Winners from Vancouver 2010

Recommended Posts

Here's my list of NOCs/countries that have to be very happy with their results from Vancouver, to the point where they have knocked out either traditional rivals or previous powerhouses...

  • USA: Great results across the board and of course knocked off their northern neighbour in the men's hockey prelim match. More medals to come without a doubt
  • Norway: After a disappointing Torino the Norwegians have come back to more than triple their gold medal haul in Vancouver from 2006.
  • Switzerland: reversed the alpine slump from Torino and have knocked back the Austrian challenge. And in Simon Ammann they have one of the greats of the OWGs.
  • China: Break out performances in several new sports for their athletes at Vancouver, and like South Korea breaking the back of Japan's previous dominance of Asian OWG medal success
  • South Korea: See above
  • Latvia: 2 silvers beats their performance from Torino and makes them the leading ex-USSR state aside from Russia
  • Great Britain: 1 gold so far beats their Torino silver
  • Australia: 2 gold and 1 silver...best ever OWG performance by Aussie, and as of today makes us more successful than Poland, Italy, Japan, Croatia, Finland and Kazakhstan, countries with nominally far more OWG heritage and winter gold medal records.

As for Germany and Canada, they can maybe go on this list if they beat Torino results as well, though Canada will still have the 'own the podium' albatross hanging round their neck.

UK Sport, the organisation responsible for distributing National Lottery funding to elite sport, set Team GB a target of winning three medals, of any colour.

"Three weeks ahead of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, UK Sport has today announced its medal target for the British team. As the nation’s high performance sports agency, UK Sport has invested almost £6 million of National Lottery and Exchequer funds across seven sports since the last Games in Turin and has set a target of three medals in Vancouver."

Will they be satisfied with one medal, because it's a gold, in light of this target?

Methinks there has been a wastage of funds in the skiing/board events. The UK has been best performed in sliding/ice sports (skeleton, bob, figure skating, short track, curling) so that's where the money should go. There might be another medal from men's curling but looks like the British will leave Vancouver with the solitary gold.

It's especially good when looking at the Lottery funding for Winter sports. 2% of the overall funding, it's a farce. The potential is there, there's been good results just a bit more funding could push it.

As the lottery though is results based we can safely assume Skeleton is one of the better funded sports in Britain.

Still, 1 gold is better than 3 silvers.
