It would be awesome if either Taipei or Malaysia hosts the games. Also i'm glad Thailand gave up. I think the current political situation in the country (which should have the Guiness record of having had more military coups than any other nation) also played an important factor on their resignation.

They already hosted a lot of Asian Games before, the last one which had lots of delays on the preparations.

Taipei, Malaysia interested in hosting 2019 Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines - Kaohsiung City of Chinese Taipei and the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur have shown interest in taking over the hosting of the 2019 Asian Games from Vietnam, which withdrew last month due to financial concerns.

Indonesia’s second largest city of Surabaya is the top candidate to host the 18th edition of the quadrennial games, which were moved to 2019 so it won’t coincide with the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in Japan.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) hinted that Surabaya is capable of taking over from Vietnam after being one of the satellite hosts, along with Jakarta, of the 2011 Indonesia Southeast Asian Games with Palembang as the main hub.

“Indonesia [surabaya] does have a certain advantage. But at this moment, there isn’t a specified candidate for hosting the 2019 Games,” said OCA president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, in an earlier interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Surabaya was one of the two final bidding nations for the 18th Asiad along with Hanoi, Vietnam. The capital of East Java lost to Hanoi during the OCA General Assembly in 2012. The new host city will be known during OCA’s general assembly in September in Incheon, South Korea.

Kaohsiung City previously hosted Chinese Taipei’s 2013 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tie against Australia. Malaysia, on the other hand, wants to host the Asian Games provided that OCA will help them shoulder the cost.

New Delhi, India and Hong Kong are also considering of bidding to take over the hosting rights from Vietnam.

Asian Games could be moved to 2018 to help attract replacement after Hanoi withdrawal

Hanoi's decision to pull out of hosting the 2019 Asian Games could lead to the event being staged a year earlier if that suits one of the growing number of candidates better, it has been revealed by Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President has claimed that "several cities" are interested in hosting the 18th Asian Games following the withdrawal in April of the Vietnamese capital because of economic pressures.

He also revealed that he has been given the flexibility to allow a city to host the 2018 rather than 2019 if that makes the event more attractive to them.

The Games is due to switch to a five-year gap for one edition after the 17th edition in Incheon before returning to a four-year cycle in 2019.

That decision had been taken so the Asian Games avoided clashing with other major events in that cycle, including the Winter Olympics and FIFA World Cup.

Indonesia were installed as the new favourite to host the Games in the immediate aftermath of Hanoi's withdrawal but India is increasingly emerging as a potential bidder, while Kaohsiung City in Taiwan and Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur remain interested and Chinese city Nanjing, due to host this year's Summer Youth Olympic Games, have also floated the idea of putting themselves forward.

A bid from India, who have hosted the Games twice before, including the inaugural one in New Delhi in 1951, would provide the OCA with a real alternative.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) have now thrown their support behind a potential campaign for Delhi to bid to host the Games for a third time, having also staged it in 1982, despite the lingering after-effects of the corruption scandal that tainted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the Indian capital.

"It's a good idea [the Indian Olympic Association's desire to host 2019 Asian Games]," said Jiji Thomson, director general of the SAI.

"We have the infrastructure to host such Games.

"Whenever this bid for 2019 Asian Games comes up, we will support it.

"Why should we shy away from hosting these big Games only because there was corruption scandals in 2010 Commonwealth Games?

"I am not denying that there was corruption but we should not remain stuck because of that and not host other big Games."

A successful hosting of the Asian Games could help rekindle Indian ambitions to host the Olympics and Paralympics, claimed Thomson.

No Discussion Yet on Hosting 2019 Asian Games: Indian Olympic Association Chief

Hyderabad: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President N Ramachandran categorically denied claims of Secretary General Rajeev Mehta that India would be bidding for the 2019 Asian Games following the withdrawal of original hosts Vietnam stating that matter was not discussed at all.

"The IOA has not discussed it at all, so it would not be fair for me to discuss this," IOA chief N Ramachandran said on Day 4 of the SJFI's 37th national convention here last evening.

