Citius Altius Fortius
I think we had seen a very good opening ceremony in Vancouver, but I voted "good" in this poll, since I wanted to do "justice" toward Salt Lake City and Lillehammer, which are in my point of view masterpieces - and I like Albertville - the Opening Ceremony was so extravagant (very surprising) - I will never forget the snow globe ladies and how the different sports were presented... Vancouver had really wonderful moments - my favourite part was the "voyage" from the polar ice sea with its northern lights, the ice floes, and whales (these whales really rocked) over the woods with its giant trees, fields of wheat to the rockies with its sport events... (the riverdance, fiddling segment was for my taste too long, but that is just I am not really into that)
4seasonscentre
Yeah, I wish it wasn't a five point scale because I would have voted Very good but not Excellent, though sometimes these things take a while to settle in. Things I liked: - the countdown - the video sequence at the start and the snowboarder coming into the stadium - the inclusion of aboriginal content, but not to excess - the VIP box (looked like ice) - Wayne Gretzky (might not have been my choice, but a good choice none the less) - the other torch bearers (chose good people, didn't concede to political correctness) - the quality of the singing of the Hymn by Meesha Broogergosman (sp?) - the proclamation of the opening was done properly - oath taking was good. The judge even told Hayle Wickheiser "Well done!" - The whales! - The whole spirit to the north routine - The ballet/ totem pole scene, and the wheatfields - The mountain scene - the poem - choice of people holding the olympic flag Things that were OK: - background music (a little too grammy nightish) - the motorcade to the external cauldron. Seemed kinda chaotic, but everyone was well behaved! - the placards and their holders' outfits Things I didn't like - The 4th cauldron arm not working! - the olympic flag getting tangled - The jazzed up Canadian Anthem! - the olympic hymn in English/French, should have been in original Greek - confusion in the VIP box - KD Lang. I wish there was something else going on during the song. The flame song was also not excellent - lack of a catchy theme song like "Can you feel it?" "heroes live forever" "dare to dream" "the power of the dream" "inspiration lights the fire within" - no significant depiction of the olympic rings (in fact, no "instant hard-on" moment at all) - The tap dancing - the fact that they chose 4 final torchbearers - not enough fireworks, even if they are just for the TV audience
Olympian2004
I voted for "Very good". My personal ranking of the Olympic opening ceremonies I've either witnessed "live" or in TV/YouTube replays in their complete form: EXCELLENT: 1.) Sydney 2.) Lillehammer VERY GOOD: 3.) Beijing 4.) Vancouver 5.) Barcelona 6.) Munich (I know that those classical ceremonies are hard to be compared with the modern ones, but I rank the ceremonies also by the emotional effect they took on me personally) 7.) Salt Lake City 8.) Athens GOOD: 9.) Los Angeles 10.) Nagano 11.) Calgary MEDIOCRE: 12.) Torino 13.) Atlanta BORING OR BAD: 14.) Montreal 15.) Seoul
Citius Altius Fortius
VERY GOOD: 6.) Munich (I know that those classical ceremonies are hard to be compared with the modern ones, but I rank the ceremonies also by the emotional effect they took on me personally) Yeah - I agree you can't compare such classical with the modern ceremonies anymore - in my point of view mark the opening ceremonies of Moscow and Los Angeles the "break" between classical and modern ones... I didn't watch the Eröffnungsfeier in 1972, but I watched it on BR (Bavarian TV), when it was shown again right before the opening of the actual Olympic Games and I agree Fabian the Eröffnungsfeier of Munich 1972 touched me very deep - especially due its simpleness and the wonderful idea not to use marching music anymore at the nations entry - and I like the idea of that old english summer tune to welcome the athletes from around the world - but I think that is totally normal the Greeks are touched by Athens, the Chinese are touched by Bejing, the US-citizens are touched by Atlanta, the Canadians are touched by Vancouver and the British will be touched by London... OneTimeOnly
SUMMER: Masterpiece: Beijing (all time favorite) Excellent: Athens (my second favorite after Beijing) Embarrassment: Atlanta (hated it, especially when the redneck pick up trucks came out in a crass display of commercialism inserted into the ceremony, advertising, who was it? Chevrolet? WINTER: I can hardly remember much of the content of Winter Ceremonies, but I'll never forget Vancouver.
Ikarus360
I voted ''good'' because i wanted to give a more balanced opinion of this show. The ceremony had its highs and flops, but overall it was very pleasant and spectacular, worth the wait (i already posted somewhat of a review on a thread yesterday), the best WOG ceremony i've seen since SLC (i said this a lot of times before i know, but i always disliked Torino ceremonies). I just voted good so i could put it in par with Salt Lake and Albertville with my faves (I share my toughts with CAF about Albertville. Its one of my favorite ceremonies of all time because of how dynamic and innovative was back then, altough freaky XD) My top WOG Ceremonies: 1) Salt Lake City 2) Lillehammer 3) Albertville 4) Vancouver 5) Torino 6) Calgary 7) Nagano 8) Sarajevo Not related with the thread, but my top SOG Ceremonies: 1) Barcelona 2) Beijing 3) Athens 4) Sydney 5) Atlanta 6) Los Angeles 7) Moscow 8) Seoul
baron-pierreIV
OBVIOUSLY, I'm going to have to chime in: Top of the Class: W: - as previously stated, Salt Lake 2002 - sheer artistry S: - well, it'll have to be Beijing 2008. (You can't fight $98 million (for the Opening) and where a billion people threw everything at it but the kitchen sink.) Runners up: S: am torn between Sydney or Barcelona. Sydney was spectacular and very rich; but Barcelona was extremely INNOVATIVE and lyrical for its time (& of course I saw it in person). W: Lillehammer Bronze: W: Vancouver S: Atlanta (of course, I was part of it!!) non-Olympic Ceremonies: of course, special mention must go to Doha amd Melbourne 2006 for their being exceptional, non-Olympic ceremonies...but almost on a scale competitive with Olympic ceremonies. DannyelBrazil
Since i'm 26 years old, my list is: 1 - Athens 2 - Beijing 3 - Sydney 4 - Vancouver 5 - Barcelona< Atlanta (tied) 6 - Seoul < Torino (tied) (as I told you guy before, disconsider my grades on winter, since I'm not a huge fan of winter games and not a great guy to qualify OCs of them)
