Mainad Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Canada hockey team regret champagne-on-ice celebration Canada's women's ice hockey team have apologised for celebrating their Olympic gold by swigging champagne and beer and smoking cigars on the ice. The revelry took place after the players had collected their medals for a 2-0 win over the United States. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is looking into the incident. "The members of Team Canada apologise if their on-ice celebrations, after fans had left the building, have offended anyone," Hockey Canada said. The statement went on: "In the excitement of the moment, the celebration left the confines of our dressing room and shouldn't have. "The team regrets that its gold medal celebration may have caused the IOC or the Canadian Olympic Committee any embarrassment. They had a few cigars and some beers and champagne and basked in the glory of this Olympic moment." About half an hour after securing the hosts' eighth gold of the Vancouver Games, Canadian team members re-entered the arena at Canada Hockey Place wearing their medals. Some lay stretched out on the ice drinking from beer cans and champagne bottles, while one player climbed on the ice-resurfacing machine and honked the horn several times. "We will look into this matter but it is not an investigation," said IOC spokesman Mark Adams. BBC ice hockey pundit Brent Pope said the scenes were nothing more than a "traditional" ice hockey celebration. "They had a few cigars and some beers and champagne and basked in the glory of this Olympic moment once their duties and responsibilities had been completed," said Pope, general manager of the Cardiff Devils team. Marie-Philip Poulin scored twice in the first period to give Canada's women the title for the third straight Olympics. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/vancouver_2010/ice_hockey/8538366.stm Is this yet another case of Jacques and the boys getting all hot and bothered over the way winning athletes choose to celebrate? Maybe they should issue an instruction guide!
baron-pierreIV Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 (edited) Strip the gold from those debauched lesbians!! and give it to those other debauched lesbians!! Edited February 26, 2010 by baron-pierreIV 1
LuigiVercotti Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Did someone say debauched lesbians?
Rob2012 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Sigh, I wonder what boxing Roo would make of this.

LuigiVercotti Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Maybe for old times sake Jacques could have asked the girls to go shoeless and raise their left fists in a black gloved salute. Worked marvellously in Mexico City as I recall... Or perhaps do a traditional shirt exchange post hooter a la football games.
Rob2012 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Not confusing Jacques with Sepp are you? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/3402519.stm

Maybe Jacques should be looking at the Lingerie Football League to get his problems with female sport sorted out. Edited February 26, 2010 by eusebius65
micheal_warren Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Its a way to cause controversy
Massi Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 One can't even celebrate at peace nowadays...
Colonel Iredale Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Is it not a violation of the Olympic Charter to smoke in Olympic venues?
LuigiVercotti Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Is it not a violation of the Olympic Charter to smoke in Olympic venues? Just checked my 1999 copy of the charter (I guess there is at least one update since then) and there is no mention of not allowing smoking. And for that matter there isn't a proscribed list of can't do's after a medal ceremony either. my guess is Jacques crew were peeved that someone else was living the good life, indulging in Cubanos and Molsons
Sir Rols Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 (edited) I wasn't really bothered about when I read about it. But it doesn't look very decorous Edited February 27, 2010 by Sir Roltel
Colonel Iredale Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Ok, my bad. Still broke provincial regulations, I understand - as the were smoking indoors when there were designated "smoking pits" outside. Also, an 18 year old Hockey player was drinking on the ice in public view in a province where the legal drinking age is 19. Not exactly role models athletes are supposed to be.

Actually I think it shows that athletes are human, and considering the stress and strain, the dedication and effort put in by every Olympian I think they deserve to have a cheroot and a drink post-gold. There are two PCs I'm not so keen on...PyeongChang and political correctness and the latter is an Olympic buzz kill (we'll see about the first). So good luck to our puffing, boozing Olympians..

I've got no time for those who expect athletes to be saints. But there's exhuberant celebration - and there's acting the yobbo. I can't judge in the Canadian girls - I've only sen pics, no footage, but you'd think they could at least have waited to hit the bars.
