The Maracana Cluster

Looks like it will have a "panathenaic" shape, is it supposed to fit an athetics track for 2016 Olympics? blink.gif

Nobody said nothing yet.

In my opinion, this shape will allow a similar path for the parade of nations, but not in the official IAAF size.

I think this is the idea.

They can also remove some rows of chairs and make a bigger space for the ceremonies, with the same shape, since probably they will make few refubshments between World Cup and Olympic Games.

If they remove some seats they can put a track, but Rio don't need another olympic stadium. They had the chance to do this for the panam, but they build the João Havelange. This is our olympic stadium.

Hmm, I didn't mean an official athletics path. I wasn't talkin about a permanent path too.

I was talking about something like they did for the PanAms opening, but with the new shape of the field (more athletic-like) and maybe with more space removing some rows in the lower tribunes. smile.gif

Even with that new (hopefully not final) design, I still don't think the Mario Filho Stadium should even be hosting the Olympic Ceremonies or be considered an Olympic Stadium, even with modifications to its new seating bowl. First of all, the seating bowl depicted in the new renderings does not match properly with its overall circular shape. Second, the upper tier looks too short. And third, why do the goal stands have to be a single tier?

I guess they can do something like this

By doing this

It seems perfectly possible if Maracana's lower tribunes are going to be mobile

Jim, the project shown is for the World Cup.

I'm sure some modification will be done between both events.

Indeed, they need to "invent" a place to put the the cauldron.

It's too early to assume this or that.

What I see now is: the project for the World Cup Final match seems enough to me.

Agree, Dannyel.

Sometimes people forget Maracanã is hosting FIFA WC matches in 2014 and the Ceremonies and footballing in 2016. They are different things. Of course, there must have been some talking among those people responsible for the WC and the SOG, in order to avoid waste of money and time. But, I insist, WC an SOG are different events. I am not concerned about the cauldron: they will find a way to deal with this question. But not in a hurry, it's too soon. I also believe some changes will be done in Maracanã for 2016, mainly those needed to the ceremonies. But nothing like the pics we have seen posted by people that seem have never been to the stadium. About the things that might oblige some changes for 2016 is the Parade of the Nations. But everything will be all right at the end.

I don't see any reason for being worried about the cauldron and the Parade at this time. It is too premature.

I agree with you but, it's too soon, and probably some smart idea will be used to solve the issue, but you'll be marked down after this comment by the pseudo-traditionalists here.

Yeah, because that's what determines the success of an Olympics. We get by now you don't like this idea but your hyperbole is ridiculous. This overreaction is the same as your wonderful suggestion that the London 2012 football competition should be cancelled because of the removal of Villa Park as a venue.

^^ No, Rio will just be like Montreal: a bad Summer Olympic city if athletics and ceremonies are not concentrated on the same site.

This is really not a reason to say the games will be good or bad.

Maybe because traditions, this games will be innovative. But, let's remember how many changes IOC made on the Olympic Games since Athens 1896...

Baron, who worked with Olympic ceremonies talked about the logistics advantages for the ceremonies. Rio can put even bigger ceremonies, since the city doesn't need to prepare the stadium for athletics competitions few days later.

IAAF has pointed they liked the idea of having an exclusive venue for them.

Also, Joao Havelange Stadium was considered by them as one of the best athletics stadiums in the world. The only with a training path less than 30 m far from the main one.

Or RIO-OCOG changes the ceremonies to Joao Havelange or nothing. Maracana will never receive an olympic path. smile.gif
