Ibirapuera
Christ statue vandalised Brazilian officials were Friday cleaning up graffiti on the famed Christ statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro, which was vandalised after access was cut off in the wake of devastating rains. Vandals over the past week took advantage of the rare closure of Mount Corcovado, following deadly landslides, to gain access to the Christ the Redeemer statue, spraying black graffiti up the figure's head and arms, said Bernardo Issa, head of the Tijuca National Park. On part of Rio's landmark — one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World — someone sprayed screeds about violence and unsolved crimes, and the taunting phrase "When the cat's away, the mouse will play." "The area (of damage) is very large. We didn't expect a cowardly act like this," said Issa, adding that surveillance would be stepped-up to protect the eight-decade-old statue, host to some one million tourists per year. Landslides triggered by heavy rain earlier this month killed at least 246 people, mainly in poorly constructed slums perched on the side of mountains around the city. http://news.iafrica.com/worldnews/2362160.htm
Athan
I don't know what to say... How sad this is. But is it that easy to climb up the statue? Also, it must have been really dangerous for the people who did it (and for the ones who are cleaning it up, although they should have an harness), it looks really easy to fall from up there. BTW, and excuse my ignorance , on the photo, that small thing that looks like a crown on top of the head, is it part of the statue? Or scaffolding? Athan
maybe a lightning conductor? It could be, as there is a cable that goes from there to the arm. But it's really strange!

baron-pierreIV
But in "2012," it got destroyed...as did much of the world...except Africa....so I guess 2016 and/or 2020 will indeed be staged in Africa, the last standing continent after 2012. Athensfan
This is really upsetting. I hope they can successfully clean it up. I also hope they institute better preventative measures.
Dinhu4ever
Oh, how low can some people descend. My friends were pissed at the news. Not surprising considering that the Christ is such an important place for most cariocas. And that little crown in his head is indeed a lightning conductor. It's supposed to represent the thorn crown Jesus wore. And it can lead to pictures such as this one:
DannyelBrazil
It's sad someone had done it... Christ statue deserved a better security during these closure days. It seems it was too easy to climb it with those work stairs... Unfortunatelly, these days were a little bit chaotic in Rio. (Why I'm not surprised the FDP Ibirapuera posted this news here...) Indeed, it was already cleaned. We can't say the same for some monuments in Sao Paulo.

OneTimeOnly
This is really upsetting. I hope they can successfully clean it up. I also hope they institute better preventative measures. Not as upsetting as when the Taliban blew up the Bamyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan, carved in the face of the mountain and that dated back to the sixth century, and were a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is just graffiti that can be cleaned off and on something very new/recent in world monument terms.

Feheva
Any big icon's too attractive a target for these idiot vandals: Wait a minute! You cannot compare a "NO WAR" protest on the Sydney Opera House with the act of pure vandalism in Rio. I'm sorry, but I fully agree with the person who wrote those words on the Sydney Opera House... I don't think he (she) is a idiot vandal... Tell it to idiot Ibirapuera, that is stupid enough to think this thins only happen in Rio. Man... You keep falling into his trap time after time... You're right about the idiot guy... I'm not saying the people responsable for writing those words in Sydney should be given a free pass. I think that if they were found, they should clean the opera house with their own hands. However, I wouldn't compare this to what happened in Rio. You all enjoy an aceptable level of freedom nowadays, in part, due to this kind of "vandalism". Otherwise most of us would still be living under a totalitarian monarchy... Now, what happened in Rio, although being a consequence o social issues in Brazil, is pure vandalism, since it doesn't help a greater cause at all. Rules were created to be changed. It's happened and it will continue to happen...
