2nd at best

Don't put words in my mouth, Rob.  Speak for yourself -- NOT for me.

Most of the first seeds in European groups would probably get 4/6 points from the USA in their two games. That's why I say 2nd at best.

Having said that, I think 3rd would be poor for the USA as they are not a bad team by any means. They would probably get a play-off or best second place spot if they were in a European group imho.

Thank you, Rob, for at least being civil and sometimes humoring me/us.  It does get tiring when all one hears from someone is: Madrid this! Madrid that!  Madrid and Spain are perfect!  They pay for everything!  It gets old very quickly.

We know we're not among the top 6 right now because we're late to the game and only in the last few years is there really a more rabid following in the US.  But give us a few more years.  We're raising a whole new breed of bigger (6' and over) and quicker players who are being trained well from the start.

it depends on the group

Group 1 - probably third

Group 2 - probably second, third if the group player like it should have

Group 3 - first or easily second

Group 4 - first or second

Group 5 - first or second

Group 6 - third

Group 7 - most likely second

Group 8 - again most likely second

the USA does have a good team, far better than more than half the Europeans, and probably more competitive than France, Portugal, and Italy going into Germany

I'm surprised at how low the attendence was in France. And even more surprised at Spain!!

Judging the success or otherwise of a World Cup is not just a case of looking at attendences though.

Yes, but you must remember that most of the stadiums have 40.000 seats, but in US 94 there were about 70.000 each one...

Oh, and the 1994 Tournament made, like a $25 million profit and like most international events held in the US -- WITHOUT using taxpayer and public monies.

As usual, you open your mouth for nothing, mikel.  Look at the figures above.  And the 2002 figures (even though held in 18 cities did NOT match the 1994 attendance figures.  It is estimated that maybe 2010 MIGHT...read MIGHT...surpass the 1994 figures BUT that depends on actual paid attendance then.  The overall stadia in Germany next year will NOT match the seating capacities AND Paid attendance of the 1994 WOrld Cup.

You're quite pathetic, mikel.  Do you really think I buy the arguments of some kid who comes from a second-rate power like Spain, still thinking of the old glory days of their vanished empire?  You still have a bit to learn about the world, mikel.

Makes you wonder how Germany 2006 will be like in this regard.

Someone already calculated the numbers for Germany.  Even if all  matches sold out, they would still not surpass the 1994 record.  The stadia aren't all that big.  From South Africa's early plans, 2010 -- if they sell out -- will have a chance of topping the 1994 attendance.
