Lets ask Seniors. Mr Seniors should Ontario put money into an Olympic bid instead on helping seniors, or should the gov of Canada put money into helping Toronto in Olympic bid instead of cutting the your pension.

Why are you questioning a Toronto bid when every country realistically should have this problem. Look at Madrid for ex. No anything that has to cut something from pensions, health care, education (unless its removing the ridiculous all day kindergarten) I will not support at all. An Olympics can still be done without cutting money from these programs.

Spain is in bad shape. When your living on a fixed income the olympics are the last thing on the mind of voters who have the final say

I think you would be in the minority of 10 or so %. 90% wanted to go for 2020 with the economy the way it is. In 2015 after the Pan Ams and the deficit way lower and a booming economy the appetite will probably be there for 2024.

What makes you think that everything is going to be rosy in 2017. From now until 2017 their are going to be a boom in Seniors that I know Touch my pension over the Olympics I don't think so. London way over budget.

Its called simple math. Spending less = less deficit.

Behind that math are Seniors and Taxpapers

Yea but don't you see no will support cuts towards anything for such things as sports festivals. Its called investing money into things to host the Olympics. Sports infrastructure is badly needed in Toronto and the Olympics are the perfect excuse.

Did the 2010 Olympics cause health care to be cut? Why did the Harper government spend $1 billion on security for the g20 sumitt, I don't think that caused cuts anywhere either.

That land near the water would be perfect for any Olympic developments. I'm not sure if anything is already planned to be developed here.

There's also a lot of room left on the Portlands which hopefully is still available for the 2024 bid.

I know many who work 72 hours a week. When you work hard all your life and then you need help from the Gov but millions of dollars are going to a velodrome. With due respect in my years we don't call seniors names.

Go to university get educated and get a regular 40 hour job. If you can't it ain't the majority of the populations fault.

Actually many of my co worker have degrees and they put in more than forty hours. But lets get back to the topic. Last time I was in Toronto on a stop over for 24 hrs I saw a city that will need a lot of money for the Olympics. I have been to many cities in this world you don't want the Olympic in your backyard.

Go look earlier in the thread. Venue investment will be really minimal.

Well an Olympic Stadium would have to be constructed and that's a big chunk of the venue budget right there. Plus a new Aquatic centre.

Do you think it's feasible to have the Veledrome in Milton as part of the 2024 bid? It would definitely save a lot of money. It just wouldn't make sense to construct a new venue.

And yet many major cities across the world still pursue the Olympics. Of course there are costs involved, but they still try. You mention the socio-economic implications of hosting an Olympics (after hosting a Pan Ams).. well, how is that different from any other country? Look at South Africa and the 2010 World Cup. How many people weren't in favor of it claiming South Africa had bigger issues to worry about than "rich men playing a game"?

So why is Toronto different here? For you to call their big "dead" because you don't think they'll see it as a wise investment is an opinion. You make it sound like a statement of fact. I'm not the resident expert here on Toronto's Olympic bidding, but I'm pretty confident we haven't heard the last from them, not by a longshot.

Toronto would be an amazing stuff!!! I really wanna see them bidding for 2024, Canda focus on SOG not on WOG for the monent!!! ;)

No I don;t think a permanent veldorome will be set up. A temporary one that will cost about $30 million should be proposed.

@Quaker2001 exactly.

Can $30 million get a decent looking temp Veledrome? Any examples? I know alot of past Olympic cities dismantled their Veledrome and turned it into something else like in Montreal with it's Biosphere.

Only if they don't use Brazilian rosewood or whatever other expensive woods are used. I wonder if it could be done with Pergo or bamboo.

As a comparison, the 12,000 seat temporary basketball arena London 2012 is using is £40m (about $62m).

The temporary hockey centre in £19m (about $29m).

The permamant London velodrome is £93m (about $146m).

Velodrome is half that size so half the cost possibly. Most likely they will propose a veldrome and if costs rise too much velodrome will likely be move to Milton.

Yeah I'm thinking that the Veledrome from the Pan Am Games will be the Olympic venue. It just makes much more sense since Milton's Veledrome will be a permanent Veledrome facility after the Pan Ams. The 2nd one in North America.
