It sounds like Russia spent tons of money on their 8-minute handover segment....and it sounds like they might also be the best part of the entire evening. o_O

Olympics: Russia reveals portions of the Games' closing ceremonies

By Vancouver Sun, Canwest News Service

February 27, 2010 11:25 AM

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Games' closing ceremonies will feature giant "Zorbs" -- huge snowcone-like spheres, and Olympic champions and icons from sport and culture.

The Russian Olympic delegation revealed Saturday that the Olympic flag handover portion of the ceremonies will feature an eight-minute segment about Sochi, Russia, the site of the next Winter Games.

"For the first ever in an Olympic handover ceremony, simultaneous celebrations from two cities – Sochi and Russia’s capital, Moscow – will appear virtually onto a central feature in the stadium, allowing Russia to meet Vancouver through innovation," the Sochi delegation said in a news release.

The audience inside BC Place will be asked to hold up their own small "zorbs".

"Around the world, the crowd will appear as twinkling red, white and blue spheres, representing the Russian colours, and demonstrating Sochi 2014’s commitment to the involvement of people from all cultures and backgrounds," the news release said.

“We have the opportunity to showcase Sochi, modern Russia and our passion for the Olympic Movement to the world,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko, president and CEO of Sochi 2014. “We want to be truly innovative and inspire the world.”

The audience members will get Sochi 2014 Zorbs - flashing snow globes (red, white, blue) colours of Russia's flag - to hold up during the handover ceremony. More news soon.

The handover will include live shots from Sochi and Moscow. These shots will likely be on the centre curtains or "a central feature in the stadium" according to Sochi 2014.

Well, having live pictures from Sochi and Moscow for the handover isn't that innovative, dear Sochi organising committee -- it was already done in 1976 when another Canadian city (Montreal) handed over to another Russian city (Moscow).

But those "zorbs" seem to be quite a nice idea.

Chile's athletes, coaches to skip Olympics closing ceremony

The Associated Press

Saturday, February 27, 2010; 10:47 AM

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Chile's athletes and coaches are planning to skip the Olympic closing ceremonies following a magnitude-8.8 earthquake that has devastated their country.

Team spokesman Luis Alberto Santa Cruz said Saturday morning that the athletes and coaches are trying to get home from Vancouver as soon as possible because of the quake.

Chile has three Alpine skiers representing the country at the Vancouver Games. Noelle Barahona, Maui Gayme and Jorge Mandru are all finished competing, so they won't miss any remaining events.

Santa Cruz says that some of the coaches and athletes have been able to reach family and so far, they have found out that their loved ones are fine. Some are still trying to make contact.

After the opening ceremony, also Vancouver's closing ceremony is overshadowed by tragedy... :(

I was about to say that  . Although not much people remember, the handover to Moscow 1980 in Montreal Closing was a video showing live pictures of the city, while a chorus on Red Square was singing ''Kalinka'' (and a salt candle was brought inside the stadium or something). Anyway the handover sounds pretty amazing, cant wait to see it.

The rehearsal for the closing ceremonies should have started now, so we'll probably get some pics of it. Anyway, according to Twitter, Avril Lavigne and Alanis are going to perform on the closing.

As for the OC, I'm gonna ask for the length the closing ceremony is planned to have. Does anybody know?

Closing ceremony, oh no it cant end , I will get without symptoms from the branding and intro music.

So, it's Montreal 1976 Closing all over again. The hand-over portion in 1976 featured a live satellite sequence of traditional folk dancers at Red Square; so this is nothing new. It was quite impressive at that time.

"Zorbs"...is that short for Zorba? But it sounds very Woody Allen-ish.

Also, I wonder if they will stage a streaker again this time? You know..humour being the theme of the Closing??