A month ago Mehta had said in case India hosted the 2019 Asiad, the IOA will not exercise financial powers and will only organise the multi-sporting event, a remark which appeared to stem from the experience of 2010 Commonwealth Games corruption scandal.

"We want to host 2019 Asian Games after Vietnam's withdrawal. We will take a final decision in IOA General Body Meeting which will be held most likely next month (June). We are waiting for the new Government to be formed and hoping to get its approval," Mehta told PTI in an interview last month. Indonesia has expressed its willingness to step in as a replacement and a final decision on the host city will be decided on September 20 during the Incheon Asian Games.

India had bid for hosting this year's Asian Games but had lost out to Incheon, South Korea, in 2007. Ramachandran said his main mission during his tenure at the IOA is to make the association financially independent and free it from depending on the Centre for funding athletes.

"We also have to commercialise the IOA. The idea is to have enough sponsors for each national federation. Many companies are passionate about sports. We will go to them and see how much they can sponsor and tie them up. That way we are no longer dependent on the Government funds like the USAOC who do not take a single penny from the US Government. The IOA must strive to be financially independent."

However, Ramachandran believes though the task of making the IOA self-sufficient is difficult, but not beyond their means.

"All we need is good networking and go hunting for sponsors and make IOA financially independent of the Government sponsors. That money which comes in to the IOA we can give it to the national sports federations or tie them up with the sponsors."

Indian Olympic Association back in Asian Games fray

India has formally entered the fray to host the 2019 Asian Games. Rajeev Mehta, the secretary general of the IOA, wrote a letter to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah saying that the IOA was interested in hosting the meet. The move comes after the green light from the IOA president N Ramachandran, who was initially opposed to the idea of bidding for the games. “I promptly wrote the letter to the OCA president, which formally starts the process after the IOA president gave us the go ahead early this morning,” Mehta told The Indian Express.

In a letter to Mehta on Friday, Ramachandran wrote: “Since you have taken the lead and sought the opinion on behalf of IOA to bid for the Asian Games 2019, you may take all steps that are necessary, in compliance with the IOA constitution, and applicable laws, for submitting the bid in time.” This ends the public spat within the IOA that had almost stalled the process after Vietnam pulled out as hosts in April this year citing financial trouble.

While Mehta has been drumming up support within the IOA to lodge the bid, Ramachandran had expressed his reservations. But an overwhelming support from national sports federations and the state olympic bodies - almost 85 percent of the 183 members supported the idea - was reason enough for Ramachandran to change the stance.

In the letter dated June 20, Mehta wrote: “I have the pleasure to inform you that the Indian Olympic Association would officially like to submit its bid for hosting 18th Asian Games in the city of Delhi, India, as per the constitution of the Olympic council of Asia.

“The members of the IOA have approved to bid for the hosting of 2019 Asian Games. We are in dialogue with Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports for obtaining necessary approvals. We request that bid documents may be sent to us, so that IOA can submit its bid for hosting the 18th Asian Games.” OCA secretary general Randhir Singh has welcomed the move saying India has a good chance of winning the bid over the Indonesian city of Surabaya, which lost the original bid to Hanoi, also in the running again.

I don't think that Surabaya (or any Indonesian cities) will be ready to host the Games, too many problems to face (not to mention the election)... Kaohsiung would be a good idea with the World Games venues.

IOA to seek deadline extension, proposes budget below Incheon

New Delhi: Indian Olympic Association will seek an extension of deadline of 15 days from its parent Asian body for the submission of the final bid to host the 2019 Asian Games, IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said on Monday.

Mehta told PTI that he will write to the Olympic Council of Asia to give 15 days extension of deadline for the submission of the final bid documents. The OCA had set the deadline of tomorrow.

"We have submitted a detailed proposal to the sports ministry regarding the hosting of the 2019 Asian Games and it is now upto the government to decide whether the country should host the Games or not," Mehta said.

"Since, the government will need some time to evaluate our proposal, I am going to write to the OCA tomorrow to give us 15 days extension of deadline on final bid submission," he added.

