gotosy
Colombia plans bid for Youth Olympics and Pan American Games March 19 - Colombia President Alvaro Uribe announced today that his country plans to launch bids for a number of major events, including the Pan American Games and the Summer Youth Olympics, as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Uribe revealed Colombia's intentions to bid for the World Cup during the opening ceremony of the South American Games in the country's capital Medellin. "This nation aspires to be the future seat of the Pan American [Games], the seat of the Youth Olympics, the seat of the world championship of football," he said. Colombia, the second largest country in South America behind Brazil with a population of more than 45 million, won the right to host the 1986 World Cup, but then-President Belisario Betancur withdrew citing lack of funds. The 1986 event was instead hosted by Mexico and the tournament has not been held in Latin America since but will return to Brazil for 2014, two years before Rio de Janeiro becomes the first South American city to host the Olympics. Uribe has set Colombia's sights slightly lower by first aiming a bid for the Youth Olympics. http://www.insidethegames.biz/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9240:colombia-plans-bid-for-youth-olympics-and-pan-american-games-&catid=1:latest-news
Ikarus360
Well, they need to learn from Guadalajara failure in order to put a serious bid for the YOG, althoug i dont see it impossible. Colombia is doing a pretty nice job with the ongoing South American Games organization (which has been praised greatly, considering its a very low-profile event). The 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be held in Colombia. Also, the 2013 World Games (a multisport event with non-olympic sports only) will be held in Cali (which hosted the 1971 Pan Am Games)

Faster
Its normal convention to identify countries based on population not geographic area. Especially when they give the population figure.
