Guardian
Yep. Cannot offend China, by not having Beijing host a figure skating championship nowadays. Well, the same thing could be said of Paris, too. Anyway, another figure skating season is about to start.

jiejie
Yep. Cannot offend China, by not having Beijing host a figure skating championship nowadays. Well, the same thing could be said of Paris, too. Anyway, another figure skating season is about to start. That's not quite fair nor is your insinuation the real situation. In the list of Skating Federations with "pull" in the ISU the Chinese aren't in the top 3 and probably not even in the top 5 yet. The Grand Prix Final rotates around the northern hemisphere, just happens to be Beijing this year. But there is another reality, which is, there has been a huge swing in the sponsorship money for figure skating in the last several years. Whereas a lot of the western corporate sponsors are now missing in action on figure skating, Asian corporate sponsors have stepped up. This year is especially bizarre--with the exception of Europeans, all the major 2010-2011 ISU championships this season are in Asia: GPF (Beijing), Four Continents (Taipei), World Jrs (Gangneung), and Worlds (Tokyo). The Asian public is increasingly enthusiastic about watching skating so it's a growth market. Whereas live attendance and TV viewership has fallen off tremendously and especially in North America. This started way before the current economic crisis so I think it's simplistic to blame it on that. The ISU brass in Lausanne may be a cantankerous bunch but they aren't completely stupid as to new po$$$ibilities.
baron-pierreIV
/\ Blame it on Johnette Weir. I don't why he thinks people like to see these flaming Liberaces on ice?? It's hard enough watching guys perform as 'guys' on ice with some bizarre outfits..what more having a supposedly biological male perform a dying swan? I thought that was Oksana Baiul!! Great! And I am so happy for Alissa Czisny! I am in love with her!! I find her not only to have an absolutely bewitching face (it's like the most innocent doe you will ever see) but an exquisitely elegant skater. I hope she has not peaked too soon and she can keep up her quest for ANOTHER 3 years--except those pesky Japanese ladies are TOOO persistent!! In the Juniors, in Paris, there is only ONE US couple..and in Junior Ice Dance, there are SIX, count'em 6, Russian couples out of the final 8!! There is too much fu*cking emphasis on stupid American football and basketball in the U.S. Imagine if all those huge black men were ALL ICE DANCERS!! It would be a beautiful world!! olympian
I know that. But that's not White and Davis' fault. what i meant is, they haven't been challenged by anyone. even phil hersh of the chicago trbune has pointed that out. Dreary skating making me weary What looked like another marvelous battle between two of the most esthetically pleasing and technically skilled ice dance teams in years, Tessa Virtue - Scott Moir of Canada and Meryl Davis - Charlie White of the U.S., won't happen until next season because the Olympic champion Canadians have been sidelined by Virtue's second surgery to relieve intense pain caused by compartment syndrome. So when Davis and White become the first U.S. couple to win an ice dance world title next March, they will get an asterisk.
