baron-pierreIV
Here's also another recap on WUG stuff... "World University Games Montreal has officially declined to bid for the 2011 World University games. Canada is putting forward Edmonton as its 2011 Candidate. Shenzen, China announced in January of this year that it is a very serious candidate for the games. Taipei has previously made brief mentions of interest, most recently at the 2005 Universiade in August. Early on, Germany talked of putting forward Leipzig as a candidate and has talked to all of the cities that were candidates for the 2012 Olympic games, and Munich. Utrecht, Holland has been briefly mentioned, but these suggestions seem to have developed into serious consideration. Bristol, England has been mentioned in passing and Belfast, Northern Ireland has put forth the idea of going for the 2011 or 2013 Universiade. 2007 Host: Bangkok, Thailand Winter World University Games Erzurum Turkey, which lost to Harbin for the 2009 University Games, has decided to run for the 2011 Winter Universiade. Guardian
Are these Games still interesting? Hardly any coverage and some sports are lacking serious competitors... Not really. The only media coverage one would really get for these Games is by the Internet. And, only by those who are really interested in them.
splinterhead
I caught a few hockey games and skiing events on Fox College Sports, in the US, from Innsbruck sometime last year.
RAP
The USA should seriously consider this as well. LA would be a suitable place for a Summer Universiade, with many of the events at the Home Depot Center. :wwww: The USA has only hosted one Summer and one Winter Universiade each. With Lake Placid 1972 (winter) and Buffalo 1993 (summer) so far, the country has potential to host more of these Games. Honestly, I doubt that any city in the USA is interested in the World University Games oe even the Pan AM Games No TV exposure of these games whatsovever. A little more interst in the 1970s where there was at least some TV coverage.
wamel042
I really think they should cancel these Games and replace them with European Games..... I suggest Amsterdam is a perfect candidate for the first European Games, perhaps in 2013? Or otherwise Athens can use the excisting facilities once more in 2009..... Quintana
You are really doing some Amsterdam promotion are you Too bad the people of Amsterdam aren't exactly sportlovers compared to other Dutch cities... Utrecht might be suited for the Universiade, depending on what the demands for the venues are. It is home to the biggest University in the country which also happens to be one I'm currently studying
Pui from HK
Amsterdam has bid for 1992 Olympic but they didn't get much support from the citizens. But if Amsterdam bid again I'll sure support it... coz this city is so lovely!
Quintana
Amsterdam has bid for 1992 Olympic but they didn't get much support from the citizens. But if Amsterdam bid again I'll sure support it... coz this city is so lovely! The Dutch in general and the people of Amsterdam in particular are real nimby's. It is almost impossible to organise something in that place without problems. For instance, they had a lot of problems organising the Amsterdam Marathon a few years ago. Shop owners downtown were complaining about their accessibility. In the end they had to build several temporary bridges over the roads. As a result the biggest part of the marathon now takes place outside the city. Not a real problem because the people of Amsterdam don't seem to be interested in it anyway. There are many more examples where that came from but I won't bore you with them. It is too bad, Amsterdam is the only Dutch city that might have a very slim chance to ever host the olympics again. When the attitude of the people over there isn't going to change that is never going to happen though.
wamel042
Too bad.....but you're right about Amsterdam. Unfortunately it is the only dutch city, with international "fame" so changes of Amsterdam organising any major sport events in the near future are very slim..... Guardian
Now that Torino has finished its "main event" for this year and it is about to host the Paralympic Winter Games, the city has next year's Winter Universiade to contend with. Of course, how the Olympic venues will be used is still anyone's guess.

Plus, that prevented Calgary from bidding the 2011 Winter Universiade in the process. Got to love our FISU committee. So, Erzurum is going to try again, huh? This time, it is going to against a Slovenian bid for it.
