ISU says Tokyo venue can still host world figure skating championships

By The Associated Press (CP)

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The International Skating Union says the figure skating world championships in Tokyo will go ahead as scheduled on March 21 after the venue escaped damaged in the earthquake Friday.

ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta said the union would continue to monitor potential logistical problems presented by airport closures and any other problems in Tokyo but had been told they could be overcome.

"The ISU received an email message from the head office of the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) informing that one of their representatives had visited Yoyogi stadium and considered it suitable to host the World Figure Skating Championships 2010/11," Cinquanta said in a statement. "The said communication from the (JSF) informs that the situation in Tokyo is settled and seems to be in-line for conducting the championships."

The arena was built 50 years ago in the Shibuya district as a venue for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

I wouldn't be astonished if the WC in Tokyo was postponed...

CONFIRMED!! The ISU World Champs in Tokyo starting next week (+ another international competition in Yokohoma slated for April) have both been POSTPONED. Didn't say cancelled but unless they can get another city to ramp up the Worlds quickly, I think they are pretty much cancelled for this year (and especially because the Japanese had STRONG teams for the men's and ladies singles). If the nuclear reactors hadn't exploded, I think they might've gone ahead with them.

ISU already looking for new host for this year's championships.

ISU Seeks New Host For Figure Skating Worlds

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland -- Accepting that Tokyo could not host the World Figure Skating Championships next week, the sport's governing body stepped up efforts Monday to find a new venue and dates for its marquee event.

USFSA reportedly offered Los Angeles as alternate venue but haven't received any response from the ISU. Reports are their looking at Turin, Switzerland or Korea as alternate venue. There are also reports that Vancouver is also being considered by Skate Canada hasn't confirmed any.

I would've thought that to be...but a source who is the former mentor of USFSA's Executive Director told me that there is "no love lost between the ISU and the USFSA." I think what the ISU is looking for...and that is revealed in a new report...is a carte blanche check to take care of everything...i.e., the LA offer might be contingent on securing a better TV rights deal to help the USFSA offset expenses it will incur in staging a last-minute global event.

They should just CANCEL this year's worlds...to mark the 50th anniversary of the cancellation of the 1961 Worlds which had been scheduled for Prague.

It seems FAR preferable for all concerned to hold worlds in a different country in April or May. Korea, Canada, U.S. -- wherever. The idea of moving them to October is absolutely terrible.

My preferences:

1.) April or May in a different country. Return future championships to Japan ASAP.

2.) Cancel. (ugh.)

3.) October (insane)

Stupid Cinquanta. He can't have his cake and eat it too. it would take AT LEAST 3 months to organize a fairly decent Worlds...and that already is OUT of the Winter season...and skaters CANNOT sustain their training sessions that long.

They're just best to forget this year and stick to next season's sked.

cities that have offered to host are as follows, lausanne, turin, malmo, moscow. USFSA have put forth not LA but Colorado Springs or Lake Placid.

cinquanta is totally clueless with regard to this. coaches are now criticizing for his indecisiveness and his inability to act fast on this issue. he's even starting to mention that some skaters have told him that they have ice show contracts and will not be able to compete if the event is held either in April or May. rumors are also circulating that he was the one who suggested to the japanese to host the event in october which is utterly stupid since the first senior grand prix event starts on october 12 for the 2011-12 calendar. what would you expect a speed skater to do in a sport that he basically destroyed.

Russia offers to host skating championships

Moscow applies to host 2011 World figure skating championship

17.03.2011, 16.26

MOSCOW, March 17 (Itar-Tass) - Russia has submitted an official appeal to the International Skating Union (ISU), offering to hold the 2011 World figure skating championship in Moscow instead of Tokyo which suffered as result of a quake, a source from the Russian Ministry for Sport and Youth politics said on Thursday.

The World figure skating championship, scheduled in Tokyo for March 21-27, was postponed because of the quake in Japan and tsunami it provoked.

Russian Sport Minister Vitaly Mutko has sent a letter to ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta, officially suggesting Moscow as a candidate to host the championship. The dates when the championship might be held were not immediately known.

Russia offers to host skating championships

Now Lake Placid and Colorado Springs are interested too as well according to an article on Universal Sports.

While ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta appears to favor having Worlds in Japan as late as October, two cities in the United States (Lake Placid and Colorado Springs), Malmo, Sweden and Moscow, Russia have expressed interest in hosting the event more immediately.

ISU will not go to Lake Placid. Place is too small and far away from New York City. Montreal is actually closer.

Colorado Springs, I dunno. Just 2 major hotels.

I bet they will just cancel these Champs.

Send them to Munich, PyeongChang or Annecy to see how fast they can coordinate an event and respond to a crisis. :)

It could also backfire in that very hasty arrangements would reveal how ill-prepared they are. Of all of them, Munich might be the only one viable to sell a good number of tix quickly since it is in a major metro area.
