Six countries offer to host skating worlds

ROME (AP) - Six countries have submitted bids to replace Japan as host of this year's figure skating world championships following the earthquake and tsunami that killed an estimated 18,000 people.

International Skating Union president Ottavio Cinquanta told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the bids are from Russia (Moscow), Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia), the United States (Colorado Springs, Colorado or Lake Placid, New York), Finland (Turku), Croatia and Austria.

The Croatia offer is likely Zagreb, while Cinquanta believes Graz is Austria's offer.

Russia appears to be the leading candidate, with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin having spoken in favor of the bid Tuesday, saying "this is not a very expensive event and we are capable of taking care of all the expenses."

The ISU council will vote Wednesday or Thursday on the site and determine the dates in late April or early May. There are 11 members of the council but Cinquanta will only vote in the case of a tie.

"Russia is a big country for skating," Cinquanta said. "Russia's is a strong bid, just like the others."

Russia held the worlds in 2005 at the Luzhniki sports complex in central Moscow. But the ITAR-Tass news agency cited Russian figure skating federation president Alexander Gorshkov as saying that the most likely venue for the championships would be the Megasport arena, which is newer but far from the center.

The worlds were scheduled to begin Monday in Tokyo, but were postponed due to the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The offers were sent to the ISU's headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

>>> Just a note Skate Canada submitted Vancouver but does not expect to be awarded due to Canada already hosting the 2011 Grand Prix Finals in Quebec City and 2013 Worlds in London, Ont.

They'll either go with Torino, Helsinki or Moscow. Europe will just be so much easier for most everyone concerned.

not if your Asian, since most of the Asian skaters trains in North America.

Wherever the location, it will be a great championship in the end. Too bad that the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear crisis forced the ISU and Tokyo's hand to re-locate the event somewhere else.

certainly glad it will be happening afterall. when the october proposal was floated i was WTF!!

i believe the ISU should give Japan the next available Worlds which is 2014 but that will not be a priority at present since the focus is on rebuilding and recovery.

well then, No America to Europe is still shorter than Asia to Europe. Besides, I am sure even the Japanese skaters want to get out of Japan.

i think only asada and murakami trains in japan. asada's choreographer are actually based in moscow and toronto. some japanese men i think trains in toronto. kim yu-na now trains at the kwan owned east-west ice palace in artesia, california.

France offers 2012 figure skating worlds to Japan

PARIS – France is offering the 2012 world figure skating championships to Japan as a sign of solidarity.

The 2012 worlds are scheduled for Nice from March 26 to April 1, 2012, but the French Ice Sports Federation has asked the International Skating Union to let Japan organize them.

Japan abandoned plans to host next week's championships in Tokyo following the deadly earthquake and tsunami.

French federation president Didier Gailhaguet says giving the 2012 worlds to Japan will enable the country to have more time to prepare.

Six countries have put in bids to replace Japan as host of this year's worlds. The ISU council will vote this week on the site and determine the dates in late April or early May.

Well, 1 out of 3 ain't a bad quess. Well, when you have the ex-KGB, NKVD resources behind you...you can get anything done quickly. It'll obviously be a good workout for the Sochi team to get their butts moving.

No surprise. With the NHL and NBA seasons wrapping up in North America and everyone from Bon Jovi to Kylie Minogue touring this spring, I didn't expect them to be hosted in the US or Canada under such short notice. Will also be a good place to showcase Sochi 2014..even if it is a short turn around time.

baron: none of the 2018 bidders stepped up for different reason to host 2011 worlds. 1. france is already hosting 2012, 2. the ISU feels that be giving 2011 worlds to a new asian host will be tantamount to slapping japan and 3. germany just did not bid and between the 3 (france, korea and germany) is the most recent host of worlds amongst the 2018 bidders. remember, france is scheduled to host 2012 in nice but they may move it to montpellier

Yeay! I can go to that one.

If the 2012 Worlds stay in Nice; and then the WOGs in Sochi, I guess "Palm Trees" are the "in" thing with the next 2 years' major Figure Skating meets.

The French Federation has not confirmed if Worlds will be in Nice or Montpellier. They were trying to give way to Japan for 2012 with the hopes moving 1 year later but Skate Canada shot them down and refused especially since London, Ont. will be hosting the all important pre-Olympic Worlds. US Figure Skating meanwhile has not yet announced the host for 2013 Nationals but there are rumors that it might be in Omaha.
