Nice use of tilt-shift

Aparently the ceremony director is Louis J. Horvitz, and he just did the Grammy Awards.

I'm quoting someone I know who was in the audience tonight, and he's a huge Olympic fan so he's definitely comparing it to previous Olympic Ceremonies:

I think David Atkins may be some sort of miracle worker. Just wait til Friday!

This tweet sums it all up perfectly: "its gonna involve a lot of ppl and there's confetti involved ;) that is all."

Sarah MacLachlan sang tonight at #Olympic opening ceremony rehearsal. Canned music from Joni Mitchell but assume she'll be there too #vo2010

Yay Joni!! This makes me really happy.

well, only insofar as TV direction. All he has to do is pick the camera shots but someone else from the Atkkins team directs the substance and flow of the show.

OK, finally, a clip from the rehearsal showing Canada's bicultural identity perfectly :

He has said more:

it kicks Torinos ass and is more artistic than Salt Lake. Of the three [Opening Ceremonies] it's my favourite... Some very unique and crazy stuff and skirts cliche.

I concur. The whole production uses time and space perfectly with no glaring lulls.

Hey all...my Dad is doing camera for the opening ceremonies. I don't want to say for who as I'd like to keep him anonymous. They had their first rehearsal yesterday and he keeps using the words we'd all expect to hear...incredible-phenomenal-amazing-spectacular...

So far, he's said that they're flying up the director of the Grammy's! Apparently, this dude is a "hot-shot". *chuckles* They've also got about 90 cameras covering the ceremonies. To give you perspective, the Super Bowl (which broke all US TV records this year) had 44. Plus, his camera is brand new and out of the box...so that gets him pretty pumped :)

I'll let you know more as we skype every couple days and he tweets a lot.

FYI - there will be no installation of the fabric - it's staying as it is.

Where are you hearing this from?

90? They normally work with 24 to 32. I mean how many monitors do you think the director's booth can contain and how many monitors can Horowitz concentrate on? In a hall that can seat some 60,000 + all the acitivty happening on the floor, do you really think they would have 90 camerapeople + the cable person + another assitant (so making 270 crew members) running around all over the place?

90 is an obvious exaggeration. If Horovitz can't telecast a show with some 30 angles, then he doesn't know his job.

+ full sound wasn't installed

Why not? What the hell did they do with that 8 million dollars?

Yeah 90 cameras seems like a big stretch to me. Is it even necessary to have this many angles?

Even 50 is a very high number. With a few back-ups, I think they can do it with 30. Obviously, not all will be manned. THere will be a few strung up on cables that will provide overhead and sweeping shots. So maybe 20 spread out all over BC Place with camerapersons behind the lens. That's really more than enough.

Remember that these are indoor ceremonies...there might be a reason why more cameras than usual would be needed.

The 90 figure is likely the number of cameras they tested at last night's rehearsal. VANOC has said that they are releasing more opening ceremony tickets today from camera space they won't need after the camera test last night.

BTW, I'm getting conflicting numbers...some sources have the opening at 2.5 hours while others at 3 hours?
