thatsnotmypuppy Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 So I arrived to a wintery blast late yesterday afternoon. After catching the train to Vancouver City Centre I got horribly lost in a mall and eventually had a security guard escort me through a London Drugs store to the street outside. Yep - I had to go through a store to get outside. Anyhow I got to the HI by 5:30 ish and just made it to Hamilton Street to get my CoSport tickets. They are all bright and shiny They didn't have any spectator guides at all (neither does anywhere else apparently) so I had to cough up $18CA for the official programme thingy so I would have some hard copies of the maps. I had a couple of hot dogs from dougiedogs on Granville for tea - a Tokyo Dog that had wasabi, bento shavings and okonomiyaki mayo (nice!) and a bacon and cheese chilli dog. Needless to say I was shitting within 30 minutes. Yum though! I discovered that my bedroom (and bed head) shares a wall with the kitchen at this hostel. Thus I was up at 7am after being woken by the arse end of a pub crawl at 3am. Yay. Today thus far I have wandered around near Robson Square, popped down near the MPC/IPC, bought a few dvds at HMV (crikey DVDs are pricey in Canada, eh?) and had some very traditional Canadian... Maccas. I was going to check out the art gallery but really cant be bothered. It is wet and cold today but not too bad. I hope to catch up with Jeremie, Petrus and Jawn at some point over the next few days. 1

Faster Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Oh don't talk, you're from England for crying out load. You people are born with umbrellas in your hands.
thatsnotmypuppy Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Well the adventures continue. I headed back to Robson Square and on the way discovered the Speedo shop has all their Van 2010 merchandise on sale for 40% off the stickered price. $16 t-shirts anyone?? I also checked out a few other shops (Chapters and Sears) and decided it is cheaper to buy stuff at home. I headed down to David Lam park which is hosting the Yaletown Live City site to attend an Aussie team meet and greet. It was meant to start at 4pm but unfortunately the site didn't open until right about 5pm - thus I have no idea if the meet and greet happened or what. Bizarre. Nonetheless I checked out the sponsor pavilions - Samsung basically has a few computer games and a bunch of mobiles, Acer has some games and a few laptops you can dick around on, Panasonic has a 15 minute 3D ad disguised as an Olympic 'experience' and unfortunately for me the Coca Cola Happiness House had a power grid failure so while I did snag a glow in the dark Coke bottle I did not get to see the actual display apart from the uniforms and torches they had in the front room. Oh and the smacked out happy attendants who told me (in secret) that Coke actually runs the world. Um, duh! Oh and the Vancouver 'Green House' was not open. And may not be until Feb 18. They are being extra green by not being open and thus not using any electricity. Anyhow they had food stands. The Indian stall sold butter chicken and rice but didn't have any cutlery as it hadn't been delivered yet. The Canada stall sold Bison Sandwiches but had no food as it hadn't been delivered yet. It surprises me no end that Coke can get in thousands if not millions of bottles of their rubbish and yet you couldn't get anything but their products. A new marketing angle perhaps?? Coke and only Coke at the Games from now on? I was going to hang around to see Michael Buble run with the flame and maybe - just maybe - hit him in the head with a glow in the dark sponsored freebie - but alas it was boring and there were more volunteers than spectators. However there was a monster line outside. People - do NOT bring bags and you get in straight away!! Learn dammit!! For dinner I considered Japadog (and will get there) but instead had a 'gyros' from a hole in the wall stand on Granville. Mmm garlic. Anyhow today I should catch up with Jawn and Petrus (who is scarily in the same hostel as me). Duhn duhn duhhhhhhhhhhh! I also need to buy some shoes as the only pair I bought are so waterlogged I am getting hypothermia just looking at them!! After that there is some kind of opening fiesta thingy at a big dome downtown? Maybe someone can tell me what is on? Edited February 12, 2010 by thatsnotmypuppy 1
Faster Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Sh!t, i don't have any good shoes to bring. Dammit.
Rafa Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Cape Town is rainy during the WC. Does Vancouver have any tips on how to "cover" public areas or how to ensure that there is still some atmosphere or vibe?
thatsnotmypuppy Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Vancouver has opted for the "ha ha you're wet" mode of tourist interaction Faster - oh yes - sturdy waterproofed (as much as possible) shoes. Oh and it was a pleasure meeting you Jawn!! My mate wants a ceramic totem pole thingy as a gift - Vancouverites - where would one find such tacky kitsch??
Faster Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Crap.Dammit, I will have to look for something. G-d damn Vancouver weather.
thatsnotmypuppy Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 It has been dry most of today - and the forecast looks the same for the next few days.
