The amount for just the bid surpasses all costs that Sri Lanka has ever incurred to host any sporting event in the country according to analysts and estimates. Sri Lanka will be competing against Australia’s fastest growing city Gold Coast to secure the bid. An official of the National Olympic Committee who did not wish to be quoted told the media yesterday at a promotional launch that while Sri Lanka may go flat out to win the bid, the country lacked the capacity to host the 72-nation Games which is second only to the Olympics. The organising committee of the Commonwealth Games 2018 Candidate City Hambantota is preparing an "attractive" bid document under the 15 stipulated themes to be submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), it said. The model of Sri Lanka's Games City which includes an athletics stadium, an aquatic centre, a multi-sports complex, a velodrome stadium and a hockey stadium is to be unveiled on Saturday. The recently built Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota also serves as a key venue of the city plan and all other sites including the Games Village are to be constructed around the cricket stadium. CGF chief executive Mike Hooper is scheduled to visit the proposed games city at the weekend. "The key purpose of the CEO’s visit to Sri Lanka will be to understand the steps being taken by Hambantota as a Candidate City for the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and to assess the commitment and preparedness of the city towards hosting the games," the statement said. Sri Lanka's tourist development authority chief Nalaka Godahewa said Marriot and Hyatt have looked for land in Hambantota to build hotels, though no applications have yet been made to authorities. The two chains may build hotels of 200 rooms each in Hambantota which will form part of a 'sports city' if Sri Lanka wins the Commonwealth Games bid, Godahewa said. The sports city is expected to need about 4,000 rooms he said. Hambantota is a coastal city and Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa's home constituency, which has seen major investments into infrastructure including a port and airport. Alexjc Posted April 18, 2011 Report Share Posted April 18, 2011 All of a sudden the Sri Lanka bid looks good...It is clear to me that Hambantota wishes to use the CWGs as catalyst for growth in this new region, and stimulate the entire country economically. Isn't this what the Commonwealth is all about??? There is still a more likely chance of Gold Coast hosting 2018 as only to be a pair of very safe hands. DesmondChan Posted May 21, 2011 Report Share Posted May 21, 2011 The Tamil areas of Sri Lanka are in the far north - Hambantota is on the far southern coast. I think that the bid is not a collosal waste of money - it may help speed up funding for rebuilding efforts since the town was basically wiped off the map due to the 2004 tsunami and the bid - good or bad - will bring a measure of attention to the area. There is no way the CGF will award Sri Lanka the Games - even Colombo would be a stretch. I was hoping for a surprise last minute bid from Asia - maybe Singapore or even Malaysia - Kota or KL. I know there was some talk of a bid last time I was in KL - but ah well. Another CGs to attend on home soil! Singapore won't be ready before 2013. New 55,000 seated stadium has not yet been built. Lord David Posted May 21, 2011 Report Share Posted May 21, 2011 ^^^ This is for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Singapore could have easily proposed the new sports hub as a key site, with other existing venues in the city. It would have cited the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics as it's ability to host large events. Heck, a 2013 readiness of most venues is still better than Hambantota's 2016 readiness proposal. IIRC they haven't even got a proper ship to dock there yet. They've only got a few ships in there for familiarization reasons (ie to turn around inside the port without actually docking). This bid should not deserve to win. Why? Im somewhat skeptical of the bid but it does deserve to have its bid considered. Their 'sports city' looks pretty impressive IMHO. Vidanage, who won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and silver in the 69 kg category in Delhi, returned a positive drug test for methylhexaneamine at the Asian Championships in China's Anhui province last month, it has been reported. He has been provisionally suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation. The 29-year-old was among four of Sri Lanka's leading competitors who last month were unveiled by officials bidding for Hambantota to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games as part of an Athletes Commission to help provide advice during the campaign. Footage may hurt Hambantota Games bidTHE Hambantota Commonwealth Games bid team has been embarrassed by the controversially timed broadcast of a British documentary purportedly revealing footage of war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan Government. Sri Lanka has been left reeling from the international uproar after the worldwide release of the documentary titled Sri Lanka's Killing Fields, which reportedly shows horrific atrocities committed by both the government and the Tamil Tigers in the final months of the 25-year civil war in 2009. The Commonwealth Games Federation Evaluation Commission -- which includes commission head Louise Martin and Commonwealth Games chief executive Mike Hooper -- is currently in Sri Lanka for a four-day inspection after visiting the Gold Coast last week. The Channel 4 documentary, which included secretly filmed footage allegedly of hospitals being repeatedly attacked by government forces and patients, women and children slaughtered, has sparked angry demands for an independent inquiry. The United Nations has authenticated the terrible footage but the Sri Lankan Government is claiming it was falsified in an attempt to tarnish the country and is now threatening to sue the British television station. British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said he was shocked by the horrific scenes in the documentary which had convincing evidence of violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws. "The whole of the international community will expect the Sri Lankans to give a serious and full response to this evidence," he said after it was broadcast in Britain. gamesSL Posted June 30, 2011 Report Share Posted June 30, 2011 Hambantota 2018: the most compact design concept the games have ever seen ALAN LAFLEUR / Sports Features Communications TAMPA/HAMBANTOTA, Jun 28: Today the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Evaluation Commission is visiting the second of two 2018 candidate cities, Hambantota, Sri Lanka. The commission spent four days at the competitor, the Gold Coast, last week. The commission was treated with a tour of what is considered to be the most compact design concepts that have ever been developed for the Commonwealth Games. The Sri Lanka Sports Minister and Co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage, had this to say about the design process for these compact games: “We’ve listened to athletes and put functionality and convenience at the forefront of the planning and design process.” That design process has led to all but three competition venues in a single cluster. The cluster will also house the Games Village and most of the training facilities. Most athletes will not have to travel more than 1km to their respective competition or training venues. The plan sounds great for the athletes but what about the spectators of the event? How will Hambantota keep it from becoming one big traffic jam getting from event to event? The plan is to have two main boulevards, with entertainment all around, that will provide pedestrian-only access to the venues. The plan looks detailed enough that spectator traffic should be accounted for. Another great thing about the design of the Hambantota 2018’s bid is the access to the international airport. The main cluster is only 13km from the airport and will be accessible by new road and rail. The Hambantota 2018 plan is part of a bigger national journey called, ‘Taking Sri Lanka to 2020.’ Each venue will be financed and owned by the government and each come with defined legacy goals. One goal is that the Multi-Sport Complex will house a National Sports Museum. However, the goals do not just include sport. The Exhibition Centre will be used for Bollywood productions. The goal will be to have Hambantota one of the five future ‘metro cities’ for Sri Lanka and to have a mixed-zone ‘live, work, and play’ environment. Hambantota, Sri Lanka is up against the Gold Coast, Australia to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The CGF is due to choose the host city at its meeting in St Kitts and Nevis on 11 November 2011.
