sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
baron-pierreIV Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Moscow's Olympic Cauldron OMG! Is that all that's left? Where did you find that? That bldg in the bkgd, is that abandoned as well or just being completed?
nobase2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Author Report Posted June 18, 2010 Two more weeks until it's done. This is the recent picture of the cauldron.
