gotosy
The International World Games Association has opened the bidding process for The 10th World Games in 2017. In a PowerPoint presentation the IWGA has published preliminary information for candidate host cities. The first briefing for prospective bidders is now available from a dedicated website (click here). The bidding and awarding process will be completed in two years’ time, when the contract is signed with the hosts for 2017. The IWGA has already received some expressions of interest by possible host cities, including the Polish capital Warsaw, the Hungarian capital Budapest, St. Petersburg (RUS and Louisville /Kentucky (USA). With Cali (COL) being the host city, the 2013 games will be staged on the South American continent for the first time. In 2009 the harbour city Kaohsiung (TPE) hosted the 8th edition. There The World Games 2009 attracted approximately 1.7 million people. Duisburg (GER) staged The World Games 2005 and registered 500,000 visitors to the 11-day sports event. The multi-sport event takes place every four years in the year following the Summer Olympics. It showcases 30+ non-Olympic sports, including DanceSport, Squash, Tug of War, Sumo or Karate. About 3,500 athletes from more than 100 countries fight for gold in their disciplines during The World Games. http://www.worldgames-iwga.org/vsite/vcontent/content/transnews/0,10869,1044-16941-19728-4769-306183-12500-889-layout183-18091-news-item,00.html
baron-pierreIV
That's an interesting match-upfor the 2017 World Games: 3 former Soviet bloc cities vs. one red-white-&-blue city. But I think after 2013 being So. America, they would want 2017 to go to either Budapest or St. Petersburg.

raleighnc
With Poland gearing up for Euro 2012, I'd think Wroclaw had the inside track for the bid. It does look impressive. By the way, are these bids like Olympic bids (coming through the countries' Olympic Committees) or are they straight from the organizers? baron-pierreIV
By the way, are these bids like Olympic bids (coming through the countries' Olympic Committees) or are they straight from the organizers? From the cities. The World Games is weird in that they are the games of those OTHER federations which the IOC recognizes but for lack of space or some other technical reason, cannot put their sport in the Olympic slates. So these are with the cities AND the confederatios on the World Games list (i.e., ballroom dancing, futsal, etc., etc.,)
Rafa
does Cape Town has withdrawn? Yes. Mr. Speaker, I would like it finally noted that we request today that Council supports our recommendation to withdraw our bid for the World Games in 2017. When we undertook this bid, we did so on the understanding that it would cost, in total, R360 million and with the expectation of support from the national government and national sporting bodies. New financial projections suggest that the real costs would in fact be at least R560 million and likely even more in the face of a weakening currency. There has also been no external funding from national government or any other external agency committed to this bid, leaving the City to bear the costs on its own. With this new information, we do not feel that it would serve the people of Cape Town to proceed, not least because financial modelling indicates that it would require significant rates increases to support this event. Unfortunately, those costs are beyond our reach and we would be undermining our own broader efforts at improving service delivery by committing to ever-escalating costs. By making this decision, we are convinced that we are ultimately serving our prerogative of creating the economic enabling environment in which jobs can be created and dignity enhanced. world atlas
Wroclaw: We will be ready for sure! Delegates from Wroclaw, host city of the 10th edition of The World Games 2017 in Poland, presented their goals and challenges during the IWGA press conference on Saturday. Wroclaw will stage the multisport event from August 3rd until the 17th. August 2017. Wroclaw, a city with 700.000 residents, is located on the western part of Poland. Mayor Rafal Dutkiewicz and the President of the Local Organizing Committee, Piotr Przygonsky, as well as General Manager Hanna Domagala said they were very impressed with the organization and the enthusiasm of the people during The World Games in Cali. Mayor Dutkiewiecz announced that the marketing for the 2017 Games will start right after the curtain comes down in Cali and regarding the financial and infrastructure topics they said they have achieved 50% already. He stated: “We will be ready in four years for sure.” IWGA President Ron Froehlich said that, as a city of sports, Wroclaw will deliver great games and will meet the challenge of organizing a multisport event with more than 4000 participants. For the official, the most difficult thing will be to compete with the response people have had in Cali: “Our biggest challenge will be to achieve the same atmosphere. The spectators in Colombia have been beautiful and I want to congratulate you for this. It will be very hard for us to have a similar result considering what we have seen from the people here”, Mayor Dutkiewicz emphasized. For the Mayor of Wroclaw there are three main aspects about the relevance of being the host for 2017: “After being one of the hosts of the European Soccer Championship in 2012, we want to demonstrate that we can execute another event of the same magnitude or even bigger. Second of all, big events make cities grow and you have witnessed this yourselves. Finally, there is something about the freshness of this event, the way people embrace it and the way athletes compete in it. This is all very interesting for me”, he concluded. gotosy
Floorball, Lacrosse, and Muaythai Make their Debut on the Main Stage of The World GamesThe International World Games Association (IWGA) has presented the sport programme for the 10th World Games in Wroclaw (Poland) in 2017. “Floorball (Men), Lacrosse (Women), and Muaythai will make their debut in the official competition programme”. announced Joachim Gossow, CEO of the IWGA. A total of 27 sports will be showcased at the multi-sport event from 3 August to 13 August 2017 in Wroclaw with its more than 640,000 inhabitants, capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. During the ten competition days, about 170 medal events will be on the programme. The official programme was developed in close cooperation with the IWGA Member Federations and the Wroclaw Local Organising Committee. In comparison to The World Games 2013 in Cali (Colombia), the IWGA has also made changes with regard to some disciplines. As in Kaohsiung 2009, Rock’n’Roll will be part of the Dance Sport competitions. Salsa, which featured as an invitational event in Cali 2013, will now be integrated in the official programme. The supporters of Air Sports are looking forward to the debut of “Glider Aerobatics” und “Paramotoring” on the main stage of The World Games. The following sports were already on the programme of the very first World Games in Santa Clara (USA) in 1981: Bowling, Finswimming, Gymnastics, Karate, Powerlifting, Racquetball, Roller Sports, Tug of War und Water Skiing. So the 10th edition of the multi-sport event will mark a special anniversary for these sports as well. The IWGA expects that nearly 3,500 participants from about 100 countries will fight for the medals at The World Games 2017. IWGA

gotosy
American Football, Indoor Rowing, Kickboxing and Speedway to be Showcased at The World Games 2017American Football, Indoor Rowing, Kickboxing and Speedway are the four sports on the invitational sports programme of The World Games 2017 in Wrocław, Poland. This was agreed between the Wroclaw Organizing Committee and the International World Games Association. The 10th edition of The World Games (from 3 to 13 August 2017) will be hosted by the capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, which has a population of over 640,000. In addition to the invitational sports competitions, the official sports program will showcase 27 sports. The host cities of The World Games have the right to propose invitational sports to highlight sports of particular local and/or national importance by presenting them during this multi-sport event. Speedway for example is an exceptionally popular sport in Poland. The city is also home to Sparta Wrocław and the Wrocław Panthers, two successful American Football teams. The Olympic Stadium, where Speedway competitions and American Football matches have been staged for years, will be completely refurbished for The World Games 2017 and afterwards will offer space for 15,000 spectators. Indoor Rowing also has a long tradition in the city. Since 1992 Wrocław has repeatedly hosted national and international championships in this sport. Kickboxing recently became a member of the International World Games Association after being selected as an invitational sport in 2017 to introduce itself as a sport that is attractive both for the media and the spectators.
