GB Cauldron Design Competition!

OK now before Scotguy loses his nuts in a frenzy of “me! Me! ME! isms” just have a read of what I propose.

Now Baron suggested this in the premium member forum and I thought it would be a good quick competition that will not effect the current Stadium competition. The Stadium comp is very limiting as most of us are not graphic design wizards. This one is quick and easy.

I want you all to design a cauldron for either London 2012, Sochi 2014 or Rio 2016.

The cauldron has to be appropriate for the proposed Olympic venue and must be visible in and out of the stadium.

It would be nice if the cauldron fit in with the current known design of the Games – so feel free to use the logo or have your design ‘suggested’ by the logo. Except for Sochi. That bitch is ugly! Oh and for Rio we will utilise the bid logo.

All I want you to do is design a cauldron and send me a jpeg (AND ONLY A JPEG WILL BE ACCEPTED!! Please!!) to my email – nyc2012@gmail.com – put ‘cauldron comp’ in the header or something so if it ends up in my spam folder I wont delete it along with all the viagra ads.

Feel free to post them here as well and give us a brief description of your idea, concept and mode of lighting.

Be as low tech or as high tech as you want. Personally I would just slap some crap together using Paint. As I did with 'Christflame' above.

We will vote after entries are closed. You can enter multiple designs if you see fit.

Just a quick note - while I said the cauldron needs to fit in with the stadium - it does need to be IN the stadium itself. Just visible in and out of it

See I thought that too - but decided I'd go with the Havelange Stadium as it's in the Olympic Park and I dont see why you'd have the cauldron burning away at Maracanã kind of away from lots of the action. The cauldron placement in Rio may be like Vancouver - two seperate (yet the same) cauldrons??

Ah if you mean adding the cauldron to the roof or something that is cool - but you cant structurally alter the stadia. As stated up top -

'Visible' inside and out shouldn't be an issue - I dont mean it has to be 80 metres high - just like the Birds Nest and Sydney - if you walked around the stadium it was visible from some angles and afar. Or have it external to the stadium like Athens...

ok i'm innnn .. can we produce also a double or fivemultiplied cauldron .. I would give the name TNMP cauldron design to it .. hehe .. just joking .. So we have 1 week for it .. after the vonncouver games .. The timing is good. Hope that I can leave a speed delivery.

By double or five multiplied you mean similar to Vancouvers five pillar flame? If so - yes. If you mean five seperate cauldrons in the stadium - um... give it a go.

Ok, here's my London 2012 Cauldron proposal, hope you like it!

Were you going after the Doha 2006 look?

It is based on the concept of an hour-glass. The names of each Olympic Gold medalist are engraved on each strip of the cauldron. Essentially, all gold medallists holding up the flame.

The top of the cauldron will be one flame formed by several small flames around originating from each strand of the cauldron.

The cauldron also represents togetherness, and unity as it starts separated, joins at the centre and culminates in the Olympic flame.

The entire concept is to ensure a highly visible, elegant structure that does not try to be "pop".

The shape ensures that it does not compete with other London landmarks e.g. that giant wheel thing, Big Ben, the gherkin building etc.

Each strand of the cauldron links into a gas chamber below the podium level reducing complications, and ensuring reasonable access to the public.

The final torchbearer receives the Olympic flame at one end of the stadium. They run through the sea of athletes Kaklamanakis--style. Suddenly, halfway across the stadium, the torchbearer begins to ascened a perfectly clear flight of stairs, seeming to run in midair (gasp). The steps are made out of a new, incredibly-strong element discovered on Pandora in 2011; they require no support. The clear steps are also embedded with LED’s that flicker when the torchbearer runs by. The torchbearer finally reaches the largest Olympic cauldron in history and lights it, opening the Games of the XXX Olympiad.

Well, here is my proposition...for LONDON 2012

It is an antique / modern concept. When the antique greece meets London 2012.

A “classic” shape, an innovative contents.

The cauldron tower has a simple shape (L) to emphasize the flame and allow the use of lighting effects.

This tall tower is a hollow structure, covered with a translucent skin.

It can be enlightened by the inside and thus offer diverse bright atmospheres.

It could be used with numerous colour bases and in many ways as by example a huge countdown for the opening ceremony or it can beat (so visually) at the rhythm of the events.

It could also serve as a giant screen…

Lightning the cauldron…

The flame goes through the inside of the cauldron tower with a very intense light.

This blinding light symbolizes the ascent of the Olympic flame which joins the summit of the tower in an explosion of light and fireworks.

The Trumpet

Made entirely from a silver, reflective metal - much like Kapoor's recent sculpture at the Royal Academy - London's cauldron tower is like a giant trumpet. This symbolism will be reflected in the ceremonies with a fantastic Royal Fanfare fusing with more modern styles of music as hundreds of trumpeters play in unison inside the stadium, many within the crowd. As the final torchbearer comes into view the trumpeters play a fantastically loud discord, the stadium lights go off and a spotlight is focused on the athlete who will light the flame. He lights a ball of flame above his head which rises as though it's flying, trumpets still blaring, out of the stadium into the cauldron which lights. The stadium lights return and the evolving sound of the trumpets becomes harmonious, concordant and brilliant. The party atmosphere restarts.

The reflective surface of the tower means the lighting around it can be stunning and organisers have set up a series of lights which make the whole cauldron glow in a tinge of either orange, pink, green or blue during the night - the colours of London 2012. During the day the parklands and the surroundings reflect into the cauldron and visitors are seen posing in front of it to see themselves and their friends reflected in London's tower.

Since I bought myself a new PC, I haven't got Photoshop or Fireworks software anymore - which is what I used in the past in GB Comps. This entry was done instead using free software downloaded from the internet. I thought it might be worth posting the links to this software here for people who want to enter, haven't got expensive graphics software, and don't want to use MS Paint!
