Considering that Canada has only Edmonton 1983 (summer) in its resume, it is about time that the country should give its university athletes a chance to compete at home with this Games. Italy hosted this year's Winter Universiade and will do so again in just 4 years from now in Torino. San Antonio is thinking of pursuing a bid for the 2009 Summer Universiade, but it is unclear at this time. But, you're right on one point that it gets the thumbs-down for media newsworthy overall. I had to rely completely on the Internet here for news from the Daegu Summer Universiade for Canada's performance. Let's just say it was "dismal" at best. Most of the motivation for the bid is to attempt to tap into funding that the government had said it would provide, if Hamilton won the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Hamilton officials are hoping that money may still be available, and that they might be able to get some, whether they get a major sport event or not. Government officials are citing the precedent of Toronto, which lost the 2008 Olympic bid, but was given $1.5 billion (cdn) anyway for a waterfront development project. Hamilton to look at University Games bid?A World University Games would be perfect for Hamilton since Hamilton 2010 Commonwealth Games bid was centred on McMaster University. Be careful with comparing the size of the University Games and the Commonwealth Games based on the number of sports alone. Only the last two Commonwealth Games, 2002 and 1998, have had more than 10 sports. Both The University and Commonwealth games place limits, by rule, on the number of sports that can be included in the games. Most of the Universiades since 1985 have had between 11 and 13 sports, while no Commonwealth Games up until 1998 had more than ten sports. The number of sports is perhaps the least effective indicator of the size of an event. The University Games clearly are larger by number of nations present. The largest Commonwealth Games, was Manchester 2002 with 72 nations. Fifteen summer University Games have had more nations present, with nine having over 100 nations present. Comparing the size of events by number of nations present also has weaknesses. It is very common for a delegation to consist of just one or two athletes. When comparing the size of an event by the number of athletes present, the University Games are clearly much larger, with ten games having more participants than the reported 3690 athletes that were at Manchester See the FISU and Commonwealth Games Federation sites for details.
