Medal from inaugural Olympics Games Stolen in Tokyo

Recommended Posts

TOKYO: An Olympic medal from the inaugural 1896 Athens Games has been stolen from a sports museum in Tokyo, a government-backed sports agency said Monday.

German gymnast Hermann Weingartner was given the medal, minted in silver, for winning the men’s horizontal bar title. His family gifted it to Japanese gymnast Yukio Endo when he won three golden medals at the 1964 Tokyo Games.

The medal, weighing 68 grammes was kept in an unlocked glass case. There was no security camera in place.

The International Olympic Committee started giving gold medals for winners, silver medals for runners-up and bronze medals for third-place finishers from the 1908 London Games