Asked about the expected budget for hosting the Games, Mehta refused to give a specific amount but said that it would be less than the cost of the Incheon Asian Games to be held later this year.

"In Delhi, we have most of the competition infrastructure and the government will not need to spend much on other non-competition infrastructure. In Incheon, they had to build stadia and transport and other facilities also. So, we will not need to spend that much and our budget will be less than that of Incheon," he said.

The estimated budget of the Incheon Asian Games is USD 1.6 billion (approx Rs 9620 crores).

Sports Secretary Ajit Sharan said that the ministry has sought some more details from the IOA.

"They (IOA officials) met me and discussed the bid. But we have sought more details and clarifications from them. Only after they give those details, we will be able to decide on the bid," Sharan told PTI.

Asked about the details that the ministry was seeking, Sharan said, "They were on expenditure requirements, infrastructure and about Games Village."

On tomorrow`s deadline to submit the bid, Sharan said that "IOA was seeking an extension of the deadline".

Also it seems to me the Asiads are also growing out of proportions, just like the Olympics.

IOA's Asiad bid in jeopardy

India's chances of hosting the 2019 Asian Games was in jeopardy as the Olympic Council of Asia today refused the Indian Olympic Association's request for extension of deadline for submission of final bid documents by 15 days.

The deadline to submit the final bid ended yesterday, but with the government yet to take a decision on the issue, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had sent a letter to Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) requesting for extension of the July 1 deadline.

However, the OCA refused to extend the deadline, citing shortage of time as an evaluation team will need to assess the bidding cities before taking a decision on a venue.

The Asian body said it can consider India's bid if the country can submit the documents in a "couple of days".

"I regret to inform you that due to the extreme shortage of time, it is impossible for the OCA to extend the deadline any further. Within this two month period we need to establish the evaluation team that will visit the bidding cities and submit its report to the OCA Executive Board on 19th September," a letter from the OCA to IOA said.

"However, if you are able to still submit the guarantees within the next couple of days, OCA is willing to consider IOA's bid very positively," said the letter written by OCA Director General Husain Al Musallam to IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta.

The IOA will need to submit the OCA various guarantees from the government. It will have to get clearances from various ministries and also from the Cabinet, which are unlikely to fructify in such a short period.

India drops plans for late 2019 Asian Games bid

(Reuters) - India has dropped its plan to submit a late bid for the 2019 Asian Games after failing to meet an extended deadline, the secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association told Reuters on Monday.

Hanoi was awarded the Games in November 2012 ahead of the Indonesian city of Surabaya but the Vietnamese capital stood down as hosts in April fearing the multi-sport event would not be financially viable.

India made a late decision to bid for the Games and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) extended its July 1 deadline by 'a couple of days' for the country to submit a proposal.

IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta said the association had dropped the plan after failing to get an audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"There is no more chance of bidding for the 2019 Asian Games," Mehta said by telephone.

"We had already sought an extension from the OCA which has ended and we failed in our efforts to meet the Prime Minister.

"Honestly, the time was too short. There's no one to blame ... neither the government nor the IOA. We tried our best but it was not enough."

Other IOA officials had warned there would not be enough time to launch a formal bid with a new government having only assumed power late in May.

So who are the running candidate(s) for ASIAD 2019 ? From Indonesia, Jakarta will be the candidate, with Pak Ahok, Jakarta vice governor will go to Qatar to present the bid, since Pak Ahok is the one who will represent Jakarta to OCA, now Batavia support Jakarta to be the host, Jakarta will build a new sport complex in the northern park, and Pak Ahok also hope that the MRT project will be finished before 2018... Go Pak Ahok, we believe in you, with you as Jakarta governor, and Pak Jokowi as the President, Indonesia will be a better place :)

P.S : Now Indonesian just hope that the presidential election goes smoothly, and the looser candidate (candidate no 1 F**K YOU) could accept his defeat, and doesn't make any chaos. INDONESIA HEBAT !!!!

if jokowi wins just forget the asiad and i'd had telling this much earlier about it besides what jokowi has to offer in terms of sport ??? and if i remember prabowo had some sport promises including selecting palembang for asiad , football regeneration support ( which i afraid it could lead into a suspension from fifa ) and don't forget they using indonesia's football song "GARUDA DI DADAKU" as their main campaign song...

