Olympic Book Reviews

Recommended Posts

I was hoping more for a "tell all" book about the Games. More like Furlong's "Patriot Hearts" or Mitt Romney's "Turnaround." Did Sandy Hollway (or anyone else) write a book after it was all over?

I must admit, it's been a few years since I'd read it - in fact, when I saw your mention today I made a mental note I must read it again soon. While it's sure not a "kiss and tell-all" book, I do seem to remember that it does delve a bit into the political battles about the three Oz bids (Brisbane 92, Melbourne 96 and Sydney 2000) plus deals with some of the issues - ticketing, protests, Sydney V Melbourne etc) that dominated the run-up to the games.

McGeoch's "The Bid" is probably better for a bit of the inside dirt and political battles from the 2000 bid. Again, maybe not as tough as it could have been.

Yeah, there's a great book waiting to be written there about the Sydney/Australia games journey.

Berlin Noir

By Phillip Kerr

4.5/5

Talking about the genre of totalitarian state criminal detectives, this series is one of my favourites. This book is a collection of three stories following a Berlin private detective (and ex-Kripo homicide investigator) Bernie Gunther in 1930s Berlin. The first book of the series, "The March Violets" is set during the Berlin Olympics, and twists furiously from trackside at Jesse Owens' triumphs at the Olympia Stadion to the cells of Alexanderplatz to the dressing rooms at UFA to the lakes around Wannsee. And of course, what starts off as a seemingly innocuous criminal investigation soon turns into a major intrigue reaching up to the top levels of the SS. Great fun, great old style detective action with a Nazi Berlin setting and an Olympic angle. The other two stories in this series are great as well, taking Bernie to 1938 and 1946, and two more Bernie Gunther tales are in the process of being published (and eagerly anticipated by me).

I've mentioned this series of thrillers before - they're some of my favourite detective novels of all. Anyway, just downloaded off Amazon a new title in the series, "If The Dead Rise Not" which apparently is all about the lead-up to the Berlin Olympics and features Avery Brundage as a major character (and probably one of the villains). I'm looking forward to getting into it (and will review it here when I'm done), but in the meantime, perhaps to whet some appetitites here, here's the book blurb:

Berlin, 1934. The Nazis have secured the 1936 Olympiad for the city but are facing foreign resistance. Hitler and Avery Brundage, the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee, have connived to soft-pedal Nazi anti-Semitism and persuade America to participate despite a movement to boycott the games -- with Brundage gaining government contracts worth millions in return. For Bernie Gunther, now the house detective at the world-famous Adlon Hotel, none of this matters much until a series of seemingly unconnected events propels him into this world of international corruption and dangerous double-dealing, where he is caught between warring factions of the Nazi apparatus.

VERRRRYY INTERESTING, Rol. Do you think there might be a sequel in the future, THE SAMARANCH IDENTITY (OK, original title: THE SAMMY SONATAS), about how JAS conspired with the last few remnants of the Nazis and the Illuminati in the IOC to capture the 1992 Games for Barcelona?:blink:

I ran into another book for Vancouver 2010 titled "Richmond's Olympic Journey". It's hardcover, much like "With Glowing Hearts" the official retrospective book. It highlights Richmond's involvement in the 2010 games, the Olympic Oval, and the O Zone Celebrations. Saw it at Value Village for $19.99 - thought it was a little steep, so I'll keep my eyes open for it if I ever see it for a cheaper price. If Richmond put together a book like this, anyone know if Whistler did something similar?

If The Dead Rise Not

By Phillip Kerr

4/5

Heheheheh! If Avery Brundage were alive today, I'd imagine author Phillip Kerr would be facing a MASSIVE lawsuit. As it is, he must be rolling in his grave - and any descendents of his would also surely be considering their legal options. I've mentioned the Phillip Kerr books about Nazi-era Berlin detective Bernie Gunther before - sorta Sam Spade meets the Third Reich. This, his latest, is set in Berlin 1934 with an epilogue set in Havana 1954. At the start, Bernie's been sacked from the Police force for his anti-Nazi views, and is working as a hotel detective at Berlin's Adlon. Avery Brundage is in town and the Berlin OLympics Organising Committee is doing its ruthless best to head off a US boycott of 1936. To say Brundage comes out of it with a stained reputation is a major understatement. I don't want to give too much away, but let me just say - stolen oriental antiquities, murders, the US Mafia, corrupt construction contracts for both the 1932 LA and 1936 Berlin games, the hounding of Jewish athletes from German sports clubs - well, I think you probably get the picture. The very heavy Olympic theme makes it one of my faves of the Gunther novels.

