Do you know that there is a countryside in Schleswig-Holstein (that is the German state between North and Baltic Sea with a border to Denmark), which is called "Angeln"? Yes,apparently it is connected with the Angles who came to Britain and gave their name to our country (England derives from Angla-land). There is a region of eastern England which is still called East Anglia. Olympian2004 Posted February 20, 2010 Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 I'm pretty satisfied about it -- although it's disappointing how our male biathletes perform. But somehow, after years of extremely strong German results in that sport, I expected something like that to happen. Even the first rank on the medal table is still possible, if all other gold candidates deliver (especially the bobsledders, Maria Riesch in the slalom and the female biathletes) -- something I wouldn't have expected before the Games. But in the end, I rather expect Germany to be second or third. And that's a result I'd be very satisfied about as well, especially regarding the strong opposition by the USA and increasingly also by Norway and Canada. And I also think that if Germany should finish the Games as one of the three best winter sports nations, it would be another strong argument for the 2018 Games being awarded to Munich. However South Korea have made the cross over now from short to long track speed skating success and have had some other reasonable performances, and France has a good start too with the potential for more alpine success. I'd expect Germany to finish top 4 with the likes of the US, Canada and Norway to round out the other ranks, but don't expect a No.1 finish (methinks the US are probably in the box seat for that honour). Jaded Neuner shuns third gold bid AFP WHISTLER, Canada — Germany's biathlon pin-up Magdalena Neuner has taken herself out of the running for a third gold medal and given up her place for Tuesday's Olympic 4x6km biathlon relay. The 23-year-old claimed her second gold of the Games when she won the 12.5km mass start on Sunday but announced she would pull out of the team relay to give others a chance to medal. "That was my last run," she said, having also won silver in the sprint and gold in the pursuit. "I am finished with the Olympic Games. "It was my decision. But I think that the other girls are all on form and want to secure a medal," she added after admitting being jaded by the pressure of . German team attache Stefan Sschwarzberg said she had achieved more than she thought impossible. "She has reached everything, and maybe even a bit more, than she ever dreamt of at these Olympic Games. So she wanted to give her teammates a chance to win their own medals," he said. In Neuner's absence, Germany have plenty of strength in depth to choose from in mass start bronze medallist Simone Hauswald, triple Olympic gold medallist Kati Wilhelm and double gold-medallist from Salt Lake City, Andrea Henkel. Neuner's place in the German quartet will most likely to go to Martina Beck, formerly Glagow, who won three silver medals in Turin four years ago. Even without Neuner, Germany, who won the relay silver in Turin behind the Russian quartet four years ago, are more than capable of winning gold. In the relay, each member of a four-person team skis three legs and stops twice at the shooting range with each miss meaning a 150-metre penalty lap. Russia's Olga Zaitseva who won a silver in the 12.5km mass start said she has been surprised by the lack of form of the world's best biathletes here including Sweden's Helena Jonsson, who has been replaced by Neuner as the world leader. "I am not going to predict anything about the relay, anything can happen - the field is wide open," said the Russian. "These game are unpredictable, the Russian team will contuinue to work hard and perhaps do better next time. "It was surprising to see none of the athletes who promised before these Games have delivered much, including the Russians and Scandinavians, except Magdalena, anything can happen here as we have seen seen." Also, in another interview I saw she had some very harsh comments about the doping control officials - how brusque they've been in Vancouver (or at least at biathlon events). And congratulations on the latest cross country Gold for Germany. This puts you even at the top for Gold with the USA now, right? But I don't think you got silver. I understand that was SVERIGE! Silver in Ski Jumping Team - Austria over the top Silver in Cross Country Sprint for Tim Tscharnke and Axel Teichmann Also, in another interview I saw she had some very harsh comments about the doping control officials - how brusque they've been in Vancouver (or at least at biathlon events). yeah - I was astonished myself when I saw that interview - she was nerved by the control officials, who followed her everywhere after she crossed the finish line (and not followed her everywhere, but a "little bit more")...