but anyway i'm happy to see you stand on the right side... ( as popular in social medias )

Prahara promises ? are you believe that if he win. he'll fullfill all the promises ? C'mon dude, we know who is he, what he did, so if prahara wind, there won't be any event in our country, even i doubt that we'll progress to become a develop country, we'll back to 4th world country, with all the corrupt will happen, we'll become a country for only one religion... yeah of course i love this country and i want this country to progress to be a develop country, so yeah i stand on the right side :)

and you are correct jokowi doesn't promises anything about sport, but if jokowi wins we could hope that this country will be cleaner, so what Pak Ahok hope could be come true, Pak Ahok wants that Jakarta become the host city for ASIAD 2019 :)

Haa.. You are very young :), BTW, back to sport topic, before this i against the idea for hosting a sport event in our country, because all the corruption that will be appear with all the projects, but if Ahok wants Jakarta to be the host, i believe that there is no corruption, and the asiad will only bring positive things for Jakarta, so let see, hope Ahok can bring asiad to Jakarta ASAP. Thank you

i was agree to him that indonesia's infracstructure are not enough for even a asiad i said instead of sporting events indonesia should bid for sport meetings instead such as the ioc sessions i sure we can host the sport meetings better due of our international meetings experience..

Mmh... the problem for our country is lack of infrastructure, and if we want to build the infrastructure, we'll face another monster called the corruptor, so it's like a chicken and egg case, we want to be develop country, but we don't want to build the infrastructure because we don't believe in our corrupt goverment... but lucky us, at this time we have the hope for new Indonesia. at this time we believe that we'll have a clean government, and lucky Jakarta, at this time we believe that Jakarta now has a clean governor, if we believe that he's clean enough, then we could believe that now is the time to take our beloved country to the next step, one of the way is to develop the infrastructure, and if ASIAD could fasten that process, then why we delay it ? :)

okay i see how that we can trust our new leader in jakarta but anyway i seriously doubt that jakarta today has the ability to impress the oca i mean just think about this : jakarta is running out of space and it's getting narrower there so where is the place empty for a new infrastructure in jakarta and what plan we'll do for asiad besides the oca will visit the candidate city before decide the winning host city and so how we can hide the truth from them??? that's why rather than continusly forcing jakarta for asiad i rather composing an ioc session bid for nusa dua bali...

Ok, I just read what Pak Ahok's little plan, 1st, have you heard about BMW stadium ? this one will be the most sophisticated stadium in Indonesia, it'll be built in the north Jakarta, 2nd, now Jakarta is building the MRT, Pak Ahok is hoping that with the ASIAD, the MRT project could be fasten, the accomodation ? No worries about it, Jakarta is the top destination for world class developer right now, you can google it by yourself and look for what hotels that will be built in Jakarta within next 5 years.and with Pak Jokowi becomes President, now Pak Ahok wants to take over the monoral project.... yeah the possibility to host like IOC session is bigger, but i if we have the possibility, why we don't try tp take it :), i believe in our new leader, and i believe in the next 5 years, we could be a far better country (an example how we transform to be a better thing within just 5 years is Garuda Indonesia story), so I believe as long as our leader is clean, he could revolize our people to be a beter people, to be a better country :)

i'm sorry but honestly i think building is easy but making it useful is difficult i mean do you know what happens when i googled the bmw stadium ? the results was tragic i figured out that there is some news about how people tried to reject the plan and that makes me afraid about what happens if the entire jakarta or even indonesia is doing this i talking about a nationwide chaos just like in brazil due of the world cup because every person perspective is different just like how prabowo fight back against the actual real count results and that's why before jakarta actually bids maybe for 2023 or so on they should discuss this with the parliarment the cabinet the president and especially the people they need to know or otherwise ahok will be called as an ambitious leader and trust me people don't like an ambitious leader because for some people clean wasn't enough and not everyone agree with you ( but not me i'm neutral in this one... )