Five Ring Circus by Christopher Shaw.

Through the lens of an author who is clearly biased (and appears to have some personal anger towards the Olympic movement) the book critically examines how Vancouver got the 2010 Games and takes a look at the Olympics in general. If you can look past the emotions from the author and this a worthy read.

Secrets of the Olympic Ceremonies 2012 Edition

By Myles A. Garcia

4/5

So now we're onto edition two of the tome that every GamesBidder is all too aware of, if not already an owner – Myles Garcia's Secrets of the Olympic Ceremonies. Now, I've got a connection to confess to before reviewing this latest edition – I helped out with some of the proofreading before Myles sent this of to its final production. Reflecting on what I liked about the original book – it's personal anecdotes, it's liberal sprinkling of interesting and obscure facts and Myles' not shrinking from giving his personal views and opinions (well, what else would you expect from BP-IV?) - the good news is there's more of all that. I think my favourite parts of the original book were those where Myles could speak from a personal viewpoint – watching the Mexico 68 ceremony as a kid, participating in LA84 and being in Barcelona one fine night in '92 – and in this edition, he's added to that with a lot of great first-hand reportage on events like the flame lighting in Olympia, for example. It really helps make it all a bit more accessible and personal. I sure hope we get to see edition three and the wash-up from ceremonies in July and August in Stratford, this year!

Thanks ever so much for Review #2. Very kind again as usual.

But I must make one clarification (which might not have been clear in the premiere edition). I never personally witnessed Mexico '68 live. It was the FIRST Olympic ceremony that I had seen, thanks to the magic of television.

But thanks again, Rols. And I am about to start work on the eBook version which I hope might be available LATE April on all outlets. It will be no more than $8.00 but it will be a somewhat "bare-bones" edition because of the technical limitations of eBook formatting - no Tables, no footnotes, no more than 20K mg -- because that is the max that Kindle, Nook and iTunes allow. Thus -- and I'm revealing it here for the first time-- there won't be the abundance of 150+ photos that is seen on the printed copy; that'll be down to just about a dozen.

So the Olympo-phile has an option of the cheap eBook version for a few $; or the more lavish softcover edition for a few more $$. But as a GB regular, you will always get your 10% discount if ordered from me. And I won't be able to autograph eBook versions! :D

Going For The Gold+
by Emma Lathen
Hardback
Publisher: Simon & Schuster (1981)
Language: English
John Putnam Thatcher, senior vice-president of the Sloan Guaranty Trust, is not thinking of anything out of the ordinary -- except, perhaps, a few gold medals -- when he goes to Lake Placid to join the Sloan’s president at the Winter Olympics.
And when he watches the practice run of Yves Bisson, the new French wonder, nothing more is on his mind than the thrill of the ski jump and the crisp perfection of the weather.
But the peaceful day is shattered when the graceful skier collapses in mid-air and tumbles, skis flailing, to the ground.  Once again John Putnam Thatcher has landed in the midst of murder...
The teams demand protection against suspected terrorists.  The Sloan’s harassed branch manager reports that over a half-million dollars’ worth of counterfeit checks have surfaced.  A well-liked female athlete is accused of taking drugs while competing.  And a sinister coach, a marooned French tour group, and a sudden blizzard add to the chaos.
It takes Thatcher’s level-headed thinking and ingenious investigating to unscramble the conflicting evidence.  Then the grim truth is exposed...and what follows is a race against time more important than any Olympic trial -- a race to prevent yet another murder.

Death Spiral: Murder at the Winter Olympics+

Publisher: Borgo Press (April 1, 1989)
Language: English
ISBN: 0809542064
It’s a cold war on ice as love and defection breed murder at the Winter Olympics.  Who killed world champion skater Dima Kuznetsov, the "playboy of the Eastern world": old or new lovers, hockey right-wingers, jealous rivals, the KGB?  Will skating sleuth Lesley Grey discover the murderer before she herself is hunted down?
(panamfan's note: This novel is set during a fictious version of the 1992 Winter Olympics which are held in Squaw Valley (1960 host) instead of Albertville and is very detailed in its description of Olympic stuff - right down to the opening and closing ceremonies - one of my personal favorites.)

