The USA should seriously consider this as well. LA would be a suitable place for a Summer Universiade, with many of the events at the Home Depot Center. :wwww:

Canada definetely needs to look at potential bids for Universiades....so far, we have only concentrated on the Commonwealth, Olympic, and Pan Am Games.

Considering that Canada has only Edmonton 1983 (summer) in its resume, it is about time that the country should give its university athletes a chance to compete at home with this Games.

The USA has only hosted one Summer and one Winter Universiade each. With Lake Placid 1972 (winter) and Buffalo 1993 (summer) so far, the country has potential to host more of these Games.

Oh, one more thing to mention here: San Antonio is thinking about bidding for the 2009 Summer Universiade, after losing to Rio for the 2007 Pan American Games.

The only countries who care about these things are those who want to make a mark for themselves in the world. China was literally hugging itself when it hosted the 2001 Universiade while more developed countries could care less about them.

That's in dispute, to some "developed" countries. Italy hosted this year's Winter Universiade and will do so again in just 4 years from now in Torino. San Antonio is thinking of pursuing a bid for the 2009 Summer Universiade, but it is unclear at this time.

But, you're right on one point that it gets the thumbs-down for media newsworthy overall. I had to rely completely on the Internet here for news from the Daegu Summer Universiade for Canada's performance. Let's just say it was "dismal" at best.

Government officials in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada are re-grouping after their loss in the race to land the 2010 Commonwealth Games and are hinting at a possible attempt to bid for the 2009 World University Games.

Hamilton Mayor Larry Di Ianni met with Peter George, President of McMaster University's last month to discuss possible University games options.

Most of the motivation for the bid is to attempt to tap into funding that the government had said it would provide, if Hamilton won the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Hamilton officials are hoping that money may still be available, and that they might be able to get some, whether they get a major sport event or not.

Government officials are citing the precedent of Toronto, which lost the 2008 Olympic bid, but was given $1.5 billion (cdn) anyway for a waterfront development project.

Hamilton to look at University Games bid?

A World University Games would be perfect for Hamilton since Hamilton 2010 Commonwealth Games bid was centred on McMaster University.

Plus Hamilton is pretty thirsty to host any major sporting event and won't stop till they win something big.

That's great news! :)   Hamilton should go for it, all they have to do is modify their 2010 Commonwealth plan. It'll be perfect! Toronto is on the spotlight for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and now Hamilton is on the spotlight for a World Summer Universiade Games! :D  But when?

One question and it is a controversial one: can Hamilton handle the Summer Universiade? It has grown, like the Olympic Games. Perhaps it could handle it, I don't know.

The 22nd Universiade in Daegu featured 13 sports, 10 of which are compulsory (athletics, basketball, diving, fencing, football, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, volleyball and waterpolo) and 3 optional (archery, judo, and taekwondo).

Exactly the same size as the Commonwealth Games, featuring 15 sports.

Not the same as the CG.

In CG, swimming, diving, syncronised swimming, waterpolo are all counted as one sport - Aquatics

As theone pointed out FISU's Universiades is smaller then the Commonwealth Games. Also if the Commonwealth Games Federation said under there evaluation report "Hamilton would be capable of hosting the Commonwealth Games" then am pretty sure Hamilton can easily host this event without a problem.

Be careful with comparing the size of the University Games and the Commonwealth Games based on the number of sports alone.

Only the last two Commonwealth Games, 2002 and 1998, have had more than 10 sports. Both The University and Commonwealth games place limits, by rule, on the number of sports that can be included in the games. Most of the Universiades since 1985 have had between 11 and 13 sports, while no Commonwealth Games up until 1998 had more than ten sports.

The number of sports is perhaps the least effective indicator of the size of an event.

The University Games clearly are larger by number of nations present.  The largest Commonwealth Games, was Manchester 2002 with 72 nations.  Fifteen summer University Games have had more nations present, with nine having over 100 nations present.  Comparing the size of events by number of nations present also has weaknesses.  It is very common for a delegation to consist of just one or two athletes.

When comparing the size of an event by the number of athletes present, the University Games are clearly much larger, with ten games having more participants than the reported 3690 athletes that were at Manchester

See the FISU and Commonwealth Games Federation sites for details.

The University Games are the larger event.

Before bid of 2014WOG,Harbin China maybe apply for 2009 Winter Universiade.

It is possible that Harbin could win the bid for the 2009 Winter Universiade. Let's wait and see, if there are other bids come forward.
