DannyelBrazil Posted April 9, 2011 Author Report Posted April 9, 2011 The movie is marvelous!!! I watched yesterday in 3D here in Santos. The story is a littlebit predictible and we have some Hollywood clichés (since is a movie mainly made for kids it's alright) but the filme is funny and have good jokes on it... The villain Nigel is by far one of the best villains I ever seen in an animated movie - the character is from New Zealand. The best part - It's impressive how Rio de Janeiro was perfectly rebuild in 3D... Archtecture, cars, buses, taxis, landscapes, police clothes, the sambadrome and even the Santos Dumont Airport and Rocinha favela!!! For us, Brazilian, this movie is very special for many things shown, specially the music, for foreigners, it's a good way to see and learn about Brazilians (ok, with some stereotypes - but let's face it, when Hollywood did a movie about other country without stereotypes?). At least nobody speaks Spanish nor characters named Pancho or Cuzco and no salsa or cha cha cha - a first for a Hollywood movie about Brazil. Rating 19/10

Indeed, NBC Elle de Generes show will be host LIVE from Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Rio (breathtaking venue of Canoing during Rio 2016) and the Entertainment Tonight will be also here with a studio!!! What a great, huge advertisement for the city in the US!!! And it was already confirmed that the movie Dawn, from the Twilight saga, will be also launched for the media in Rio in few months!!! In this case, the world premiere will be not here, but in LA...

I had 2 thoughts: 1. They were inconsistent with the accents: why did Jewel and Nigel (both birds who had never left Brazil have Anglo-American accents) while there was a whole hodge-podge of accents for the other characters? Am surprised Cheech Marin didn't get a voice-over role. 2. Every samba song sounds JUST LIKE the next one. (I know, I know...it's a rhythmic kind of music.) But I would be very surprised if Rio 2016 did NOT pick one of the songs from this movie for its Handover portion in London next year. And I am convinced more than ever that it will be a Carnavale presentation in London. It has to be -- the carnavale is showy and spectacular and Rio is known the world over for it. With this film, it's really amazing how far CGI films have come. But the 3-D magic wears off so easily. I normally don't pay the extra $$ for 3-D, but my friend insisted on seeing it in 3-D!! BTW, what is that neighborhood where the tranvia goes up those winding roads and where you have all those flowering trees in blossom??

Hope you had a good time there. 1 - Yeah, weird... But It was nice from the producers to put Jewel talking a little Portuguese at her very first moments (this was with lots of american accents - weird for us Brazilians, but nice). 2 - Accordint to the plot, Nigel is not Brazilian, he is a star from abroad, retired in Rio (this was not clear in the movie), but makes sense because of the blockbuster poster he is on it. Anyway, it's a movie for kids, not much to think about languages and accents... 3 - Samba is really not the same beat of music in every song. I agree it's hard to people not used to it to see the differences, like it's impossible to me to see differences in heavy metal. I know the melodies are different, but, for me, it's all the same... Maybe if you listen to samba more often you get the richness of the rhythm (well, if you want to - I don't want to do it with heavy metal, laughs) 4 - The tranvia goes to Santa Tereza neighbourhood near downtown. It's a nice ride and indeed, good food uphill (it's not a favela, but a pitoresque vintage district with 1800's and early 1900's houses). Worths the visit, specially the "Escadaria Selaron" in the bottom of the hill (google it and get surprised) Yeah, this movie worthed the 3D ticket. I'm sure in 2D things will be even more colorful, but the 3D worked very well... Specially in that scene with the motorcycle in the favela... Pretty amazing! PS: Handgliding in Rio is just like shown!!! You'll love it.

Although it's true the plot is nothing new, the wonderful landscapes were amazing! I also liked that one of the main characters was from a favela and that a scene occurred there, they're also part of Rio, like it or not... Yeah, I agree on that, it was a safe bet about script. Nothing new, same old same old... Yet a good safe bet, with very nice jokes and very well developed. About the favela's boy. I liked the message, and again, for me, the motorcycle scene is one of the best, also the Brazil vs. Argentina match part... Lovely!!!

American regular plot: First the main character a loser, with a sad life Then he/she/it win some challenges, gain some respect So the character have a big disappointment (generally caused by a mistake made by someone he/she/it loves/admire/respects) The main character should fight the toughest challenges to gain it back and always reaches the happy end! It's the same receipt ever, but, we can admit: world buys it and seems to love it... Well, the old saying is there really is only a handful of original plots: love thwarted, love conquers all, paradise lost, overcoming the challenge, pride before the fall, defying fate, finding inner strength or beauty. It can be distilled done further: Man vs. Man, Man vs. Wild, Man vs. Self. Or some combination therein. The arc of any story is conflict.

Also, Danny, so was the building where Tulio worked a real, existing bldg? Pedro is a cardinal (a kind of chicken, if I'm not wrong). The Tulio's building if fictional, because it has lots of real references together... The palmtrees comes from Bothanical garden (also the portal), the main house reminds a little the house of Lage Park (indeed the landscape) and it has a very typical fountain of Rio's plazas...