OLYMPIC AFFAIR: A Novel of Hitler's Siren and America's Hero+
by Terry Frei
Though not a member of the National Socialist Party, Leni Riefenstahl was the film-maker darling of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler. First a successful dancer and actress in Germany, she
became more notorious when she produced and directed Victory of Faith and Triumph of the Will, the chilling documentaries about Nazi Party congresses at Nuremberg.
Glenn Morris was an All-American farm boy from tiny Simla, Colorado, as well as a former college football star and student body president at the school now known as Colorado State
University. At the 1936 Olympics, he won the decathlon, earning him the label of “the world’s greatest athlete.” Among the American heroes at the Berlin Games, he was considered second only to Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals.
Riefenstahl and Morris: An unlikely couple? Perhaps, but in her 1987 memoirs, the German filmmaker belatedly confirmed she had an affair with the American athlete during the filming of Olympia, Riefenstahl’s documentary about the Berlin Games. In fact, she portrayed it as much more than a dalliance. Morris, who went on to Hollywood, the National Football League, and military service, spoke sparingly of the relationship, but mused late in life that he "should have stayed in Germany with Leni.”
In Olympic Affair, Terry Frei turns to historical fiction in a novel researched in much the same fashion as his widely praised works of non-fiction, including Horns, Hogs, and Nixon Coming and Third Down and a War to Go. Using deduction, imagination and narrative skill to augment documented fact (as well as debunk myths), Frei tells the story of their ill-fated affair…and beyond. For Morris, seemingly destined for lifetime celebrity and accomplishment, the relationship ultimately was toxic.

If may be so bold, I would also recommend Olympic Television: Broadcasting The Biggest Show on Earth, written by Andy Billings, James Angelini and me. The book features findings from 20 years of U.S Olympic television content analysis, an overview of Olympic television history, interviews with NBC personnel, an examination of how nationalism drives Olympic viewing, and more.

Hey thanks so much for the new book info, Oly TV Writer, and welcome to our boards! If you visited here often enough, the likes of myself and Quaker2001, among others, do engage heavily on the Olympic broadcasting aspects of whatever the upcoming Games will have. Checked out the Olympic Television website hours ago upon the plug. Looking forward to it even more now that it has interviews with key players! There has been a couple other books related to Olympic TV broadcasting, in case you aren't aware, like Television In The Olympics, a book on the global Barcelona TV coverage using multiple rights holders from around the world, and another book chronicling NBC's Olympic coverage but with Athens 2004 called Olympic Media: Inside the Biggest Show on Television that's also published by Routledge. If there's actually more, I'll bring them forward.

Hope that you'll be a part of the Olympic media/Internet coverage news around the world on these boards here starting with Pyeongchang. Or you can fill up past ones! :)

Durban, thanks for the warm welcome! Television in the Olympics is a good one. Olympic Media: Inside the Biggest Show on Television, was written by Andy Billings, who is one of the co-authors of our Olympic Television book. Selling the Five Rings has some good behind the scenes television content, largely built off of Stephen Wenn's dissertation and other research (he's done a ton). Douglas Battema's dissertation has some good information as well.

Looking forward to participating in the forum!!!

Have you heard about this novel - it manages to extend its plot to include both the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1937 Hindenburg Disaster. I'm currently reading it and it is really good!

Flight From Berlin by David John
Format: Paperback | 372 pages
Publication date: 25 Jun 2013
Publisher: Bourbon Street Books
ISBN139780062091598
August 1936: The eyes of the world are on Berlin, where Adolf Hitler is using the Olympic Games to showcase his powerful new regime. Cynical British journalist Richard Denham knows that the carefully staged spectacle masks the Nazis' ruthless brutality, and he's determined to report the truth. Sparks fly when the seasoned newspaperman meets the beautiful and rebellious American socialite Eleanor Emerson. A superb athlete whose brash behavior got her expelled from the U.S. Olympic swim team, Eleanor is now covering the games as a celebrity columnist for newspapers in the States. While Berlin welcomes the world, the Nazi capital becomes a terrifying place for Richard and Eleanor. Their chance encounter at a reception thrown by propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels leads them into the center of a treacherous game involving the Gestapo and the British Secret Intelligence Service. At stake: a mysterious dossier that threatens to destroy the leadership of the Third Reich. Drawn together by danger and passion, surrounded by enemies, Richard and Eleanor must pull off a daring plan to survive. But one wrong move could be their last. Set in America and Europe, David John's Flight from Berlin is a masterful blend of fact and fiction, drama and suspense. A riveting story of love, courage, and betrayal that culminates in a breathtaking race against the forces of evil, it will keep you spellbound until its thrilling end.

Eleanor Emerson is a fictionalized version of real-life Olympian Eleanor Holm Jarrett, who was infamously kicked off the 1936 team by Avery Brundage on the voyage over - and stayed in Berlin to cover the games as a journalist.

One of the real-life persons who appear in the novel is William Dodd who was United States Ambassador to Germany at the time - whose real ambassadorship was chronicled in the recent book "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson.
