Canada has actually the lead... YES, I am counting according to the number of Gold Medal (and after Silver, ...) and not the total of medal (even if this count is not favourable to the French team !).

And I think (and hope) they could keep it with Men's curling & hockey to come....

So does that make it now that Canada has now equalled it's best ever Gold count in an Olympics, summer or winter?

And also, on the Gold Standard tables (ie: most of the world), that now puts Canada on top of the table for the first time!

And yet the Vancouver2010 website still lists the USA at the top of the medals table and Germany in second, with Canada in third for most medals overall, despite Canada's current lead in gold medals.

Which is puzzling, because the Vancouver site definitely started of the games using the Gold standard, and only switched to total medals on about Day 3.

Canada poised to finish top of the podium

With two short track gold medals Friday Canada now stands a reasonable chance of tying the Winter Games record of 13 gold medals.

The two short-track golds also means Canada has tied its all-time record for Olympic gold in a Winter or Summer Games. Canada won 10 gold medals at the heavily boycotted 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Canadians are favoured to win gold in three events during the final two days of the Games: men's long-track pursuit, men's curling and men's hockey.

The three-man team of Denny Morrison, Lucas Makowsky and Mathieu Giroux set a couple of Olympic records Friday at the Richmond Oval. They skated past Norway in the semi-finals with an Olympic record time of three minutes 42.22 seconds and will race in Saturday's final against the United States, which upset the Netherlands by 0.40 seconds in the other semi-final.

Kevin Martin's rink faces Norway for gold in the Olympic final Saturday.

Canada's men's hockey team was leading Slovakia 3-2 late in Friday night's semi-final and seemed set to face the United States in Sunday's final.

Canada threw it down today. To think people were so worried about getting even one gold medal, now you have at least 10!!!

No one here in Canada was worried about getting at least one gold medal.... the question was WHO would have been the first....

Canada has done it, we will finish atop of the medal standing (by gold medals, anyway). I really can hardly believe it, but there are only three gold medals left to be awarded, two of them are between Canada and another country (Norway and the US). That means that Germany and the US cannot finish with more that 11 golds, while Canada already has 12. It was a wild dream, but hell, the Canadian team did it  !!!

So, I think most Canadians are happy and tomorrow it could be ecstasy.

I would rather have the most Olympic Champions anyways. Just like most champions was China's goal. Screw finishing 3rd.

Nah, I stopped caring about that about a week and a half ago :P.

We just won the men's Curling gold, so if we win the men's Hockey final tomorrow we will establish the all time record for most gold medals at the winter Olympics (The current record is the USSR at Innsbruck, Norway at Salt Lake and Canada at Vancouver with 13).

Methinks both Canada and the US have plenty of justification of calling these games a success medal-wise. But if one had to pick between the two then I'd lean slightly to the Canucks partly based on the quantity of gold and partly on the relative talent pool whereupon the Canadians could call upon contrasted with the US.

Perhaps someone with a passion for stats (or a more jingositic point to prove) could trawl through the amount of top ten finishes and then compare that on the size of the respective teams. That might be a more comprehensive approach to who really came 'top' in Vancouver...

Here's the way I look at it: Let's say there were only 15 events. Country A wins gold medals in five events but ZILCH in the other ten, for a total of only five medals. Country B wins 4 gold medals, 6 silver and 5 bronze, for a total of 15 medals. Which country performed the best? I say Country B.

Overall Team USA is definitely more successful. But Canada's Own The Podium program is also very successful turning in gold medals. I'm just glad that before the games media everywhere beat everyone over their heads that Canada has yet to won a home gold, now we got the most home gold in Winter Games history & tied in most golds won at any Winter Games!

Now KEEP THAT HOCKEY GOLD IN CANADA!! WE WANT TO BE #1 @ 14 GOLDS!!!

Well the hypothetical scenario is so obviously in favour of team B of course it'd get the guernsey as the more successful team. It gets far messier in the real world of the current tally with the US and Canada, or even throw into the mix Germany.

But all this does is just open pandora's box of worms on the least possible of arguments to resolve, who will 'win' the Olympics in Vancouver :)

Canada won medals in 9 sports and won gold medals across 9 sports. The USA won medals in 9 sports and won gold in 7 sports. Germany won medals in 10 sports and gold medals in 6 sports. In terms of that I could say Canada has had the most success. The USA benefited from a lot of under-performances and luck.

In a direct comparison between Canada and the USA, Canada wins, they are tied on medals won in sports, but Canada has more champions and more champions across more fields of play.

I'm a USA guy but damn, you Canadians are comin' back with a vengeance! I love my red white & blue but if the U.S. doesn't win I'm all over Canada winning. It only makes sense to me. I love my neighbor to the north, why the hatred from you guys? Make no mistake, I'm USA when we're up against Canada but otherwise I root for Canada. I've seen many posts in other hockey forums saying if Russia beat Canada (which they didn't, yea!) they'd pull for Russia over the USA. What's up with that? As of this post I think Canada has the most gold medals, Germany & USA are right there. One of us has to beat Germany! USA v. Canada men's hockey, GO USA. Nice job hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, I've enjoyed it a lot. Oh yeh, Bobsled, we're gonna win which should piss you off since you got all those training runs...lol. I hope you get silver though.

I must admit, I was surprised Vancouver won the Olympics given their questionable weather. It stinks that weather wise things didn't work out better but it all worked out in the end.

Vancouver is the most beautiful city in North America that I've seen as I've followed my Chicago Blackhawks there. I've also skied Whistler which is a very awesome place & I've skied all the best N.A. areas.

Congratulations on a being good Olympic hosts. Hats off to Canada!
